Mangwon Hangang Park, a festival that turns the whole summer night into an all-nighter

If you ask me where the most reliable summer getaway in Seoul is, I answer without hesitation: the Hangang River. The 2026 Hangang Festival_Summer runs from August 1 to 16, and nine Hangang parks, including Yanghwa, Mangwon, Nanji, and Yeouido, along with the river and riverside areas, become the full stage. Even the theme is "A cool and reliable getaway, refreshing Hangang River," so the program is designed so you can enjoy water play and performances in the city without traveling far. There are 16 programs by time slot so you can enjoy water activities and hands-on experiences during the day, and performances plus movies and dramas at night.

The stage that caught my eye the most was "Hangang Overnight 2 Days: All-Night Hangang ON," held around Mangwon Hangang Park and Seoul Battleship Park. As the name suggests, it is a festival where you stay up all night at the Hangang River, running from 8:00 p.m. on August 8 until 5:00 a.m. the next day. Seoul Battleship Park is the city government's first ship-themed park, created from three naval vessels: the retired Seoul Battleship, a Chamsuri patrol boat, and even a submarine, so spending the night with an actual warship floating on the river as the backdrop is the unique charm of this place.

Watch Coffee Prince straight through, then a horror movie at 3 a.m.

The All-Night Hangang ON site is divided into a binge-watching zone, an entertainment zone, and a food zone. The star of the binge-watching zone is Korea's representative summer drama, Coffee Prince 1st Shop. It runs all night from 9:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m., and since it portrays youthful love against a summer backdrop, it has a strong fan base that revisits it every summer. As you slurp ramen while feeling the river breeze, it feels like the summer on screen and the real summer night are overlapping.

The real twist comes at dawn. At 3:00 a.m., while waiting for the first train, they screen the horror film "Salmokji," which drew 3.24 million viewers after its release last April. Watching a horror movie about strange incidents at a reservoir from a dark riverside on the Hangang River is chillier than most ghost-story specials. In the entertainment zone, you can borrow comic books and board games from booths and enjoy them, so there is no time to get bored between screenings. If you are not confident about staying up all night, the all-night walking event "Hangang Night Walk 42K," starting from Yeouido Hangang Park on August 1, is also a good alternative.

Water drone show, infinity pool concert, and even races with boats you make yourself

There is no shortage of things to enjoy even for people who find all-nighters burdensome. The highlight of this summer is the first water drone show ever held on the Hangang River. It takes place on August 1-2 as the "Hangang Summer Music Picnic" on the lawn near Yanghwa Bridge at Yanghwa Hangang Park, where 25 drones add LED lights, fireworks, and fountain-like streams of water to decorate the river surface. Along with that, jazz and K-pop cover performances that anyone can sing along to, such as "Red Sunset" and "To You," are also presented.

If you want to enjoy the water properly, I recommend "Hangang Music Pongdang," held from 8:00 p.m. on August 1-2 at the Nanji Water Playground. It is a water music concert where you watch DJ, rapper, and band performances while sitting in the water at a Hangang-view infinity pool, and anyone using the water playground can participate. The festival's most talked-about event, the "My Own Hangang Boat Race," is also too good to miss. You make your own boat with tubes and bamboo, float it on the Hangang River, and the goal is to be the first to bring back the fruit model at the turnaround point. It takes place on August 15 in front of the Jamsil Entrance at Jamsil Hangang Park.

Things foreign travelers should know in advance

The first thing to prepare is reservation. Most programs are free, but some experiences such as kayaking, yacht rides, and BBQ zones are paid, and reservations tend to fill up quickly. For example, the "My Own Hangang Boat Race" uses a team-based advance reservation system and requires a participation fee. If there is an experience you want, it is safest to make an online reservation in advance on the official website before the festival opens. On the other hand, there are many programs you can simply enjoy on site, such as All-Night Hangang ON and Hangang Music Pongdang, so there is plenty to see even without a reservation.

For transportation, Mangwon Station on Subway Line 6 is convenient for Mangwon Hangang Park. Seoul Battleship Park can be reached by taking Bus No. 9 from Exit 1 of Mangwon Station, getting off at the Hangang Park entrance stop, and walking for 7 minutes. You can go on foot, but for an all-night event I recommend traveling light and using public transportation. However, since All-Night Hangang ON runs until dawn, getting home is the key issue. If you miss the last subway, you will need to take the first train at dawn or an overnight bus, so check the route in advance. There is parking, but it gets crowded on weekend evenings, and some programs such as the race event do not provide parking support, so public transportation is easier from the start.

You should also prepare for a summer night. If you are joining daytime water-play programs, bring a swimsuit and a change of clothes. At night, a light outer layer for the river breeze, a picnic mat, and mosquito repellent will be useful. Payment by card and mobile pay is accepted at convenience stores and snack stands, but cash may be faster at food trucks or some booths, so bringing a small amount of cash can help avoid inconvenience. Toilets and convenience stores are scattered throughout the park, so you do not need to worry about those. English guidance is not very thorough for every program, but because there is a lot to enjoy visually—water play, drone shows, open-air movies—the language barrier does not feel too strong. That said, drama and movie screenings are mainly in Korean, so there may be limits to full understanding.

All programs may change or be canceled depending on weather conditions, so be sure to check the official website on the day before visiting. In short, this festival is perfect for travelers who love staying up all night and people who want to feel Seoul's summer mood properly without spending much money. The combination of drone lights over the river, movies that continue until dawn, and a bowl of ramen is a scene you can only experience on a Seoul summer night. If you are in Seoul this summer, spend at least one night entirely on the Hangang River.
