Where Did the Name ‘The Island Where the Rabbit Flew Up’ Come From?

Bito Island is located in Seopo-myeon, Sacheon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, and is known as the setting for the legend of <Byeoljubujeon> (The Tale of the Rabbit and the Tortoise), which features a rabbit, a turtle, and the Dragon King. Bito means ‘the island where the rabbit flew up,’ and surrounding the island are Woldeungdo, Tokkiseom (Rabbit Island), Geobukseom (Turtle Island), and Mokseom.

Bito Island was connected to the mainland with the construction of the Bito Bridge in 1992. Therefore, it is a car travel destination where you enter via Provincial Road 1005 across the Bito and Geobuk Bridges rather than taking a boat. However, the fact that you can reach the main island by car does not mean you can walk to Woldeungdo at any time.

The Low Tide Path from Woldeungdo to Tokkiseom and Geobukseom

Woldeungdo is introduced in <Byeoljubujeon> as the place where the rabbit is said to have jumped up while looking at the moon. Tokkiseom and Geobukseom are known as islands connected to Woldeungdo, but Woldeungdo can only be accessed during low tide. During high tide, the tidal flat paths and submersible roads can be submerged, so you should not attempt to walk in just by looking at the island names.

The recommended time for tidal flat experiences is two hours before and after low tide, and the guided recommended time slot is from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. On the coast where sand and rocks are mixed, clams, conches, and sea snails are introduced as items that can be collected, but whether collection is permitted and how the experience is operated must follow the on-site regulations of separate facilities. From Sacheon Intercity Bus Terminal and Sacheon Airport to Habong

By car, the route is guided by exiting at the Gonyang IC on the Namhae Expressway into the Gonyang IC Intersection, turning left and driving straight for about 6km, then entering Provincial Road 1005 toward Bito in Seopo-myeon. Other guides introduce a route taking about 25 minutes from Sacheon IC to Bito-ri, Seopo-myeon, using the bridge. Within the island, a section of driving straight for about 2.1km on Provincial Road 1005 after passing Bito Bridge and Geobuk Bridge is suggested.

For public transportation, take bus No. 75 from the Sacheon Intercity Bus Terminal stop, transfer to No. 90 at the Gonyang Public Terminal, and get off at the Habong stop. There are guided routes taking about 1 hour and 50 minutes from Sacheon Intercity Bus Terminal to Habong stop, and about 1 hour and 40 minutes using No. 75 and No. 90 from Sacheon Airport. From the Habong stop to the entrance of Woldeungdo is a walk of about 100m. Since bus transfers are required and dispatch interval information is not provided, returning from the island may be inconvenient if you do not check the daily schedule.

Walking Bito Island for Free vs. Paid Entry to the Fishing Park

There are materials indicating that Bito Island itself is open at all times, and no entrance fee for the entire island has been identified. On the other hand, the Bito Marine Fishing Park is a separate paid facility. Simple admission is 2,000 KRW for individual adults / 1,000 KRW for groups, and 1,000 KRW for individual teenagers / 500 KRW for groups. Daily fishing use is guided at 20,000 KRW for adults and 10,000 KRW for teenagers.

Bito Marine Fishing Park is a paid fishing park opened by Sacheon City in 2016 and is operated under consignment by the Bito Village Fishery Union. It features piers, fishing platforms, and floating platforms, and parking is available. A Night in 28 Campsites and 15 Glamping Tents

Bito National Leisure Campsite consists of 28 general camping sites, 15 glamping tents, and 3 Story Houses. Travelers wishing to stay overnight while looking at the sea can extend Bito Island from just a day-trip coastal drive into an overnight itinerary. The island also features the Byeoljubujeon Theme Park, which includes an observatory, rabbit family statues, dioramas, and walking trails.

Bito Island Shinwoo Resort Modern Glamping is introduced as a facility that operates camping, caravans, and glamping together. Usage hours are from 15:00 to 11:00 the next day, it is open year-round, and rates are guided starting from 50,000 KRW for camping, 200,000 KRW for caravans, and 230,000 KRW for glamping. There is an outdoor swimming pool, fishing site, foot volleyball court, golf practice range, arcade, and snack bar. Sea fishing and tidal flat experiences require separate fees. A Coastal Road Itinerary for Sunsets and Oysters

Bito Island is introduced as a coastal road driving course where you can look out at the sea breeze, blue waves, and the endless tidal flats. You can appreciate the harmony of the sea and the sunset, and oysters are introduced as a specialty of Bito Island. If you do not plan to access Woldeungdo, it is logistically simpler to view the coastal scenery by car and group it with the Byeoljubujeon Theme Park or the campsite.

The Sacheon Bito Island Byeoljubujeon Festival was planned as an event for late March to early April in 2025 data, and the location was guided as the Bito Marine Fishing Park parking lot (447 Geobuk-gil, Seopo-myeon). The festival is introduced as featuring experiences, sales of local specialties, busking performances, and a marketplace. Four Things Often Missed by First-Time Visitors

First, although the main island is entered by car, Woldeungdo, Tokkiseom, and Geobukseom are affected by the tides. Second, the entrance fee for the island itself and the entrance fee for the Bito Marine Fishing Park are different. Third, while Bito Marine Fishing Park is guided as having parking available, the location, fees, and number of spaces in public parking lots for Bito Island as a whole have not been identified.

Fourth, it is guided that Bito Marine Fishing Park does not have stroller rentals and pets are not allowed. While the main island is accessible by car via the bridge, the tidal flats and submersible road sections may be difficult to navigate with wheelchairs or strollers.
