A 420 m suspension bridge crossing from Yosan Park
Okjeong Lake Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting Yosan Park and Bungeoseom Island. The bridge is 420 m long and 1.5 m wide, and according to official tourism information, it is located around 413-1, Ipseok-ri, Unam-myeon, Imsil-gun.
The main tower is an 80 m-high structure shaped like a crucian carp, while the railings are stainless-steel mesh and the deck consists of steel grating. Since this is not a pedestrian bridge with a completely enclosed floor, expect sections where you can see the lake below and areas where you can feel the wind directly.
The bridge opened on October 22, 2022, and changes on Bungeoseom Island
Okjeong Lake Suspension Bridge is reported to have opened on October 22, 2022. With the bridge, a pedestrian route was created from Yosan Park across the lake to Bungeoseom Ecological Park.
Bungeoseom Island’s original name is Oaennal. It was given the name Bungeoseom because the island’s shape, viewed from the Guksabong Observatory, resembles a crucian carp. Its area at the flood-control level is 73,039㎡.
Why a 1928 agricultural-water lake became a tourist attraction
Okjeong Lake is an artificial lake created in 1928 by damming the area between Okjeong-ri, Gangjin-myeon, Imsil-gun, and Jongseong-ri, Sannae-myeon, Jeongeup-si, to use the Seomjingang River for agricultural water. Its name comes from the place name Okjeong-ri in Gangjin-myeon, located upstream of Seomjingang Dam.
The water area expanded when Seomjingang Dam was completed in 1965. The dam is described as Korea’s first multipurpose dam and is 344 m long and 64 m high. Okjeong Lake came to form its present expansive surface, with a drainage-basin area of 763㎢, a reservoir surface area of 26.3㎢, and a storage capacity of 460 million tons.
The garden on Bungeoseom Island, uninhabited since 2017
People lived on Bungeoseom Island until 2017, but it is now described as uninhabited. From 2018, Imsil-gun purchased the island and developed its landscape, transforming it into an ecological park where visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers.
The park is described as having a visitor information center, lawn area, forest library, wind-bathing area, Skyward Rest Area, and flower fields. Peonies, hydrangeas, and cosmos provide seasonal attractions; in particular, the Unjong-ri peony field is said to be in full bloom from mid-May to early June.
09:00–18:00 from March to October; closed on Mondays
According to information available in April 2025, operating hours during the summer season from March through October are 09:00–18:00, while winter hours from November through February are 10:00–17:00. The official final admission time for the suspension bridge could not be confirmed separately.
The regular closing day is listed as every Monday, but the same information also says that the site is open every day in April–May and October–November. Access to the suspension bridge and Bungeoseom Island may be restricted during weather advisories or facility maintenance, so it is particularly advisable to contact the operating team in advance on Mondays and during bad weather.
An admission fee discrepancy: 4,000 won versus 3,000 won for adults
Public information from April 2025 lists admission as 4,000 won for adults and 2,000 won for children, stating that the fee is paid only once rather than separately for the suspension bridge and Bungeoseom Island. However, an October 2024 source lists 3,000 won for adults, 2,000 won for seniors and people with disabilities, and 1,000 won for elementary, middle, and high school students, so the fee information conflicts.
Therefore, it is difficult to state one definitive amount in this article. Before departing, you can contact the Okjeong Lake Management Office at 063-640-4113, the Bungeoseom Operations Team at 063-640-4594~5, or the Bungeoseom Ecological Park ticket office at 063-644-5000.
Set Imsil IC and the two parking areas as destinations first
Imsil-gun cultural tourism information estimates travel by car from Seoul to Imsil at about 3 hours 4 minutes, from Busan at about 3 hours 16 minutes, from Daegu at about 2 hours 48 minutes, from Mokpo at about 2 hours 18 minutes, and from Gwangju at about 1 hour 13 minutes. From Seoul, the suggested route to Imsil IC uses the Gyeongbu Expressway, Cheonan–Nonsan Expressway, Honam Expressway, Iksan–Pohang Expressway, and Jeonju–Gwangyang Expressway.
The listed parking locations are the Bungeoseom parking lot at 304, Ipseok-ri, Unam-myeon, Imsil-gun, and the Ssangam-ri parking lot at 547, Ssangam-ri, Unam-myeon, Imsil-gun. For travelers visiting Korea for the first time, rather than planning an itinerary based on an on-site transfer at Imsil Station or Imsil Bus Terminal, download the bus timetable and compare the destination and operating date first, or contact Imsil-gun tourism information. For travelers departing from long-distance locations such as Seoul, Busan, or Daegu, it is more realistic to plan around traveling by rental car or other vehicle to Imsil IC, for which official travel times are provided.
About a two-hour walk and conditions for bringing pets
According to visitor reviews, it takes about two hours to explore Bungeoseom Island at a leisurely pace. If you are considering only a round trip across the bridge, the time may seem short, but you should enter with plenty of time within the operating hours if you also want to see the island’s flower fields, lawn area, and rest areas.
Dogs may walk in Bungeoseom Ecological Park when kept on a leash, but pets must be carried in a carrier or stroller when crossing the suspension bridge. Information states that medium-to-large dogs weighing over 10 kg and aggressive dogs are not permitted. Complete information on wheelchair and stroller routes and slopes, English information or audio guides, photography restrictions, and whether payment is cash-only could not be confirmed.
An order for understanding the submerged villages from Yangyojeong and the Manghyangt ap
The area around Yosan Park has a historical connection to Yangyojeong and the Manghyangt ap. Yangyojeong is a pavilion built by Choe Eung-suk, also known as Yangyodang, a loyal official who returned to his hometown during the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592. Fourteen signboards engraved by visitors who enjoyed the arts and scenery remain there.
After Yangyojeong’s original site was submerged during the construction of Seomjingang Dam in 1965, descendants moved it to its current location in Guam Village, Ipseok-ri. It is Cultural Heritage Material No. 137 of Jeonbuk State. The 18 granite stones of the Manghyangt ap symbolize the 18 villages in the submerged area, while the sotdae sculptures represent the wishes of 19,851 residents displaced by the flooding of the Unam area.
Combine Guksabong and Route 749 to see the lake mist
Guksabong is described as a viewpoint where visitors can see the sunrise and Bungeoseom Island covered in lake mist. The view of entering the island from the bridge and the view looking down on its crucian-carp shape from Guksabong face different directions, so combining both on the same day provides distinct sightseeing experiences.
The Okjeong Lake Loop Road is the section of Local Road 749 between Maam-ri and Ipseok-ri. It was selected as one of Korea’s 100 Most Beautiful Roads and is known as a driving route featuring cherry blossoms and lake mist. Adding travel time to Guksabong and the loop road to the approximately two-hour walk around Bungeoseom requires at least half a day. Since the bus route number and service interval have not been confirmed, an itinerary connecting several sites using only public transportation is not suitable.
