The Terrain of Cheonjiyeon, the ‘Pond Where Heaven and Earth Meet’
Cheonjiyeon (天地淵) means ‘a pond formed where heaven and earth meet.’ Seogwipo is an area with relatively many waterfalls because spring water gushes up in many places and water-resistant tuff layers are widely distributed. Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is a representative watercourse created by these geological conditions.
The waterfall is 22 m high and about 12 m wide, while the pool below is described as 20 m deep. The waterfall terrain formed and retreated over time as the solid volcanic rock layer and the relatively weak sedimentary layer beneath it underwent different degrees of long-term erosion. Rather than simply viewing the observatory in front of the waterfall and leaving, it is more meaningful to also follow the forest trail through the valley.
A Valley Overlapping Natural Monument Nos. 163, 379, and 27
The natural habitat of the Dambalsu tree in Cheonjiyeon Valley is designated Natural Monument No. 163, while the surrounding subtropical forest is designated Natural Monument No. 379. The evergreen forest, where Castanopsis sieboldii, camellias, and orchids grow, surrounds the valley southwest of the waterfall. The Dambalsu tree has great conservation value because this area is its northern limit.
The deep pool below the waterfall is also known as a habitat of the giant mottled eel, linking it to Natural Monument No. 27. Giant mottled eels are migratory fish that spawn in the sea and then return to rivers and lakes. Since they tend to hide in deep water during the day, visitors should observe them from the trail behind the railing rather than approaching the water or trying to search for wildlife.
Day and Night Routes Based on 09:00–22:00 Hours and the 21:20 Last Admission
According to official tourism information, Cheonjiyeon Waterfall operates daily from 09:00 to 22:00, with last admission at 21:20. Some older notices state that operating hours vary by season, so if you plan to visit at night, it is safest to call the main number, 064-733-1528, again on the day of departure to confirm whether the lighting and viewing paths are operating.
Admission is 2,000 won for adults and 1,000 won for teenagers, military and police personnel, and children; Jeju residents are admitted free. Cultural tourism interpretation sessions require on-site registration, begin on the hour from 10:00 to 17:00, and last approximately 30–60 minutes per session. Interpretation services are listed as operating year-round except on Lunar New Year’s Day and Chuseok Day, but session times and staffing may change.
A Gentle Walking Trail Starting at the Ticket Office at 2-15 Namseongjung-ro
The ticket office address is 2-15 Namseongjung-ro, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province; by lot-number address, it is listed as the area around 667-7 Cheonji-dong. Since it is in central Seogwipo, it is convenient to arrive by taxi or city bus and plan a round-trip walk from the ticket office to the waterfall. The recommended time, including sightseeing and photography, is approximately 40–60 minutes.
Parking is available. However, during night-opening hours or on weekends, it is advisable to allow plenty of time because spaces near the entrance may fill first. According to the visitor information, dogs and cats with a shoulder height of 40 cm or less may enter if they are kept on a leash no longer than 2 m and their registration is confirmed. Visitors whose pets do not meet these conditions should avoid bringing them along.
Wheelchair and Stroller Users Should Decide in Advance How to Return
Accessibility information lists designated disabled parking spaces, access to the ticket office, accessible restrooms, wheelchair and stroller rentals, a nursing room, diaper-changing tables, and a rapid charger for powered mobility devices. The ramp to the accessible restroom near the parking lot has a measured incline of approximately 4.5 degrees, while the ramp to the accessible restroom near the ticket office has an incline of approximately 5.9 degrees.
The important point is that stairs and stepping stones appear after crossing the bridge on the exit side. Wheelchair and stroller users must return by the way they came in, so it is better not to cross the bridge as though the route were one-way. Sign-language interpretation, guide-dog access, and tactile paving are also listed, but since this information is based on a 2022 survey, visitors should confirm the services they need by phone before visiting.
Seogwipo’s Coastal Terrain Extending to Chilshipnigyo and Saeyeongyo
Cheonjiyeon Waterfall adjoins Jeju Olle Trail Route 6. To understand the waterfall’s original location and the terrain downstream, it is also worth viewing the valley scenery in the direction of Chilshipnigyo. The waterfalls and coastal cliffs around Seogwipo retain traces of fault movement and volcanic and sedimentary layers from approximately 400,000 years ago, helping explain why the waterfall is located in an urban area close to the sea.
If you are planning an itinerary in central Seogwipo, you can connect a visit to Cheonjiyeon Waterfall with the area around the Cheonjiyeon Outdoor Performance Venue and continue toward Saeyeongyo and Saeseom Island. If you only want to see the waterfall quickly, allow 40 minutes; if you include the interpretation session, the forest trail, and a walk along the surrounding coast, allowing 90 minutes or more is realistic.
Three Things Travelers Often Miss: Closing Time, Protected Areas, and Shoes for Night Visits
First, more important than the 22:00 closing time is the 21:20 last admission. If you plan to visit after dinner in Seogwipo, aim to arrive at the ticket office before 21:00. The operation of the viewing paths may change in weather conditions such as heavy rain or strong winds.
Second, this is not merely a place for waterfall photos; it is a natural heritage area protecting the Dambalsu tree, subtropical forest, and giant mottled eel. Third, the basalt walking paths and areas near the water may be slippery at night or after rain, so sneakers with nonslip soles are more suitable than sandals. In protected areas, activities that damage nature, such as collecting plants, logging, and capturing wild animals, are prohibited.
