The' stay-oriented mountain festival' held on the lawn square below dramatic cliffs
I will never forget the first moment I saw Daedunsan. Outside the cable car window, near-vertical granite cliffs rise like folding screens, and in between them, the red Geumgang Cloud Bridge hangs dizzyingly in the air. I understood in five minutes why it is called the Geumgangsan of Honam. The 2026 Wanju Daedunsan Festival will be held on this very mountain for two days, from Saturday, June 13 to Sunday, June 14, across the Daedunsan Lawn Square area. The slogan is 'Sweat into challenge, wind into healing,' and after going there, I thought it really was the perfect phrase. You climb to Macheondae while working up a sweat, then cool off in the ridge wind; that flow runs throughout the entire festival.
This is not just an event where you watch a stage and leave. The core is a program of 'walking and staying.' From the roughly 52 km 'Wanju 9 Scenic Long-Distance Trail' that starts at the Wanju County Office and links Oseong Hanok Village, Cheondeungsan, and Daedunsan Macheondae over 2 nights and 3 days, to the roughly 15 km loop hiking route that passes the cable car, Macheondae, and Nakjodae before reaching the festival site, to the 1 night and 2 day loop backpacking course where you walk the ridge by day and camp while enjoying media art and DJ performances at night, and finally to the 3.4 km Milky Way loop trail trekking course that anyone can enjoy at a relaxed pace, there are four distinct programs. By the way, this festival used to be the signature event of Wanju until 2006, then it was discontinued, and after being revived in 2023, this year marks its 4th edition.

A foreign traveler's day: from booking to cable car to heading home
First, the most important thing. Entry to the festival grounds itself is free, but the four trekking programs are first-come, first-served through advance registration. Registration was accepted only online through the official festival website from May 4 to May 22, and it closes once the quota is filled. So if you want to join the long-distance trail or backpacking course, you need to apply in advance, and the participation fee varies by course, so it is best to check the official website. Even if you missed the application window, don't worry. You can still freely browse the stage performances on the lawn square, the outdoor and camping equipment expo, the food market, and the hands-on booths without a reservation.
I went by public transportation. To be honest, Daedunsan is not the easiest place to reach without a car. The cleanest route is to go to Jeonju Express Bus Terminal or to Daejeon West or East Bus Terminal, then transfer to a direct bus bound for Daedunsan Provincial Park. Direct buses from Jeonju run about 8 times a day, those from Daejeon West about 6 times, and those from Daejeon East about 2 times, so the schedule is not very frequent, and you should definitely check the timetable in advance. Once you get off at the provincial park entrance, the cable car boarding area and restaurant strip are right there. If you are driving, the provincial park parking lot is free, so it is convenient.
When you arrive, the first thing to do is stop by the festival information desk and get your visitor wristband. This wristband is the key. Wear it, and you can get a discount of 1,500 to 3,000 won on Daedunsan Cable Car fares, plus 30% off the Daedunsan Hotel sauna and 10% off at the cafe. Nearby restaurants also participate with 10% discounts, so after a sweaty hike you can relax in the sauna and then enjoy a discounted set meal. The cable car takes about 5 to 7 minutes from the lower station to the upper station, and from there, if you continue through the Geumgang Cloud Bridge and the Samseon Stairs to the summit of Macheondae, you should allow 3 to 4 hours round trip. The Samseon Stairs on the way to the summit consist of 128 steel steps, which can feel quite dizzying, but the view from the top is absolutely worth the climb.

Food can be found in the restaurant area around the lower cable car station and at the festival food market. At the Yaksujeong rest stop midway up the mountain, they sell items like ginseng fritters, seafood scallion pancakes, acorn jelly, and ramen, and the pajeon tastes especially good when eaten while looking out over the ridge. However, it is better not to expect English signage or interpretation services. Because it is a mountain and outdoor festival, foreign-language signage is not very thorough, so you will need a translation app and some improvisation. Still, trekking, cable cars, and enjoying the scenery are activities that require almost no language, so foreign visitors can enjoy them fully. Getting home depends on the last bus. Since direct buses are infrequent and become even more scarce at night, plan backward from the time you descend from the summit so you do not miss the last bus. If you are not joining the backpacking course, I recommend coming down the mountain before sunset.
Practical tips to avoid wasted trips: payment, weather, and wind
Knowing a few things will reduce the chance of confusion. First, at small mountain rest stops or countryside restaurants, some places may not accept cards or may accept only cash, so it is reassuring to bring some cash.
And the wind. Even though it is mid-June and daytime temperatures rise, the ridges of Daedunsan tend to be windy. I recommend bringing a breathable long-sleeve top and a windbreaker. The ground has more rocks than soil and there are many steep sections, so trekking shoes or at least sneakers with sturdy soles are essential. Sandals or shoes with heels are truly inconvenient. Here is a summary of useful items to bring.
- Windbreaker and breathable long-sleeve top (for ridge winds)
- Trekking shoes with sturdy soles, plus an extra pair of socks
- Some cash (for small restaurants and rest stops)
- Water, snacks, and sunscreen
- A phone with a translation app installed
Lastly, be sure to check the weather. If mist and clouds roll in, there are days when you cannot see anything from the cloud bridge observatory. On rainy days, the steel stairs and rocks become slippery and dangerous, so it is important not to push yourself and to be flexible enough to switch your schedule to the loop trail or to the expo and performances.
So, who would I recommend it to?
If you are a traveler who enjoys sweating it out and hiking through spectacular scenery, this festival is almost a perfect stage. At the same time, even if the 52 km trail feels too demanding, you can start with the 3.4 km Milky Way loop trail, so there is no need to hesitate and say, 'I am a beginner at hiking.' One ride on the cable car brings you 90% of the cliff views. Spend a day feeling Daedunsan with your whole body at your own pace, then come down and finish with a sauna and some food. If a friend wants to truly experience a Korean mountain, I would confidently recommend this festival.

| Transportation accessibility | 2.5 | Direct buses reach the provincial park entrance, but departures are infrequent and you need to watch the last bus; driving is convenient thanks to free parking |
| Facilities for foreign visitors | 2.5 | The cable car and restaurant area are concentrated near the entrance, making movement convenient, but foreign-language convenience is limited |
| Local cultural experience | 4.0 | Stay-oriented programs that deeply experience Daedunsan nature, such as the Wanju 9 Scenic Trail, backpacking, and the Milky Way loop trail |
| Value for money | 4.0 | Festival entry is free, and the wristband applies discounts to the cable car, sauna, cafe, and restaurants |
| Cleanliness/Safety | 3.5 | There are dizzying sections such as steel stairs and the cloud bridge, so shoes and weather require caution, but the trails are well maintained |
| Food and convenience facilities | 4.0 | Plenty of options, including the food market, entrance restaurants, and dishes like pajeon and ginseng fritters at the Yaksujeong rest stop |
