Goesan-ri Pond Pavilion, Originating with Jo Sam’s Pen Name ‘Mujin’ in 1547

Haman Mujinjeong (無盡亭) is an early Joseon-period pavilion in Goesan-ri, Haman-myeon, Haman-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. It takes its name from Jo Sam’s (趙參) pen name, ‘Mujin.’ The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture introduces Jo Sam as a figure who served as a censorate official and an editor at the Office of Annals during the reign of King Jungjong, and records that his descendants built the pavilion in 1547 to commemorate him.

Jo Sam passed the classics licentiate examination in 1483 and the civil service examination in 1507, and served as magistrate of Hamyang, Changwon, Daegu, Seongju, and Sangju. Mujinjeong was designated a Gyeongsangnam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage on December 20, 1976, and the National Heritage Portal lists one building as the designated quantity.

The current building was reconstructed in 1929. It is a single-story structure with three bays at the front and two bays on the side, topped by a hipped-and-gabled roof. Its floor is raised above ground level in the style of a numaru, and the building is arranged to face the scenery toward the pond.

A distinctive feature is the near absence of carvings or elaborate ornamentation above the pillars. Public tourism information does not confirm a bus stop directly in front of Mujinjeong, bus numbers, or walking times. Foreign visitors and first-time travelers who need local transportation information in Haman-gun may find it practical to take a taxi from Gaya-eup or contact Haman-gun before departure to ask about bus schedules and the appropriate stop. Mujinjeong is about 3 km west of the county office area in Gaya-eup.

A Night of Haman Nakhwa Nori, Moved to Mujinjeong in 1960

Haman Nakhwa Nori is Haman’s traditional fireworks event in which nakhwabong sticks made from oak charcoal powder are hung between lanterns and lit, allowing sparks to fall onto the water. According to Korea Tourism Organization materials, the event was originally held throughout Haman Fortress and moved to the area around Mujinjeong in 1960 following its revival by the Cheogang Village Youth Association.

A Half-Day Route That Also Takes in the Malisan Tumuli and Haman Museum

Mujinjeong is about 3 km from the center of Gaya-eup, making it convenient to combine with the Malisan Tumuli in Haman, a relic of Ara Gaya, and Haman Museum on the same day. The Malisan Tumuli were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 as one element of the Gaya Tumuli, and are located around 153-31 Gohbun-gil.

The pavilion itself is not large, and 30–60 minutes is enough to see its main features.
