Jangheung Waterside, Where You Can See Pohang Reservoir’s Aquatic Plants and 40 cm Crucian Carp
Pohang Reservoir is introduced as the oldest of the large reservoirs in the reclaimed land created by blocking the Gwanheung embankment, offering a scenic waterside setting. It is open year-round and free of charge, but publicly available information on buses and nearby stations, the extent of trails open to visitors, and activities beyond fishing is limited, so take particular care to verify the address.

The Oldest Reservoir in the Reclaimed Land Created by Blocking Gwanheungmak in Jangheung
Pohang Reservoir is listed at 41 Sinheung 2-gil, Daedeok-eup, Jangheung-gun, Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City. Korea Tourism Organization’s VisitKorea introduces it as the oldest of three large reservoirs built in reclaimed land created by blocking Gwanheungmak.
However, the listed coordinates are 35.262153° north latitude and 126.712435° east longitude, while the separately entered address is Samgye-myeon, Jangseong-gun, Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City. Because it has not been confirmed whether the Daedeok-eup address in the public tourism information matches the coordinates and administrative district, foreign travelers should compare “Pohang Reservoir” with the road-name address in a map app before departing.

Open year-round and free of charge according to the 2026 information
As of September 2026, public tourism information lists Pohang Reservoir’s hours as “open at all times,” its closing days as “open year-round,” and its admission fee as “free.” Since no separate ticket booth or admission-ticket procedure is listed, there is no need to calculate a closing admission time as you would for a paid tourist attraction.
The contact is the Daedeok-eup Administrative Welfare Center at 061-860-8323. The reservoir’s own operating hours, admission cutoff time, separate official website, and main telephone number have not been confirmed. The publicly listed official URL is the Pohang Reservoir page on Korea Tourism Organization’s VisitKorea website.
- Operation: Open at all times
- Closed: Open year-round
- Admission: Free

A crucian carp fishing spot shaped by aquatic plants and a muddy bottom
Korea Tourism Organization explains that aquatic plants and floating aquatic vegetation are widely distributed across Pohang Reservoir. The bottom is described as being rich in mud, with abundant aquatic plants providing good habitat for crucian carp. The site is known as a destination for anglers seeking large fish, as crucian carp exceeding 40 cm have been caught there.
Fishing information mentions wild shrimp, earthworms, and dough bait. Wild shrimp are introduced as effective bait at night, earthworms in the morning, and dough bait during the daytime. Despite the reservoir’s abundant aquatic plants, it is also described as a place where dough-bait fishing works well. However, because permitted fishing zones and whether cooking, camping, or water recreation are allowed have not been confirmed, it is best not to plan on setting up equipment or making a fire arbitrarily by the water.

Visitors can arrive by car, but parking fees are unspecified
Public tourism information states that parking is available, but the location of an official parking lot and parking fees for Pohang Reservoir itself have not been confirmed. Rental-car users should therefore not assume that there is a large parking lot directly in front of the destination; they should check actual available parking locations in a map app before departing.
Railway station names, exit numbers, bus routes, stops, and walking times from stops are also not listed in the public tourism information. Jangseong-gun is introduced as a transportation hub located along the Honam Expressway, National Routes 1 and 24, and the Honam railway line. It is stated that the Namhae Expressway provides access toward Gwangju, Suncheon, and Busan, while the 88 Expressway provides access toward Daegu.
A guide to Jangseong-gun once stated that flying from Seoul takes approximately 40 minutes, but this figure is based on a search page from 2018. It does not indicate the current airport transfer time to Pohang Reservoir or a direct transport connection, so foreign visitors should not calculate that they can arrive directly from the airport.
Points where level changes, low-floor buses, and strollers become obstacles
VisitKorea states that there is a level change at Pohang Reservoir’s main entrance. It also notes that there is no designated parking area for people with disabilities and that access by low-floor buses is unavailable. Wheelchair users should therefore inquire in advance about the actual conditions at the vehicle drop-off point and along the route to the waterside.
Stroller rental is unavailable, and it has not been confirmed how widely the promenade is open around the reservoir. Public information does not state whether English guidance or an audio guide is available, whether photography is restricted, whether reservations are required, or whether cash payments are accepted. It is best not to assume that the entire deck can be used simply because this is a free outdoor space.
- Main entrance: Level change present
- Designated parking for people with disabilities: None
- Low-floor buses: Access unavailable
- Stroller rental: None
Public facilities and the local living area of Samgye-myeon
If you search using Samgye-myeon as the address, the area has the Samgye-myeon public administrative office complex in the Sachang-ri area. Approximately 1,000 people, including heads of local institutions and social organizations and residents, were expected to attend the completion ceremony for the Samgye-myeon public administrative office complex in 2013. Around the same time, Samgye Library was built with a total investment of 2 billion won, a total floor area of 627 m², and two above-ground floors.
Construction of Samgye Library continued for nine months, from March to November 2013. Samgye-myeon also has the Sangmu Sports Center. On September 4, 2024, a groundbreaking ceremony for the National Subtropical Crop Demonstration Center was held in the Sando-ri area of Samgye-myeon, attended by approximately 200 people. Jangseong-gun envisioned the center as a base for responding to climate change in the agricultural sector.
0.53 km, 2.48 km, and 3.12 km destinations to combine with the reservoir
Public tourism information lists Jeongnamjin Arboretum, approximately 0.53 km away, Cheongwansan Literature Park, approximately 2.48 km away, and Jangheung Hoeryeongjinseong Fortress, approximately 3.12 km away, as nearby attractions. These distances are the values shown on the information page and do not indicate actual walking times or pedestrian-accessible connecting roads, so you must separately calculate whether travel by car is necessary.
Gansujeong Pavilion, the Songheum Tomb Area, and Giyeongjeong Pavilion have previously been introduced as an excursion route in Samgye-myeon. If your itinerary confirms an address in Samgye-myeon, these three sites can be considered historical excursion candidates, but travel distances from Pohang Reservoir and public transportation connections have not been confirmed.

Numbers to check when choosing breakfast and accommodation
If you plan to eat in the Samgye-myeon area of Jangseong-gun, Sachang Ttukbaegi is listed at 18 Sachang-ro, 061-392-8767, and is open from 7 a.m. Pungwon Restaurant is at 28 Sachang-ro, 061-394-8390, and Sandelbaram is listed at 4 Jusan 1-gil, 061-392-9152.
Accommodation options include Sol Lake Pension at 17 Jeonggak-gil, with the contact numbers 061-393-7880 and 010-6605-1561. Jangseong Suyangho Pension is listed at 197 Suyang-ro, Samseo-myeon, with the number 010-3665-5010. These restaurant and accommodation listings do not mean that they are facilities operated by Pohang Reservoir or within walking distance, so confirm reservations and travel times separately by telephone.

If fishing is not your purpose, prepare for a brief visit
Pohang Reservoir is not a facility such as an exhibition hall or experience center with a fixed viewing route and recommended duration. Since the recommended viewing time, total walking distance around the reservoir, and the deck’s officially open area have not been confirmed, first-time foreign visitors should plan it as a waterside destination where the address and parking location are established first, rather than as a tourist attraction to explore all day.
Because aquatic plants and floating vegetation spread widely and the information centers on crucian carp fishing, visitors whose purpose is photography or enjoying the waterside scenery should prepare conservatively in terms of footwear and walking routes. Conversely, anglers targeting crucian carp around 40 cm in length may use the bait information as a reference, but because permitted areas, safety facilities, and seasonal restrictions are not separately provided, they should not make assumptions on site.
