When driving from Seoul, Incheon, or other areas, the official route is to take the Dangjin Interchange on the Seohaean Expressway, head toward Hapdeok, then pass National Routes 34 and 32 and Sinseok Intersection before entering Sinri Shrine. Why Sinri Village became a center of Catholicism in Joseon

Sinri Shrine is classified as a historical heritage site by Chungnam Tourism. Sinri Village is introduced as one of the first areas to accept Catholic teachings when Catholicism began entering Joseon, and is known as a place that later played a major role in establishing Catholicism in Joseon.

Because of this background, the shrine today is more than a simple outdoor walking area. The residence where Bishop Daveluy lived in hiding, chapels dedicated to the saints, the Martyrs Memorial Hall, and the Martyrdom Art Museum are located together within and around the shrine. From Bishop Daveluy’s residence in hiding to the five martyrs

Bishop Saint Daveluy Antoine was born in Amiens, France, on March 16, 1818, and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1841. He entered Joseon through Hwangsan Harbor in Ganggyeong, Chungcheongnam-do, at around 8 p.m. on October 12, 1845, and was ordained auxiliary bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Joseon in 1857.

After the Byeongin Persecution of 1866, Bishop Daveluy became the fifth bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Joseon. On March 30 of the same year, five saints were martyred at Galmaemot. The five saints of Sinri Shrine are Bishop Daveluy Antoine, Father Aumaitre Peter, Father Huin Lucas, Hwang Seok-du Lucas, and Son Ja-seon Thomas. Bishop Daveluy conducted pastoral work in Joseon for 21 years before being martyred at the age of 48.

See portraits and 13 documentary paintings at the Martyrdom Art Museum

The Martyrdom Art Museum is introduced as Korea’s only martyrdom art museum, exhibiting portraits of the five Sinri saints and 13 documentary paintings depicting their martyrdom.
