A summer night when the Express Bus Terminal Plaza turns into a stage

When I got off the subway and came up to street level, a stage was standing in the plaza of the Express Bus Terminal, which I always used to pass by while rolling my suitcase. The Seocho Music and Art Festival (SMAF) is Seocho District's signature summer festival. It started in 2023 and has grown every year as a youth-planned festival, unfolding against the backdrop of the Seoul Express Bus Terminal area and the "Goteo-Sevit Tourism Zone." The biggest appeal of this festival is that the very center of a transportation hub transforms into a cultural and arts plaza. During the day there are art booths and hands-on zones, and after sunset the plaza fills with live stages.

What I especially liked was how clearly the two days had different vibes. One day is centered on the live music stage as "Music Dive," and the other is "Fashion Dive," combining a fashion show and performances, so I came for the music and ended up checking out the fashion stage the next day too. The fusion K-culture stage that blends music and fashion was a perfect match for the Goteo-Sevit Tourism Zone.

A festival you can just walk into without a ticket

As a traveler, the first thing I wondered was whether I needed to buy tickets in advance, but there is no need to worry about that here. Admission is free, so you can simply walk into the plaza without booking or stressing about sold-out tickets. Some hands-on programs do require payment, so it is helpful to have a card or mobile payment ready for small purchases. The area around the plaza is surrounded by department stores and an underground shopping district, so water, snacks, and restrooms can all be found in nearby indoor facilities, which is a big advantage of a downtown festival.

The route there is really simple. Get off at Express Bus Terminal Station, where Subway Lines 3, 7, and 9 meet, and the underground shopping arcades and department stores connect you straight to the plaza. You can avoid the summer heat or a passing shower by moving underground, so for a summer festival, it is quite easy to access. I left after watching the evening stage, and because it is a station served by three lines, getting home at night was easy too. Still, the live stages go on until late, so I recommend checking the last train time back to your accommodation in advance.

The language support is not very extensive. The stage hosting and information are centered on Korean, so it is hard to expect continuous English interpretation. But the music performances, fashion shows, and art exhibitions are the kind of content you can enjoy with your eyes and ears alone, even without understanding the words, so it was easy to sink into the atmosphere even without knowing the lyrics. Side programs that make you stay longer beyond the stage

If this had only been a main stage festival, I would have watched for an hour and headed back, but what kept me wandering around the plaza was the side programming. "Touch the Piano," where a piano is placed in the plaza and any passing citizen can sit down and play, had a lovely spontaneous moment as strangers gathered to listen to someone perform. "Traveling Library," where a library tours various parts of the neighborhood and curates books, was also perfect for sitting down briefly and resting.

If you have the stamina to walk a bit more, I recommend the "Seocho-Hangang Art Tour." It is a tour-style exhibition that runs from the Goteo-Sevit Tourism Zone to Sebitseom and the Banpo Hangang Park area, a course where you encounter artworks while strolling from the plaza toward the Hangang River. It lets you take in both the energy of a downtown plaza and the evening breeze by the river in one day, so it will be especially memorable for travelers visiting Seoul for the first time.

There are no tickets and no reservations, and it is the kind of festival where even if you happen to stop in while rolling your suitcase past, it still feels rewarding. The fact that you can enjoy this much music and art in one place for free, right in the center of Seoul, stayed with me long after I left.
