How the 1987 Jeodo Land-Connected Bridge Became a Skywalk

Jeodo Kwat River Bridge Skywalk is located at 1872-60 Haeyanggwwangwang-ro, Gusan-myeon, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Jeodo is an island connected to the mainland by a bridge, and this bridge opened in 1987 to connect Gusan-myeon with Jeodo. At the time, it was called the Jeodo Land-Connected Bridge.

When a new bridge opened right next to it in 2004, the old bridge was converted for pedestrian use only. The concrete floor was later removed and specially manufactured tempered glass was installed, and the current skywalk opened in March 2017. As of November 2019, cumulative visitors were reported to have reached 1.63 million.

The Section Where You Actually Walk on a Glass Floor on the 170 m Bridge

The bridge is a steel structure 170 m long and 3 m wide. Despite being called a skywalk, the entire floor is not made of glass. Only the central section has a transparent tempered-glass passage measuring 80 m long and 1.2 m wide.

Below the glass floor, you can see a small strait and the sea 13.5 m below. On the sections without glass, trick-art photo zones use optical illusions, so it is easy to miss the actual layout if you think this is a facility consisting only of a glass walkway.

Why It Is Called “Kwai River”

The current name derives from David Lean’s film The Bridge on the River Kwai. The name is said to have been inspired by the bridge’s resemblance to the railway bridge over the Kwai River in the border region of Thailand and Myanmar.

Therefore, this is not a film location but a tourism name combining the form of the former Jeodo Land-Connected Bridge with the film title. In 1987, it was a bridge connecting vehicles with the island, but after a new bridge was built in 2004, it was converted into a pedestrian facility. This was the key event that created its current tourism structure.

Seasonal Hours Starting at 10:00 and Free Admission Information

According to tourism information, the operating hours are 10:00–22:00 from March through October and 10:00–21:00 from November through February. A recent visitor review from June 2026 described admission to both Jeodo Beach Road and Kwat River Bridge as free. However, the latest official fees and closing days could not be confirmed in publicly available materials, so it is safer to contact the official tourism information office before setting out rather than traveling a long distance based solely on the free-admission information.

The official tourism inquiry telephone number is 055-225-3705, and the official Changwon tourism URL is http://culture.changwon.go.kr/index.changwon?contentId=130&bbsId=BBSMSTR_000000000082&nttId=7995&menuNo=11010000&upperMenuId=11000000. There is also a notice that access may be restricted for safety on days when strong winds, rain, snow, or facility inspections make restrictions necessary.

From Masan Station to the Jeodo Land-Connected Bridge Entrance by Bus 61

Visitors from outside the area can plan their trip from Masan Station Square. The suggested route is to take local bus 61 from Masan Station Square and travel via Masan City Hall, Kyungnam University, the entrance to Annyeong Village, Ukgok Village, and Gubok-ri to the Jeodo Land-Connected Bridge; the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.

The suggested alighting stops are “Jeodo Village Entrance” or “Kwat River Bridge Entrance.” Since the current service status, intervals between buses, and the exact walking distance from the stop to the skywalk could not be confirmed in publicly available materials, it is best to avoid itineraries that rely solely on the bus and arrive late.

Weekend Parking and What to Prepare at the Entrance

The address is 1872-60 Haeyanggwawangwang-ro, Gusan-myeon, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Visitor reviews mention a public parking lot nearby, and some cases describe parking as free, but the number of available spaces and official fees have not been confirmed. A June 2026 review said there were no vacant spaces at the public parking lot in front of the bridge on a weekend afternoon, so drivers should first consider the possibility that it may be full at that time.

Recent visitor reviews state that drinks and food are prohibited in the skywalk section and must be left at the storage rack at the entrance. Reviews indicate that walking across the bridge and looking around the surroundings takes about 30 minutes, while an itinerary combining it with Jeodo Beach Road has allocated 4 hours and 30 minutes, from 11:00 to 15:30.

The Difference Between Day and Night and Connection to Jeodo Beach Road

During the day, the main experience is looking down at the sea surface 13.5 m below from the central tempered-glass section. Since about 30 minutes is mentioned for walking across the bridge and looking around, it suits itineraries seeking a short view of the strait and photo opportunities rather than a long trek.

LED lights are turned on at night. Visitor reviews introduce it as a place to enjoy the night view, but the seasonal closing times differ—22:00 from March through October and 21:00 from November through February—so nighttime visitors should calculate both their arrival time and transportation home. After crossing the bridge, you reach Jeodo proper, with connections to Jeodo Beach Road and coastal walking trails.

The Slow Mailbox and Practical Considerations Before Visiting

A “slow mailbox” service began when the skywalk opened. Visitors can write down the memories of the day in a letter, which is then delivered after one month or one year. It is suitable for travelers looking for a keepsake that can be sent directly from the bridge.

On the other hand, wheelchair and stroller accessibility, English information and audio guides, photography restrictions, regular closing days, parking capacity, and bus intervals could not be confirmed in publicly available materials. It may be less satisfying for people who are uncomfortable with glass floors, want to enter immediately while carrying food, or expect to find parking on a weekend afternoon. Since access may be restricted during strong winds, rain, snow, or facility inspections, the most direct option on bad-weather days is to call 055-225-3705 and ask whether it is operating.
