Sangju Gyeongcheonseom Park: Crossing an Island on the Nakdong River

Gyeongcheonseom Park is an ecological park surrounding a roughly 200,000-square-meter river island in the upper reaches of the Nakdong River. Visitors enter the island via Beomwolgyo and Nakganggyo bridges. Highlights include rapeseed flowers in spring, cosmos and buckwheat flowers in autumn, and views of the Nakdong River around sunset.

Why Gyeongcheon Island, an approximately 200,000㎡ river island, became a park

Gyeongcheon Island is a river island of approximately 200,000㎡ located in the upper reaches of the Nakdonggang River. The ecological park surrounding the island formed in the middle of the river is called Gyeongcheon Island Park, and the essence of the site lies not in its buildings but in the structure created together by the waterways, island, and riverside vegetation.

From the park, you can see scenery where the Nakdonggang River and the cliffs of Bibongsan Mountain meet. Walking trails and bicycle paths connect around the island, so the experience is closer to reading the terrain while moving along the riverside than to visiting a single exhibition hall.

Beomwolgyo and Nakganggyo, the two directions for entering the island

When approaching by car, there are two options. Park at the Gyeongcheon Island Park parking lot and cross Beomwolgyo, or park at the Hoesangnaru Tourist Area parking lot and cross Nakganggyo. The address of Gyeongcheon Island is 968-1 Osang-ri, Jungdong-myeon, Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Safety guidance at Beomwolgyo states that bicycles may not be ridden across the bridge and must be walked while being pushed. Visitor accounts also mention a wing-shaped sculpture in the middle of the bridge and a large moon sculpture near the far side, so cyclists should slow down before reaching the bridge.

Actual travel route starting from Sangju Station

Some sources state that it takes approximately 15 minutes by taxi from Sangju Station on the Gyeongbuk Line to Gyeongcheon Island. There is guidance that local buses can be used from Sangju Intercity Bus Terminal, but official sources do not confirm the bus route number or stop name for buses to Gyeongcheon Island.

Drivers may refer to the guidance that it takes approximately 10 minutes from the Sangju Interchange of the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway to Gyeongcheon Island. Sangju City operates a transportation page providing the locations of the terminal and railway station; the responsible department is the Transportation and Energy Division, and the contact number is 054-537-7378.

Visitor information from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Sangju City's living information page lists Gyeongcheon Island Park's operating hours as 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Other guidance introduces it as open year-round, and some sources state that admission is free. However, the park's latest official fee schedule could not be confirmed, so this article does not describe any separate ticketing procedure that might suggest paid facilities.

The main telephone number is 054-531-1996, and the Sangju tourism information page lists the Gyeongcheon Island Tourist Information Center at 170-7 Donam-dong, Sangju-si. The official tourism website is the Sangju City tourism website. Since the park's operating hours and free admission information appear on separate guidance pages, it is practical to plan a visit between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Seasonal scenery transformed by rapeseed flowers and cosmos

Rapeseed flowers bloom on Gyeongcheon Island in spring, while cosmos and buckwheat flowers can be seen in autumn. Even on the same river island, the riverside colors change depending on the time of year, so if flowers are your main purpose, it is better to choose the season before planning your route.

Around sunset, you can look toward the sunset beyond Gyeongcheon Island and the Nakdonggang River glowing golden. If you plan only a daytime walk, stay within the park's stated visitor hours. An article from 2022 reported that Nakganggyo's landscape lighting operated from 7:30 p.m. to 10:10 p.m., but its current operating status and hours cannot be confirmed.

Combining the 6 km loop trail with bicycle rentals

Visitor accounts introduce the Gyeongcheon Island loop trail as approximately 6 km long and taking about two hours. Walking paths have been developed within the park, and traditional pavilions and benches provide places to rest midway through the longer route. The bicycle path also connects to the Nakdonggang River bicycle route, allowing walking and cycling to be combined in one itinerary.

According to the page consulted, bicycle rental is listed at 5,000 won per hour for a single bicycle and 8,000 won per hour for a tandem bicycle, while kick scooters cost 3,000 won per hour. Because these rental fees may change, this article presents them only as the amounts listed on that page. At Beomwolgyo, bicycles must always be dismounted and pushed across.

Places to combine along the Gyeongcheon Island Riverside Breeze Trail

Course 1 of the Gyeongcheon Island Riverside Breeze Trail is introduced as a route that starts at the Gyeongcheon Island parking lot and proceeds through Donamseowon Confucian Academy, Sangjubo, the Bibongsan Mountain Observatory, Cheongnyongsa Temple, the Nakdonggang Hak Observatory, Hoesangnaru Guest Village, Nakganggyo, Gyeongcheon Island, and Beomwolgyo before returning. From the Nakdonggang Hak Observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Gyeongcheon Island and the Nakdonggang River.

For a shorter connected route, you can refer to Course 2 of the Riverside Breeze Trail, which links the Gyeongcheon Island parking lot, Beomwolgyo, Gyeongcheon Island, Nakganggyo, Hoesangnaru Guest Village, Gyeongcheongyo, the Bicycle Museum, and the Sangjubo Water Leisure Center. Nearby attractions include the Nakdonggang National Biological Resources Center, the International Equestrian Center, the Military Theme Park, and Donamseowon Confucian Academy.

Restrictions and preparations that are easy to overlook on a first visit

Gyeongcheon Island Park is not an indoor exhibition hall where visitors follow a fixed viewing route from a ticket office to a destination. It is an outdoor space reached by passing through the parking lot and across a bridge before entering the island's walking trails. Therefore, no separate source provides the walking distance from the ticket office to the island, and the time needed to cross Beomwolgyo or Nakganggyo should be included in your itinerary.

No confirmed guidance was found regarding photography restrictions, whether payment is cash-only, English guidance or audio guides, or detailed accessibility for people with disabilities and strollers. Groups of 10 or more can reserve Sangju City cultural tourism interpretation up to seven days before their trip, but this does not mean that regular interpretation is provided to individual visitors. Parking is available at the Gyeongcheon Island Park parking lot or the Hoesangnaru parking lot, and some sources state that it is free.
