Best Time to Visit
Seosan Haemieupseong Fortress is best visited in spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and the grass and sky blend beautifully. In particular, April to June and September to October are comfortable for walking because it is neither too hot nor too cold.
The most pleasant times are early morning or late afternoon. In summer, midday can be hot, so visiting in the morning is better. In winter, daylight is short, so morning to early afternoon is safer and more comfortable than late afternoon.
To avoid crowds, a weekday visit is recommended. Weekends are relatively busy, and certain Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays can be even more crowded. If you want a quiet visit, Tuesday to Thursday mornings are the best choice.
Visiting hours are 05:00-21:00 during the summer season (March to October) and 06:00-19:00 during the winter season (November to February). For foreign travelers, a weekday morning in autumn or a late afternoon in spring is the most practical choice to avoid heat and crowds.
How Long to Stay
If you tour Seosan Haemieupseong Fortress quickly, it takes about 1 hour; a more typical relaxed visit to see the fortress walls and interior properly takes about 2 to 3 hours. If you plan to also visit nearby Haemi Martyrs’ Shrine or attractions in downtown Seosan, setting aside half a day is practical.
How to Get There
Haemieupseong is in the center of Haemi-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, so the most practical way is usually to travel via Seosan by bus.
Subway + Bus
There is no subway that goes directly to Haemieupseong. For foreign travelers, the easiest way is to take the Seoul subway to the express/intercity bus terminal, then take a bus to Seosan.

Walking
If you get off at the main Haemi stop, Haemieupseong is within walking distance. Since it is located in the middle of town, the large fortress walls are easy to spot right away. If you are unsure about the route, search for "Haemieupseong Fortress" in a map app.
Tip: Korean local buses may have limited English announcements, so it is helpful to save the destination in Korean as "Haemieupseong Fortress".
Photo Spots
- Stone wall path along the fortress: A great place to take photos while walking along the stone path inside Haemieupseong. In sections where the wall continues for a long stretch, try shooting with the stone wall to your side and facing along the direction of the path for an atmospheric photo. Late morning to early afternoon offers soft light that is good for walking shots.
- Bamboo grove path: The bamboo grove trail inside the fortress has beautiful shade and a green background. Shooting straight ahead along the direction of the bamboo grove creates a strong sense of depth. A morning visit is quiet and offers clean light.
- Mugunghwa Hill: Mugunghwa Hill inside the fortress is a great place for flower photos. Standing with the flower field in the background and facing inward toward the fortress brings out the colors well. July to October, during the blooming season, in the morning or late afternoon is best.
- Around the fortress gate: If you want to capture the traditional atmosphere of Haemieupseong, the area in front of the gate is ideal. Try photographing while facing the gate directly or capturing a scene passing through the gate. In the early morning, there are fewer people, making it easier to take clean photos.
- Silhouette shots on the fortress wall: In wide sections where the wall is visible, placing a small person in the frame can create an atmospheric shot. Try framing toward the sky outside the fortress wall so the sky fills the image widely. Late afternoon provides the softest and most emotional light.
Night View
Seosan Haemieupseong Fortress offers a calm and impressive atmosphere different from the daytime once the fortress lights come on after sunset. In particular, the walls of Jinnammun, the interior of the fortress, and the area around the dongheon are lit, making the outline of the fortress and the traditional spatial layout stand out more clearly.
The nighttime lighting has recently been upgraded with bright LED lights, allowing visitors to enjoy a clearer and more comfortable night view overall. The atmosphere is more serene than flashy, making it a pleasant place for an evening stroll.
The recommended visiting time is between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM, when the lights are operating every day. Visiting right after sunset is especially beautiful because of the contrast between the fortress walls and the sky.
Currently, the main night attraction is the always-operating landscape lighting. Before visiting, it is a good idea to check again whether any night events are scheduled and whether operating hours have changed depending on the season or local conditions.

Spring: About 600 cherry trees line the Haemicheon stream, turning the walking paths into a sea of cherry blossoms in spring. Autumn: In September and October, festivals are held around Haemieupseong, making this one of the liveliest times of year. It is recommended because you can enjoy fortress walks and the atmosphere of local events in cool weather. The surrounding scenery also becomes more serene in autumn.
Winter: In winter, there are relatively fewer visitors, making it a good time for a quiet tour. It is suitable for strolling while enjoying the calm fortress scenery and crisp air. Winter operating hours are 06:00-19:00, so check the time if visiting late in the afternoon.
Practical tip: The tourist information center is open from 10:00-17:00. Since it is an outdoor attraction, preparing seasonal clothing, a sun umbrella, and comfortable shoes will make your visit more convenient.

- At Haemieupseong, a folk song listening experience is usually offered, and performances are held 1 to 2 times per week, so it is best to check the schedule in advance and go at the right time.
