Best Time to Visit
Chungjang-ro is in the center of downtown Gwangju, so it is easy to access and a good area to enjoy shopping and dining together. The best times to visit are spring (April to May) and fall (September to October), when it is neither too hot nor too cold and walking is comfortable.
During the day, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM is the most balanced time. It is not too early since it is after lunch, and before the evening rush, so you can look around at a relaxed pace. Evening hours tend to get busier.
For the day of the week, Tuesday through Thursday is recommended. Weekends and public holidays can be crowded because of the larger flow of people. If you want a quieter atmosphere, visit on a weekday daytime; if you want a lively downtown vibe, Friday evening or the weekend is best.
How Long to Stay
If you only tour the main street, 30 minutes to 1 hour is enough. If you also want to enjoy cafes, food spots, and the alley atmosphere, about 1 to 2 hours is ideal. If you plan to include nearby alley attractions or the surrounding Dong-gu area, it is better to set aside 2 to 3 hours.
How to Get There
Chungjang-ro is in the center of Gwangju’s old downtown, so it is easy to reach by public transportation.
Subway
The most convenient way is to use Gwangju Metro Line 1. If you get off at Geumnamno 4-ga Station or Culture Complex Station, you can walk to Chungjang-ro. Usually, exiting from Exit 1 or 2 makes access convenient. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes from the station to the main street.
Bus
Getting there by bus is also convenient. There are various routes heading toward Chungjang-ro, such as Bus 228, Bus 518, and Cheomdan 09. On some sections, an express bus may be faster than a regular bus. If you are departing from the terminal, it is safer and more convenient to cross the road using the underground passage after getting off.
Walking
Chungjang-ro is located in the main commercial district running parallel to the west of Geumnam-ro. If you are in the area around Geumnam-ro, Seoseok-ro, or Doklib-ro, it is easy to get there on foot. If you follow the signs along the main road, you can naturally enter the main shopping street.
Photo Spots
- In front of Gwangju Theater — A great spot for capturing Chungjang-ro’s old cultural atmosphere. If you stand in front of the theater and take a photo facing toward the building entrance, the sign and vintage exterior will both be included. Late morning to early afternoon is the most comfortable time, with fewer people, making it good for photos.
- Street-tree lighting section along Chungjang-ro 1-ga — A street photo hotspot where the lights installed on each tree are the main feature. As you walk along the road, shooting in the direction where the trees stretch on and on lets you capture both the lights and the street mood. Late afternoon to evening is best, especially after the lights come on.
- Illuminated street strolling section — A spot that is great for taking natural walking shots. If you shoot toward the inside of the street from the edge of the sidewalk, you can capture the lights, the flow of people, and the atmosphere of Chungjang-ro together. Shooting in the evening makes the lighting stand out in the background.
Night View
The nightscape of Chungjang-ro is appealing for its emotional street scenery created by neon signs and media art lighting. In particular, the area around Geumnam Butterfly Garden is great for photos thanks to installations using various lights and nighttime illumination, and the alleys of Chungjang-ro offer a distinctive night view with their flashy signs and old store atmosphere.
Hongkong Alley is popular as an evening strolling course because its dim alley atmosphere and neon lights match well. The area around Gwangju Art Street also becomes even more atmospheric at night as the lights from galleries, workshops, and accessory shops add to the scene.
The recommended time is from after sunset until around 10:00 PM. During this period, the lights are most visible, and it is a good time to enjoy both walking and photography. On weekends or during events, street events or nighttime programs may be held, creating a livelier atmosphere.
Seasonal Guide
Chungjang-ro is a good place to enjoy downtown shopping and dining, but it is even better to combine it with nearby natural attractions depending on the season.
Spring
In spring, cherry blossoms are the biggest attraction. Along the cherry blossom path of Mudeungsan and the walking trails around the lake, the full-bloom blossoms continue like a pink tunnel, making it a great place for photos. It is easy to visit as a half-day course starting from Chungjang-ro.
Summer
In summer, Mudeungsan, with its lush greenery, is popular. You can enjoy the scenery more comfortably by taking a light walk in the cool air or using the lift, monorail, and observatory at Jisan Amusement Park. During the hot daytime, combining indoor cafes and shopping malls in Chungjang-ro makes for a practical itinerary.
Fall
In fall, the autumn foliage is at its peak. Mudeungsan and the Gwangju Lake area are representative foliage spots, with beautiful red and yellow mountain scenery. Thanks to the cool weather, it is great to combine a stroll along Chungjang-ro with nearby nature courses.
Winter
In winter, the snowy scenery of Mudeungsan is impressive. After snow falls, the entire mountain turns white, creating a special view. In the city, it is nice to enjoy the street lights and winter atmosphere in the evening and then rest in a warm indoor restaurant or cafe.
Travel tip: During the spring cherry blossom season and the fall foliage season, there are many visitors, so traveling early in the morning is more comfortable. Since there is a lot of walking, prepare comfortable shoes.
Local Tips
- Weekday lunch hours can be crowded, so it is more comfortable to visit local favorite restaurants outside the lunch peak.
- Small, tucked-away restaurants inside the market may also be hidden gems, so do not only look at places on the main road; check deeper inside as well.
- When choosing a restaurant, it helps to check local blogs or mom cafe community posts together with simple reviews.
- Because Chungjang-ro is in a convenient location, it is easy to eat between shopping stops, so planning your route together is efficient.
- If people in your group have different tastes, choosing a restaurant with a varied menu is convenient, since there are many options such as Korean set meals, rice bowls, pasta, ramen, and pho.
