Best Time to Visit

Jeonbuk Jeongeup Naejangsan 계절 봄 가을

Naejangsan can be visited throughout all four seasons, but the most recommended time is the autumn foliage season. In particular, early November is the most popular period, when the entire mountain turns its most beautiful colors.

However, this is also the most crowded time of the year. If you want to avoid crowds, visiting on a weekday in autumn is best, and if you must go on a weekend, arriving before 8:00 a.m. is recommended. Parking and entrance flow will be much easier.

Within the day, an early-morning visit is the most practical. It is relatively less crowded, movement is easier, and you can use the cable car and main exploration routes more comfortably.

Visit summary: the best season is autumn, the best time of day is early morning, and the best day of the week is a weekday. Conversely, weekend daytime in early November is the busiest period.

Also check the mountain entry hours. From April to October, the hours are 04:00-16:00, and from November to March, they are 05:00-15:00.

How Long to Stay

If you want a quick tour, about 1 hour is enough for a round-trip cable car ride (about 5 minutes one way) and viewing the upper observatory. In general, 1.5 to 2 hours is appropriate including waiting time and photo-taking, and if you also explore the surrounding trails, it is good to allow about 2.5 hours.

How to Get There

For foreign travelers, the most convenient option is usually to use KTX and then a bus.

By Train / Subway

There is no subway that goes directly to Naejangsan. First, take KTX from Seoul Station to Jeongeup Station. For example, there is a train departing Seoul Station at 06:21 and arriving at Jeongeup Station at 08:07. Jeongeup Station has only one exit, so it is easy to go outside.

By Bus

From Jeongeup Station to Naejangsan National Park, City Bus 171 is the most representative option. After leaving the station, walk to the bus stop and take Bus 171. It takes about 30 minutes.

If departing from Jeongeup Intercity Bus Terminal, you can also use Bus 171. However, during the foliage season and on weekends, the bus is very crowded, so using it as early as possible is recommended.

On Foot

Inside Jeongeup Station, there is only one exit, so walking is simple. After exiting the station, walk to the Bus 171 stop and take the bus. Once you arrive in the Naejangsan area, you can walk to the park entrance.

Photo Spots

  • Maple Tunnel: This is a representative photo spot inside Naejangsan Ecological Park. If you take a straight-on shot from the tunnel entrance toward the inside, the colors of the foliage and the perspective of the road stand out nicely. From late morning to early afternoon, the light is evenly distributed, making it easy to shoot, and in autumn it is the most popular place.
  • Stairway to Heaven: A famous photo spot installed in Naejangsan Ecological Park. If you shoot from the bottom of the stairs upward, the structure looks taller and more impressive. For people photos, it is good to have the subject stand in the middle or near the top of the stairs. A clear morning or around sunset is the most beautiful time.
  • Stone Pear Tree Blossom Point: During the flowering season, backlit photography works best. Do not stand with the sun behind you; instead, stand so that sunlight falls behind the flowers and point the camera toward the blossoms. Soft light in the morning or late afternoon is especially good.
  • Near the Observatory: After passing the observatory, it is good for capturing the surrounding scenery together with the atmosphere of the ecological park. If you want a wide background, position yourself with the observatory behind you and shoot toward the park. The afternoon is relatively bright and suitable for stable photos.
  • Near the Ecological Playground: This is a section after the observatory where you can naturally capture the rest area and park atmosphere. For portraits, shooting from the side along the walking trail gives a relaxed travel feeling. Morning or late afternoon, when the sunlight is not too strong, is recommended.

Night View

In the Jeongeup Naejangsan area, you can enjoy nighttime landscape lighting centered around the Naejangsan Cultural Plaza. The lighting around the plaza and LED decorations blend with the cypress forest and sculptures, creating a bright and pleasant atmosphere for walking.

In particular, the angel-themed sculptures and forest-path lighting around Naejangsan Cultural Plaza are popular photo spots. It is more like a park-style night view that you can enjoy while taking a leisurely walk, rather than an urban nightscape, and it is suitable as an evening stroll course for families or friends.

The recommended time is from after sunset until around 9:00 p.m. The lighting is most visible in the early evening, and if you go too late, some facilities or nearby businesses may be quiet, so an early-night visit is convenient.

In the Jeongeup area, a nighttime tour program with a moonlight theme is sometimes operated during the summer. Schedules may vary by season, so it is a good idea to check Jeongeup City tourism information or local event schedules before visiting.

Seasonal Guide

Spring: Cherry blossoms and azaleas bloom together, brightening the entire mountain. It is the best season for light walks, photography, and observing wildflowers. Popular sections can be crowded on weekends, so a morning visit is recommended.

Summer: The valleys and areas around the waterfalls are cool, making it a good place to escape the heat. It is suitable for short trekking and enjoying natural scenery, and comfortable sneakers are recommended because some sections may be slippery. Check trail conditions after rain.

Autumn: The representative season of Naejangsan, when the foliage reaches its most beautiful colors. Since the number of visitors is very high and parking lots and main access roads can be crowded, visiting on a weekday or early in the day is the most convenient. If you want vivid foliage scenery, this is the optimal time.

Winter: You can enjoy the calm scenery of the mountain in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Rather than vibrant colors, it is a season suited to tranquil nature and slow walks. Since the temperature is low and the paths can freeze, prepare warm clothing and anti-slip shoes.

Practical Tip: Naejangsan is a national park, so there is generally no separate admission fee or regular park parking fee, but during peak season, parking lots near Naejangsa and around the cable car can fill up quickly. During cherry blossom and foliage season, public transportation or early arrival is the most efficient choice.

Local Tips

Restaurants around Naejangsan are better enjoyed if you visit outside the busy hours.

It is also a good idea to prioritize places known as restaurants frequently visited by local Jeongeup residents.

Jeongeup City promotes hidden local restaurants through a method in which citizens visit in person, pay, and then leave SNS reviews, so it can be helpful to refer to local reviews and verification information.
