Kim Kwang-seok’s Voice Lives On 350 m from Bangcheon Market
Kim Kwang-seok’s Again Drawing Street is a 350-meter music-themed mural alley between Daegu Jung-gu’s Bangcheon Market and Sincheon-daero. It is the result of urban regeneration, created in 2010 when artists, merchants, and residents joined forces to transform the declining market alley, and it is free to walk through 24 hours a day.

Why the 1945 Bangcheon Market and the 2010 Mural Alley Came Together
Kim Kwang-seok Street is an approximately 350-meter alley between Bangcheon Market in Daebong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, and Sincheon-daero. Singer Kim Kwang-seok was born at a radio and electrical appliance shop in this area in 1964 and lived here until he was five. Based on those memories, the street was created in 2010 around the themes of his life and music.
This was not originally a tourist destination. Bangcheon Market was formed after the 1945 liberation, when returning residents began trading, but it declined due to urban hollowing-out and the influence of large distribution facilities. Through the “Byeol-ui-byeol Byeol Market” project in 2009 and the “Munjeonseongs i” project from 2009 to 2011, art was brought into the alley. On November 20, 2010, mural work began in earnest along a 90-meter section. The area later expanded to 350 meters between Suseonggyo and Songjuk Beauty Salon, and after a full renovation in autumn 2014, it became the present-day art district.
A Name from “Sing Again,” and the Reading Order of the 350-Meter Wall
The name “Draw Again” combines the meaning of recalling Kim Kwang-seok’s 1993 and 1995 albums Sing Again with the idea of remembering him and preserving him through drawings. In the alley, visitors can see murals and sculptures inspired by scenes of him singing, rolling noodles at a street food tent, and looking out at the sea.
A round trip along the street itself takes about 30 minutes. However, if you plan to read the mural inscriptions, take photos, and visit the shops around Bangcheon Market, it is better to allow 60 to 90 minutes. Tourist information introduces more than 10 cultural spaces, over 40 restaurants, and around 20 cafés in the area. Rather than choosing just one destination in advance, the route works best if you walk through the entire alley first and then choose a shop where you can take a break.
Weekend 14:00–15:00: Song Requests at the Alley Broadcasting Studio
Kim Kwang-seok Street is an outdoor alley that is open year-round without operating-hour restrictions, and admission is free. Inquiries can be made to the Kim Kwang-seok Street Operations Committee at 053-218-1053, and the official website is https://kimkwangseok.or.kr.
Every weekend from 14:00 to 15:00, the Alley Broadcasting Studio, operated by a Jung-gu district cultural tour guide, is Informationed as accepting personal stories and song requests. However, outdoor programs may vary depending on the weather and event operations, so if you are visiting specifically for this time slot, it is safest to confirm by phone on the day. The street has the information center “Sokdak-sokdak Sudabang,” benches, an outdoor performance area, a walking path, restrooms, and the Alley Broadcasting Studio.
About 350 m from Kyungpook National University Hospital Station Exit 3, and About 650 m from Daebonggyo Station
The street address is 2238 Dalgubeol-daero, Jung-gu, Daegu. From Exit 3 of Kyungpook National University Hospital Station on Daegu Metro Line 2, walk straight for about 350 meters in the direction of Exit 2. You will reach the vicinity of the main gate of the Daegu Metropolitan City Waterworks Headquarters, where you can find the beginning of the street. Some other guides list the distance from Exit 3 as approximately 500 meters, so setting “Kim Kwang-seok Street” as your destination in a map app after leaving the station can help avoid confusion.
If you use Daebonggyo Station on Daegu Metro Line 3, the recommended route is to walk straight for about 650 meters from Exit 4. The Daegu City Tour downtown circular route also stops here and is Informationed as operating 12 circular trips per day at 40-minute intervals from Dongdaegu Station starting at 09:30. Operating days and stop times may change, so check the city tour operating information before boarding.
No Dedicated Parking: Check the Conditions for Daebaek Plaza Outdoor Parking First
The street itself has no dedicated parking facilities. Daegu tourist information states that Daebaek Plaza outdoor parking can be used and that, on weekdays, vehicles with a Kim Kwang-seok Street leaflet stamp receive two hours of free parking. Whether this applies on weekends, public holidays, and during events, as well as the number of available spaces, may vary on site. If you are arriving by car, it is best to check the parking lot’s operating conditions again before setting out.
The alley is not wide, at approximately 4 meters, and pedestrian traffic may slow when visitors to Bangcheon Market and Daebong-dong’s commercial district overlap. If you want to take photos and move on quickly, consider a weekday afternoon; if you want to hear the song-request broadcast, consider around 14:00 on a weekend. Stroller rental is not available. On rainy days, viewing and photographing the murals can be inconvenient, so a rain poncho that leaves both hands free is more practical than an umbrella.
An Open Alley with Tactile Murals and Braille Signs; Strollers Cannot Be Rented
The entrances and exits are wheelchair accessible, and accessible restrooms, Braille information signs, audio guidance devices, and some tactile murals are installed. This is not a controlled indoor route like a museum, so wheelchair and stroller users should allow for changes in usable space depending on café outdoor seating, pedestrians, and objects placed along the edges of the alley.
Daegu tourism materials classify it as a recommended destination for English-, Chinese-, and Japanese-speaking visitors as well. Pets are allowed provided they are kept on a leash and owners carry bags for disposing of waste. It suits people who want to calmly enjoy music and murals, but if you expect a large exhibition hall, a scheduled guided tour, or indoor viewing, it may better suit your purpose to reserve and check the nearby Kim Kwang-seok Story House as well.
From GukchaeNational Debt Repayment Movement Memorial Park to Geondeulbawi Rock: Connecting with Jung-gu Course 4
Kim Kwang-seok Street is included in Course 4 of the Daegu Modern Alley Tour, “Samdeokbongsan Culture Road.” The sequence presented in official tourism materials is Gukchaebosang Undong Memorial Park–Samdeok-dong Culture Street–Kim Kwang-seok Street–Daegu Cultural Foundation–Bongsan Culture Street–Daegu Hyanggyo–Geondeulbawi Rock. Kim Kwang-seok Street itself takes about 30 minutes, but to continue through the entire course on foot, it is realistic to set aside nearly half a day even excluding meal and rest times.
Bangcheon Market, which connects directly to the street, is important for understanding the background behind the site’s creation. Rather than turning back after seeing only the murals, look together at the market’s old alleys and the points where the cafés and workshops of Kim Kwang-seok Street meet them. This reveals the context of a commercial-district regeneration project that left changes in the local neighborhood, rather than merely a single tourist sculpture. The area is also known as a filming location for the drama Hyde, Jekyll, Me.
30 Minutes in the Daytime, 90 Minutes Around Sunset: Allocating Time by Purpose
If it is your first visit, start near Exit 3 of Kyungpook National University Hospital Station during the day, see the murals and information facilities, and finish toward Bangcheon Market; this makes it easier to understand the layout. A quick walk takes 30 minutes, while an itinerary including murals, sculptures, and cafés is best given 60 to 90 minutes. Although passage is possible at night, individual shop hours are separate from the street’s 24-hour access.
A 2022 travel guide stated that more than 5,000 people visit on an average weekend, so the alley may be crowded on weekend afternoons with photographers and café customers. To avoid crowds, consider walking the 350 meters first on a weekday morning or before lunch, then moving on to a meal at Bangcheon Market or Bongsan Culture Street.
