International contemporary art exhibitions in Cheonan since 1989

Arario Gallery was established in 1989. Arario Gallery Cheonan, founded through founder Kim Chang-il’s passion for art, has operated as a space introducing diverse contemporary art from around the world to Korean audiences.

According to the official introduction, Arario Gallery currently has three locations in Seoul, Cheonan, and Shanghai, China. It has contributed to regional cultural development through exhibitions encompassing painting, sculpture, and installation art, while also focusing on discovering Asian artists and introducing them internationally.

From Keith Haring in 2002 to Ryu In’s “Duality”

The exhibition history of the Cheonan space includes a 2002 solo exhibition by American pop artist Keith Haring and a 2004 solo exhibition by Sigmar Polke. In 2005, it held a group exhibition of artists from the Leipzig School, which carries on the German painting tradition.

It later broadened its scope with a 2010 group exhibition of Southeast Asian contemporary art, a 2012 exhibition of Chinese video art, a 2019 group exhibition of Chinese contemporary artists, and a 2022 exhibition of emerging Korean artists. This programming illustrates why the current gallery introduces both internationally renowned masters and emerging artists.

Ryu In’s solo exhibition “Duality,” opened on April 14, 2026

As of August 2026, Cheonan is hosting “Duality,” a solo exhibition of sculptor Ryu In (1956–1999), from April 14, 2026, through April 11, 2027. Ryu In is introduced as an artist who established a distinctive position in Korean contemporary figurative sculpture.

Ryu In’s artistic career lasted approximately 15 years, during which he produced about 70 works. Therefore, this exhibition is less a visit to see merely a few pieces and more an opportunity to explore, in solo-exhibition format, the sculptural world he created during his short career.

Arario Sculpture Park and the merchandise shop after an hour of viewing

A visit review from May 2022 described favorable conditions for viewing the works because there were not many people. Based on the same review, the exhibition is said to be a manageable size that takes about one hour to see, so visitors can first set aside roughly an hour in a downtown Cheonan itinerary.

User reviews on Chungnam Tourism praised its accessibility because it is close to Cheonan Terminal, while another review recommended visiting the merchandise shop and Arario Sculpture Park after the exhibition. However, specific information about wheelchair and stroller access, elevators and ramps, English signage, audio guides, permitted photography areas, and restricted-access zones could not be confirmed.
