5.3 km Above the Seomgang Cliffs: The Walking Route Through Sogeumsan Grand Valley

Sogeumsan Grand Valley in Wonju’s Ganhyeon Tourist Area is a paid walking attraction that connects a 200 m suspension bridge, the 360 m Sogeum Cliffside Path along the cliffs, and the 404 m Ulleong Bridge into one route. Since stairs and exposed sections continue throughout, check operating hours, the last admission time, and weather conditions first, and allow 2.5–3 hours for a safer visit.

5.3 km Above the Seomgang Cliffs: The Walking Route Through Sogeumsan Grand Valley

How Ganhyeon Tourist Site Changed from the 2018 Suspension Bridge to the 2025 Cable Car

Sogeumsan Grand Valley is a pedestrian-oriented tourism facility established at Ganhyeon Tourist Site in Jijeong-myeon, Wonju-si, Gangwon State. The starting point is the Sogeumsan Grand Valley Integrated Center at 317 Jijeong-ro, Jijeong-myeon, Wonju-si, and according to the facility guide, the tourist area extends around 12 Sogeumsan-gil, Jijeong-myeon. The main scenery consists of the cliffs around Samsancheon Stream and Seomgang River, which flow around Sogeumsan Mountain.

After opening the Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge in 2018, Wonju City linked the deck walking trail, Sogeum Salt Trail, Sky Tower, and Ulleong Suspension Bridge to create the current Grand Valley route. Since February 26, 2025, a 972-meter cable car has also operated between the lower Ganhyeon Resort parking lot and the upper suspension bridge area, consisting of 22 ten-person cabins.

A Cliffside Path Between the 200-Meter Suspension Bridge and the 404-Meter Ulleong Suspension Bridge

The Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge is described as 200 meters long, 100 meters high, and 1.5 meters wide. After crossing the bridge, visitors pass through the Sky Garden and deck walking trail before reaching the 360-meter Sogeum Salt Trail built along one side of a cliff approximately 200 meters above the ground. Because some sections open directly to the view beyond the railings, visitors with a fear of heights should discuss the difficulty and pace with their companions before entering rather than simply planning to rest midway.

At the end of the Sogeum Salt Trail, the Sky Tower is an observation facility overlooking Samsancheon Stream and the Sogeumsan ridgeline, after which visitors cross the 404-meter Ulleong Suspension Bridge. The Ulleong Suspension Bridge is introduced as approximately twice as long as the original suspension bridge, and because the bridge, cliff path, and observatory continue one after another, walking may be slower than on an ordinary trail.

Closing at 6 p.m. in Summer and 5 p.m. in Winter: How to Set Your Departure Time First

According to the official tourism guide, operating hours are 09:00–18:00 during the summer season from May to October and 09:00–17:00 during the winter season from November to April. Admission closes at 16:30 and 15:30, respectively. Therefore, if planning a round trip of at least two and a half hours, entering around 2 p.m. at the latest in summer and around 1 p.m. in winter is practical.

The regular closing day is every Monday; when Monday is a public holiday, the facility closes on the next weekday. Since early closure may occur due to weather conditions such as strong winds or heavy rain, or because of cable car capacity, it is advisable to confirm operations on the day of departure by calling 033-749-4860. The official information page is https://www.wonju.go.kr/tour/contents.do?key=5516.

Combined Ticket Prices as of February 26, 2025, and Two Routes: Cable Car and Trekking

Wonju City’s admission fee guide presents the rates applicable from February 26, 2025. The combined ticket is listed at 9,000 won for adults and 5,000 won for children. Groups of 20 or more, people aged 65 or older, people with disabilities, national merit recipients, and residents of Gangwon State may qualify for discounted admission subject to proof of eligibility. The detailed eligibility criteria and whether the cable car is included should be reconfirmed on the official fee table and at the ticket office before payment.

There are two official routes. The cable car route begins at the Sogeumsan Media Art Center and continues by cable car to the Suspension Bridge, Sky Garden, deck walking trail, Sogeum Salt Trail, Sky Tower, Ulleong Suspension Bridge, and escalator. The trekking route climbs from the deck road to the Suspension Bridge, after which it proceeds in the same direction. Several visitor reviews give the total round-trip distance as approximately 5.3 km and the duration as about two and a half hours, but the actual figures vary depending on fitness and waiting times.

Parking and On-Site Amenities Starting from the Integrated Center at 317 Jijeong-ro

Drivers should set the destination as the Sogeumsan Grand Valley Integrated Center at 317 Jijeong-ro, Jijeong-myeon, Wonju-si, Gangwon State. Wonju’s tourism guide states that the Ganhyeon Tourist Site parking lot can accommodate a total of 1,293 vehicles, with spaces for 1,121 regular vehicles, 59 vehicles for people with disabilities, 35 buses, and 29 electric vehicles. Parking is introduced as free, but because operations may change during events or peak seasons, on-site guidance should take priority.

The tourist site has 10 restroom buildings, as well as designated parking and restrooms for people with disabilities. However, because the route centers on the suspension bridge, cliffside decks, and long-distance walking, it is difficult to regard the entire tourist site as accessible by wheelchair or stroller. The conditions for using the cable car and boarding with mobility aids should be confirmed in advance, and the scope of foreign-language information services is best checked through the main telephone number.

Clothing and Fitness Considerations for Approximately 570 Steps and Cliffside Decks

Visitor reviews repeatedly mention that choosing the trekking route involves climbing approximately 570 steps before reaching the Suspension Bridge. Some reviews note that there are spacious areas and benches where visitors can rest along the stairs, but it is best to prepare walking shoes, a windbreaker, and water as basic essentials. In particular, it is safer not to underestimate the cliffside decks and suspension bridge sections immediately after rain or on days when strong winds are forecast.

For people with a severe fear of heights or knee pain, this may be a more demanding course than a “short scenic walk.” Conversely, it suits travelers who can accept the stair climb and want to see the bridges, cliff paths, and gorge connected in one direction. Using the cable car can reduce the initial uphill burden, but it does not eliminate the walking sections after the Suspension Bridge.

Choosing What to Combine with Wonju Rail Bike and Museum SAN at Ganhyeon Tourist Site

Sogeumsan Grand Valley is located within Ganhyeon Tourist Site, making it worthwhile to plan a broader stay in the surrounding area rather than simply visiting the Suspension Bridge and returning. Wonju’s tourism guide introduces Wonju Rail Bike, Museum SAN, and the Jo Eom Tomb Area as nearby attractions to combine with the visit. However, Grand Valley itself can take up to approximately three hours, so anyone booking another paid attraction on the same day should schedule it so that admission closing times and travel time do not overlap.

Because exact public transportation bus routes, stops, and walking times may change with route revisions, it is safest to reconfirm them according to the departure date through Wonju’s transportation information service or a map app. Travelers by car benefit from the spacious parking lot, but morning admission is advantageous on weekends and holidays because early closure may occur due to cable car capacity and on-site crowds.
