Best Time to Visit

Gangwon-do Wonju Chiaksan 계절 봄 가을

Wonju Chiaksan is best visited from April to October. The weather is relatively stable, and the trails are easier to use than in winter. In contrast, November to March requires more caution due to cold weather, ice, and slippery conditions during thawing periods.

Within the day, an early morning start is best. In the summer season (Apr-Oct), mountain entry is usually possible from 04:00, and in the winter season (Nov-Mar), from 05:00. For safety, it is recommended to finish entering the mountain before 2:00 PM.

The quietest time is weekday mornings. Weekends and public holidays can be relatively crowded, so if you want a leisurely walk, visiting on Tuesday to Thursday mornings is the most practical choice.

In summary, the best season is April to October, the best time of day is early morning, and the best days are weekdays.

How Long to Stay

For a short visit to Chiaksan, a round trip from Guryongsa Temple to Seryeom Falls takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Usually, it is good to allow 4 to 4 hours and 40 minutes for a round trip to Birobong Peak. If you want to include photo stops, rest breaks, nearby restaurants around the parking area, or nearby attractions such as Guryongsa Temple, planning for half a day to a full day is practical.

How to Get There

For foreign travelers, the most practical method is usually to travel from Seoul to the Wonju area by KTX, then take a city bus toward Chiaksan.

By Subway

There is no subway that goes directly to Chiaksan. First, take the Seoul subway to Seoul Station or Cheongnyangni Station, then transfer to KTX. According to the original information, trains to Chiaksan use a route departing from Seoul Station and stopping via Cheongnyangni.

By Bus

After arriving at Hoengseong Station on KTX or in downtown Wonju, you can take city bus No. 82 toward Chiaksan. The original information mentions a bus heading toward Hwanggol 3-way Intersection, and notes that service is less frequent on Saturdays and public holidays, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.

There is also information about the tourist-oriented Wonju themed city tour bus and Chiaksan circular bus, but operating hours are limited to 09:00 to 16:00. For foreign travelers, regular city buses may be more practical.

On Foot

After getting off the bus, walk to the trail entrance. Chiaksan is not within walking distance directly from a train station or subway station, so you must first use a train or bus.

Tip: The original data did not include subway exit numbers. In Korea, bus timetables can change often, so check the latest information at a station tourist information center or on a map app.

Photo Spots

  • Viewpoint along the foot of Chiaksan: A roadside or outdoor space in front of a cafe in the Soso-myeon area of Wonju, where Chiaksan can be seen in the background, is a safe choice. If you shoot with the mountain ridge in front of you toward the northeast, the mountain scenery will stand out well. Early morning or late afternoon light is soft and good for landscape photography.
  • Cafe outdoor garden with many photo spots: At photo-garden-style cafes below Chiaksan, the garden, seating, and props are the main shooting points. For portraits, stand with your back to Chiaksan or at a diagonal angle so both the background and the person come out well. Around 10:00 AM or around sunset is the most stable time.
  • Indoor window seats at a cafe: Seats with a large window overlooking the Chiaksan foothills or the outside garden are ideal. If you place the camera at a 45-degree angle toward the window, it is easier to include both the drink and the background. Morning natural light is clean, and photos also come out softly on cloudy days.
  • First Chiaksan viewpoint after leaving Wonju Station: If there is a section where Chiaksan opens up along the road about 15 minutes by car from Wonju Station, it is a good place to stop briefly for photos. Frame the shot head-on so the entire mountain is visible, and add a road or trees in the foreground to bring out the travel atmosphere. A clear afternoon is the sharpest.

Night View

After visiting Wonju Chiaksan, it is nice to enjoy the night scenery of downtown Wonju and nearby attractions in the evening. In particular, the Chiak Bridge area is equipped with LED indirect lighting and color-themed lighting over a stretch of about 127m, making the bridge and surrounding scenery glow brilliantly.

Around the Ganhyeon Tourist Site, after sunset, night landscape lighting shines on the bridge, forest, and cliffs, creating an even more vivid atmosphere. In some areas, media facades and musical fountains are also operated, offering a night view suitable for photography or a light stroll.

The recommended time is from after sunset to around 9:00 PM. The clearest time to see the lights is after it has become fully dark, and there may be a few more visitors on weekend or peak-season evenings.

Night programs or special tours may vary by season. In the past, there were autumn-night sightseeing tours, so it is best to check the latest operating schedule with Wonju local tourism information before your visit.

Seasonal Guide

Gangwon-do Wonju Chiaksan 벚꽃 단풍

Chiaksan is a mountain with distinct charm in all four seasons. For foreign travelers, preparing clothing and routes differently by season will make the experience more comfortable.

Spring

From mid-April to early May, azaleas, mountain cherry blossoms, wildflowers, and pale pink new leaves are beautiful. If you want to see cherry blossoms together with soft green scenery, this is the best time. The weather can be changeable, so bring a light outer layer.

Summer

From June to August, cool valleys and forest shade are major advantages. It is good for walks around the valley, forest trail trekking, and short hikes, and helps you avoid the hot weather. Since some paths may be slippery, shoes with good grip or hiking boots are recommended.

Autumn

The highlight of Chiaksan is the autumn foliage. It usually reaches its peak around late October, when deep valleys and ridges turn red and yellow, creating the most spectacular scenery. Reed grass and clear skies can also be enjoyed, making it especially good for photography. Since it is a popular season, weekdays are more comfortable than weekends.

Winter

In winter, the snowy scenery is very beautiful, and the whole mountain shows a quiet and majestic atmosphere. The view after snowfall is impressive, but because temperatures are low and the paths can freeze, it is best to prepare crampons, gloves, and winter clothing. Some sections may slow down due to snow or ice.

Travel Tips

The most popular periods are spring flower season and autumn foliage season. For family trips or a light nature experience, spring and summer are good; for the most impressive scenery, autumn is best; and for snow-covered mountain scenery, winter visits are recommended.

Local Tips

  • For beginner hiking routes to Birobong Peak, the course starting from Hoengseong Branch Bugok Trail Support Center is recommended.
  • The parking area near Bugok Trail Support Center may not be spacious, with space for about 20 cars.
  • There are western-style toilets at the starting point, and the facilities are relatively clean.
  • The area around the Birobong Peak summit marker can get crowded with people eating boxed lunches at noon, so it is better to plan rest or meals with the congestion in mind.
