How King Sukjong’s 1706 Royal Plaque Created the Name “Hyeonchungsa”
Hyeonchungsa is a shrine honoring Admiral Yi Sun-sin. It was first established in 1706, the 32nd year of King Sukjong’s reign, following a petition by Confucian scholars from Chungcheong Province. The following year, in 1707, King Sukjong bestowed a royal plaque bearing the name “Hyeonchungsa (顯忠祠).” Today, the entire historic site is designated Historic Site No. 155 under the name “Asan Historic Site of Admiral Yi Sun-sin.”
Yi Sun-sin was born in Seoul in 1545 but grew up in Asan, where his maternal relatives lived. He continued to live in the area after his marriage and trained in martial arts there. Hyeonchungsa is not merely a monument to a battlefield; it is a place where his upbringing, family history, and later commemorations converge. The reason Asan became the center of commemorating Yi Sun-sin becomes clear only when visitors continue past the Main Shrine to the old house and archery ground.
Two Layers of Hyeonchungsa: Abolished in 1868 and Rebuilt with Public Donations in 1932
Hyeonchungsa was demolished in 1868 under the decree abolishing Confucian academies, and ancestral rites were suspended for a period during the Japanese colonial period. Later, the Association for the Preservation of Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Historic Sites and the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper led a nationwide fundraising campaign and rebuilt the shrine on June 5, 1932.
The spacious grounds seen today were formed through a national project to develop the site as a sacred historic area, carried out from 1966 to 1974. Consequently, the grounds bring together memories of the Joseon-era shrine, the 1932 reconstruction, and commemorative spaces created during the 1960s and 1970s. Viewing it simply as a site with a single shrine building makes it easy to miss why the old house, lotus pond, memorial gate, and exhibition hall are located together on one property.
A 2–3-Hour Route Connecting the Main Shrine, Old House, Archery Ground, and Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin Memorial Hall
For first-time visitors, the easiest route to follow is from the entrance to the Main Shrine, Yi Sun-sin’s former home, the archery ground and memorial gate, and then the Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin Memorial Hall. Hyeonchungsa contains spaces related to Yi Sun-sin’s standard portrait and the Ten Scenic Views depicting his life. The memorial hall opened after the historic site was renovated from 2008 to 2011 and serves functions related to exhibiting artifacts, research, and education.
At the memorial hall, it is useful to focus on the significance of artifacts and materials related to Yi Sun-sin, including the Nanjung Ilgi war diary, historical documents, and his long swords. Since it cannot be assumed that every original artifact is always displayed in the same manner, visitors should follow on-site guidance regarding whether a particular artifact is on display that day. Combining a visit to the shrine with the exhibitions, the recommended stay is 2–3 hours.

Hyeonchungsa is open from 09:00 to 18:00 from March through October and from 09:00 to 17:00 from November through February. Admission is free. The main inquiry telephone number is 041-539-4600. Since it may be difficult to see both the Main Shrine and memorial hall in sequence just before closing, it is best to aim to arrive at least two hours before closing.
Regular closing days should be confirmed separately. If your visit falls on a Monday or a substitute holiday, check by phone before departing whether the site will be open. The Difference Between Hyeonchungsa-gil 126 and “48”: Which Address to Enter in Your Navigation System
The road-name address listed in Hyeonchungsa’s official tourism information is 126 Hyeonchungsa-gil, Yeomchi-eup, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. Since the provided designation Hyeonchungsa-gil 48 may be confused with a nearby location, it is safer to set the destination for a car navigation system or taxi as “Hyeonchungsa” or “126 Hyeonchungsa-gil, Yeomchi-eup, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do.”
Visitors arriving by car can use the on-site parking lot. However, temporary traffic controls and changes to parking operations may occur around events held near April 28, such as the Admiral Yi Sun-sin Festival, so visitors should also check Asan City’s event notices for the day.
How to Find a Bus Bound for the Hyeonchungsa Terminus from Onyangoncheon Station
The main rail access point is Onyangoncheon Station, served by Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1 and regular trains. From the station, visitors can take a city bus toward Hyeonchungsa or travel by taxi. Routes in the 900, 910, 920, and 930 series are listed as heading toward the Hyeonchungsa terminus.
Because bus schedules and routes may change frequently, the most accurate method is to search for “Hyeonchungsa” as the destination stop in the Asan City Bus Information System just before departure. The Asan City bus information telephone number is 041-540-2732. It is best to avoid boarding based solely on the route number without checking the route and service interval.
The April 28 Memorial Rite and When to Visit the 2025–2026 Korea Tourism 100
Yi Sun-sin’s birthday is known as the eighth day of the third lunar month in 1545, corresponding to April 28 on the solar calendar. In Asan, the Admiral Yi Sun-sin Festival is held every year around this date. Memorial rites and related programs may also be held at Hyeonchungsa, so visitors interested in historical events may wish to consider a visit in late April.
Conversely, if you want to explore the shrine, old house, and memorial hall quietly, it is better to avoid the potential crowds around the festival and visit on a weekday morning. Hyeonchungsa was also selected for the 2025–2026 Korea Tourism 100 list, so visitors should allow extra time for parking and navigating the grounds during peak season and on weekends.
Why to Ask About Slopes and Exhibition Hall Access Before Visiting with a Wheelchair or Stroller
Hyeonchungsa is a historic site with expansive outdoor grounds and widely dispersed shrine, old house, and exhibition hall areas.
