Reasons to Walk Through Wonmi-dong, the Center Since Bucheon's 1973 Elevation to City Status
Bucheon-si was elevated from Sosa-eup to Bucheon-si in 1973. The city introduces Wonmi Masil-gil as a course to explore the history and culture of the area that developed into the city's center thereafter. Therefore, this path is not just a hiking schedule for mountain trails, but connects the traces of urban expansion by passing through station area commercial districts, streams, residential alleys, markets, and Wonmisan Mountain in sequence.
The alleys and markets of Wonmi-dong are the setting for Yang Gui-ja's novel "The People of Wonmi-dong." Official guides explain that many houses and villa buildings from after the 1970s remain in this area. If you are looking for the actual setting of the literary work, it is recommended not to skip Wonmi-dong People's Street and Wonmi General Market after passing the Wonmisan Mountain section.
- Elevation to City Status: 1973
- Literary Background: Yang Gui-ja's "The People of Wonmi-dong"
- Urban Observation Points: Wonmi-dong Alleys and Markets
- Connected Markets: Wonmi General Market, Wonmi Buheung Market, Wonmi Geumgang Shopping Street

From Simgokcheon Stream to Seokwangsa Temple, the End of the Flat Walk
Passing Bucheon University Street leads to the walking paths and commercial districts around Simgokcheon Stream. Bucheon City guides state that cafes and restaurants are concentrated around Imagination Street, University Street, and Simgokcheon Stream. If you need to prepare a meal or water immediately after starting, it is better to do so in this urban section, and it is practical to check for restrooms and beverage purchase points before heading up to Wonmisan Mountain.
After Simgokcheon Stream, you enter Wonmisan Mountain via the direction of Somyeong Girls' Middle School and Seokwangsa Temple. The entire 8.4km course is not flat, and the 140-minute standard should be viewed as a walking pace that does not include ample time for breaks or market sightseeing. Even if not hiking boots, preparing sneakers with non-slip soles and water will make it easier to handle the forest trail sections.
- Urban Sections: Imagination Street, University Street, Simgokcheon Stream
- Key Points Before Mountain Entrance: Somyeong Girls' Middle School, Seokwangsa Temple
- Recommended Preparation: Water, non-slip sneakers
- Food and Beverage Options: Commercial districts around Simgokcheon Stream

167m Summit of Wonmisan Mountain and the Seasons of the Metasequoia Forest Trail
Wonmisan Mountain is known to be 167m above sea level, and the highest point of Wonmi Masil-gil is the summit of Wonmisan Mountain. Bucheon City guides that you can overlook downtown Bucheon and the surrounding areas from the summit. Since returning immediately after reaching the summit means missing the latter half of the course, namely the Wonmi-dong alleys and markets, it is better to decide whether to complete the full course or just a section by calculating your physical strength and sunset time.
According to official introductions, the Wonmisan forest trail features Metasequoia, Italian Poplar, and Pagoda Dogwood, while oak and pine forest trails continue near the summit. It is also a mountain where the Wonmisan Azalea Festival is held in the spring. However, during the festival period, there may be more visitors than usual, so if you prioritize a quiet forest trail, starting in the morning on a day that does not overlap with the festival is more suitable.
- Wonmisan Height: 167m above sea level
- Summit Function: Panoramic view of Bucheon city and surroundings
- Forest Composition: Metasequoia, Italian Poplar, Pagoda Dogwood
- Near the Summit: Oak forest and pine forest trails

Descending Toward Wonmi-dong People's Street via Literature Park and Bucheon City Library
The descent route after the summit of Wonmisan Mountain leads through Literature Park, Wonmi Park, and Bucheon City Library to Wonmi-dong People's Street. A walking record published in January 2024 lists Wonmisan Literature Park, Wonmi Mineral Spring, the summit stone, the observation deck overpass, Wonmi Park Memorial Tower, Bucheon City Library, Ginkgo Tree Road, and Metasequoia Road as consecutive points. However, construction or restricted access may change, so priority should be given to on-site information boards on the day of departure.
This descent part is a section where the forest transitions into a residential area. To see the traces of houses and villas from after the 1970s emphasized by the official guide, it is better to observe the living flow from Wonmi-dong People's Street to the scale of the buildings in the alleys and the market rather than passing through quickly. For wheelchair and stroller users, it is safer to use the flat sections like Bucheon Station and Simgokcheon Stream separately rather than completing the entire course due to the possibility of mountain trails, stairs, and slopes.
- Descent Connections: Literature Park, Wonmi Park, Bucheon City Library
- Late Course Highlight: Wonmi-dong People's Street
- Caution: Potential for slopes and stairs in forest trails
- Accessibility Recommendation: Wheelchair and stroller users should use flat sections separately
Finishing at Wonmi General Market and Sosin Bus Terminal
After Wonmi-dong People's Street, there is a market alleyway leading to Wonmi General Market, Wonmi Buheung Market, and Wonmi Geumgang Shopping Street. Bucheon City introduces this section as a convenient path for shopping. Since market operating hours vary by shop, if you plan to visit a specific restaurant or go shopping, you should check the operation of individual shops before departure. Starting late in the afternoon may result in short market usage time after completing the 8.4km walk.
The official terminus of the course is Sosin Bus Terminal. If you need to return to the starting point, you must separately check the return route from the terminus to Bucheon Station North Square on a map app. For those with cars, due to the nature of linear trekking, a plan to park near the starting point and return is necessary. Dedicated parking lots and fees for Wonmi Masil-gil were not confirmed on the official tourism page.
