Namwon Chunhyang Theme Park, where five scenes from The Tale of Chunhyang unfold across a 35,000-pyeong hillside

Chunhyang Theme Park is an outdoor park in the Namwon tourist area designed for visitors to follow the story of Chunhyang and Yi Mong-ryong through five sections: Meeting, Vow, Love and Separation, Trials, and Festival. Admission has been free since January 1, 2025, and the park stays open until 9:00 p.m. or 10:00 p.m., depending on the season, making it easy to combine with the Namwon Aerospace Observatory and Namwon Local History Museum along one route.

The order of the five acts of ‘Chunhyangjeon’, completed in May 2004

Chunhyang Theme Park is an outdoor theme park within the Namwon Tourism Site that recreates the love story of Chunhyang and Yi Mong-ryong as a physical space. Construction was completed on February 18, 2004, and the facilities were completed on May 1 of the same year. The facility area is listed as approximately 35,000 pyeong. Rather than simply presenting sculptures, the park explains why Namwon is remembered as the setting of Chunhyangjeon through its walking route.

Visitors begin at the Meeting Act and continue through the Pledge Act, Love and Farewell Act, Trials Act, and Festival Act. The Meeting Act features pillars displaying Chunhyangjeon characters through text and illustrations, along with a floor fountain and Chunhyang Plaza. The park as a whole contains six Chunhyang plazas, five jangseung totem poles, three stone pagodas, three Love Walls, 61 folk props, and 12 prison props.

Admission became free on January 1, 2025, with seasonal closing times

Admission has been free since January 1, 2025. Previously, admission was 3,000 won for adults, 2,500 won for teenagers and military personnel, and 2,000 won for children, so it is best not to rely on the paid fee schedules shown in older search results. Namwon City’s official information states that free admission is in effect.

Operating hours are 09:00–22:00 from April through October and 09:00–21:00 from November through March. The park itself operates year-round, but the Namwon Local History Museum inside the park is closed every Monday. For inquiries, check with the Namwon City main telephone number, 063-620-6114, or the on-site information desk. The official information page is https://www.namwon.go.kr/tour/index.do?menuUid=ff8080818e5f3f48018e600d6f2c00c3.

A hillside route beginning with an escalator at 43 Yangnim-gil

The address for visitors is 43 Yangnim-gil, Namwon-si, Jeonbuk State Special Self-Governing Province. Facility information related to the park also lists 14-9 Yangnim-gil or 12 Yangnim-gil. This is because the addresses of the theme park, Chunhyang Culture and Arts Center, and affiliated facilities are divided within the Namwon Tourism Site. To reduce confusion, enter “Chunhyang Theme Park” as the destination in your navigation system and also follow the signs on site.

The park is located on hilly terrain, and visitors can use the escalator at the entrance to reach the upper section. The route then rises and descends past traditional thatched-roof house sets, character sculptures, a recreated magistrate’s office, fountains, and pavilions, so it may feel somewhat long to visitors expecting only a flat stroll. Allowing one to two hours makes it possible to see both the Local History Museum and the sculpture areas.

Eight city bus routes and an 8-minute walk from Samdari Sanga bus stop

By public transportation, visitors can take a Namwon city bus, get off at Samdari Sanga bus stop, and walk for approximately eight minutes. The available routes are listed as 1-3-120, 1-112-1, 1-133, 1-134, 1-141, 1-142, 1-150, and 1-150-1. Since schedules and operating directions may change, reconfirm the information through Namwon City’s bus information service on the day of departure.

For visitors traveling from Namwon Station toward the city center and transferring to a bus, some accommodation providers recommend taking routes 133, 161, or 142 and getting off at Nammun Sanga or Samjin Pharmacy bus stop. However, these stops are not directly in front of Chunhyang Theme Park, so if the theme park is your destination, it is more practical to first confirm routes that stop at Samdari Sanga.

A one- to two-hour itinerary that avoids the Local History Museum’s Monday closure

The Namwon Local History Museum inside the theme park exhibits artifacts related to Namwon and is closed on Mondays. The park operates normally on Mondays, so visitors planning to see only the five outdoor acts can still visit, but those who want to see the indoor exhibits should plan their visit from Tuesday through Sunday. Some past visitor reviews also mention that photography inside the Local History Museum was restricted, so it is safest to follow the photography rules on site.

A summer 2022 review mentioned the Namwon Citizens’ Ceramics College inside the park, murals and a swing along the path to the Pledge Act, and a pansori performance in the Festival Act. However, performances and hands-on activities cannot be assumed to be permanent, so visitors traveling with a specific activity in mind should separately check whether it is being held that day. The park is suitable for a walk without advance reservations, but it may not meet the expectations of visitors assuming that every building will be open or that programs will be operating.

0.35 km to Namwon Aerospace and Astronomy Observatory: A full-day route through the tourism district’s hills

Near the park are the Namwon Local History Museum, approximately 0.11 km away; Namwon AirRail, approximately 0.18 km away; the Sim Su-gwan Ceramics Exhibition Hall, approximately 0.23 km away; and the Chunhyang Culture and Arts Center, approximately 0.24 km away. The Namwon Aerospace and Astronomy Observatory is listed as approximately 0.35 km away, and the National Center for Korean Folk Performing Arts is approximately 0.38 km away, allowing visitors to visit several cultural facilities consecutively on the same tourism district hillside.

Chunhyang Theme Park is also known as a filming location for the film ‘Chunhyangdyun’ and the drama ‘Sassy Girl Chun-hyang’. Therefore, even foreign travelers who have not read the classic novel can follow the story easily by moving in the order “Meeting → Pledge → Farewell → Trials → Festival.” Since the outdoor facilities are centered on Korean-language explanations on their signs, specific information about foreign-language interpretation and wheelchair accessibility was not found in the official information, so separate inquiries are necessary before visiting.
