A Local History Exhibition Opened Inside Jinhae Tower on October 31, 1998

Changwon Municipal Jinhae Museum opened on October 31, 1998. The first and second floors of Jinhae Tower in Jehwangsan Park are used as exhibition halls, along with offices, an audiovisual room, an artifact storage room, and an observation area.

The exhibition covers the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, the Samhan and Three Kingdoms periods, the Joseon period, and modern and contemporary Jinhae. Changwon Tourism states that approximately 100 artifacts are displayed in the History and Folklore Materials Room, and the museum is arranged to help visitors understand Jinhae’s historical changes through the ages along a single route.

The permanent exhibition includes a model of a Joseon-period kiln site, a Jinhae fishing model, models of King Suro and his queen of Garakguk, a turtle ship model, and a model of Ungcheon Fortress. Rather than focusing solely on Jinhae’s image as a naval port, it also explores the everyday history of a region where the sea, farming, hunting, and production activities were interconnected.

Videos about Jinhae’s historic sites are also shown, while a miniature model of the entire Jinhae area and a chronological table allow visitors to examine its geography and history together. Since the number of exhibits is not as large as at a major national museum, allocating 40–60 minutes to focus on the models and historical flow, rather than viewing each artifact for an extended time, is appropriate.

The museum is not a standalone building on level ground; it is located inside Jinhae Tower near the summit of Jehwangsan. From the Jungwon Rotary side, visitors can climb 365 steps, or, if the stairs are strenuous, take the Jehwangsan Monorail Car at 54 Jungwondong-ro.

The Jehwangsan Monorail generally operates from 09:00 to 18:00, with service extended to 09:00–22:00 during the Jinhae Gunhangje Festival. Round-trip fares are 3,000 won for adults, 2,000 won for teenagers, and 1,500 won for children. The museum is free, but the monorail requires a separate fare, so it is best to decide before setting out whether to walk or ride.

Connecting Jinhae’s Modern Heritage in the Old Downtown Area from the 290 m Zone Around Jinhae Station

Jinhae Station is a railway station described as being approximately 290 m from the museum area. After traveling from around the station into the old downtown area, heading toward Jungwon Rotary and Jehwangsan Park provides useful landmarks for first-time visitors.

The museum connects with Changwon’s Modern Cultural Heritage Road and Owl History Trail. The city’s Owl History Trail runs from Jungwon Rotary to Jinhae Post Office, Jehwangsan Monorail, Changwon Municipal Jinhae Museum, Owl Park and Owl Circular Trail, and Jungang Market. Options for Visitors Who Find the 365 Steps of Jehwangsan Difficult

Jehwangsan Park has pavilions, benches, and rest facilities, while the museum itself occupies the first and second floors of Jinhae Tower. However, since the main access route involves either stairs or the monorail, wheelchair and stroller users are advised to call ahead to check whether the monorail is operating and what areas can be accessed on site.

Local information indicates that parking is available, but the number of spaces and fees could not be confirmed through the official facility information. Especially during cherry blossom season and the Gunhangje Festival, visitors should consider prioritizing public transportation or walking access from around the lower monorail station, given the possibility of congestion around Jehwangsan Park and the old downtown roads.

A 90-Minute Visit Combining Jinhae Post Office from 1912 with a Century-Old Downtown

A visit to the museum alone takes 40–60 minutes; including the walk through Jehwangsan Park and the views, 60–90 minutes is appropriate. One course on Changwon’s Modern Cultural Heritage Road is introduced as taking approximately 90 minutes in total, combining Jinhae Post Office with Jehwangsan Park and Changwon Municipal Jinhae Museum.

Jinhae Post Office, a worthwhile nearby stop, is a one-story wooden building completed in May 1912 and described as Russian-style modern architecture. After exploring prehistoric, Joseon, modern, and contemporary history at the museum, walking through old downtown heritage sites such as the post office and the Gunhang Village History Museum helps visitors understand spatially how Jinhae changed through naval-port development and urban planning.

Immediately After the 09:00 Opening in Cherry Blossom Season, Weekday Afternoons in the Off-Season

Jehwangsan Park is within Jinhae’s cherry blossom attraction zone, so access routes to the monorail and park may be more crowded than usual during the Gunhangje Festival. Although monorail service is announced as extended until 22:00 during this period, the museum closes at 18:00 and last admission is at 17:30.

If visiting the museum is your main objective, it is efficient to see the exhibition immediately after opening at 09:00, then walk through the park and old downtown area. If your itinerary includes the view and nighttime cherry blossoms, check the monorail’s operating conditions for the day separately from the museum visit. On Mondays, the regular closing day, you can walk around Jehwangsan Park, but the museum exhibition is unavailable.
