A strange combination: Goryeong Night Walk, opening the night of Daegaya with fire

I don’t think many foreign friends have heard of the place name Goryeong. But this was the capital of the Daegaya Kingdom, which led the late Gaya Confederacy 1,500 years ago, and the Jisan-dong Tombs, lined along the mountain ridge, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. By day it is a quiet ancient capital with grassy burial mounds, but for three days from September 4 to 6, when the 2026 Goryeong National Heritage Night Walk takes place, the night becomes the star. Even the theme is "Daegayeo (Daegaya): Beautiful Night," and, true to its name, the program is filled with fire- and light-themed experiences. The venue is the Daegaya History Theme Tourist Site. It’s a large theme park with Ureukji Pond at its center, and I think the fire-falling performance on this waterside is the heart of this Night Walk.

The fire-falling performance is a traditional Korean fire show in which charcoal powder and the like are wrapped in hanji paper, hung on a string, and lit so that sparks scatter like snow. The sight of those embers falling onto and reflecting on the surface of Ureukji is the signature moment of this festival. Add to that the fire goblin performance, the candlelight gayageum concert, and a moonlit walk around the Jisan-dong Tombs, and the night is structured around two key themes: "fire" and "moonlight." It is a night landscape found nowhere in Europe, and uniquely in a small city in southern Korea.

A place you cannot reach by train — a day route with Daegu as your base camp

Let me start with the practical part. Goryeong does not have a train station. For foreign travelers, the most standard route is to come from Seoul to Dongdaegu Station by KTX, then take an intercity bus bound for Goryeong from Seodaegu Express Bus Terminal or Daegu Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal. The trip from Daegu to Goryeong takes a little over 40 minutes, so it is possible to stay in Daegu and make a same-day round trip in the evening. If you have a rental car, it is much more convenient; there is a parking lot at the main gate of the Daegaya History Theme Tourist Site, and the Daegaya Museum is across the road, so parking itself is not difficult.

Because this is an evening event, the return trip is the most important part. Intercity buses in small provincial cities often stop running late at night, so if you want to stay until the fire-falling performance or concerts end, it is safest to check the last bus from Goryeong in advance or consider returning by rental car or taxi. On this point, I really want to emphasize: "Be sure to compare the official guide’s end time for the day’s program with the last bus time." If you get stranded on the way back at night, it becomes a headache.

Once you arrive, the route is simple. Around Ureukji, Gokok Square, the music fountain, and the ancient house village are all connected on foot, and just across the road you can reach the Daegaya Museum and the Jisan-dong Tombs walking trail. Since all three are within walking distance, it feels like a compact tour of Daegaya in a short time. I recommend arriving a little early before sunset, taking a full lap around the theme park to soak in the daytime scenery, and then moving toward Ureukji once it gets dark.

How to choose from the eight nights — what to reserve and what to enjoy

The Goryeong Night Walk program is organized around the "8 NIGHTS" concept. These are divided into eight branches: night scenery, night history, night storytelling, night route, night fire, night market, night food, and night stay. Just from the names, you can see that they cover scenic viewing, historical experiences, storytelling performances, night walks, fire shows, night markets, food, and accommodation. Rather than trying to see everything, it is wiser to choose two or three and enjoy them in depth.

My priorities are as follows. First, of course, the Ureukji fire-falling performance and the fire goblin performance (night fire). Second, the candlelight gayageum concert (night storytelling), because the gayageum is an instrument that originated right here in Daegaya, and hearing it under candlelight is an experience only possible in Goryeong. Third, the moonlit walk around the Jisan-dong Tombs (night route), a special course that lets you walk the mound ridge listed as a World Heritage Site at night.

• Reservation tip: The "Jisan-dong Tombs Moonlit Walk" and the "Daegaya Playground - Daegaya Night Excavation Experience" may be partially available for advance reservation. Popular programs can fill up on site, so try to reserve these two in advance.
• Receipt event: There is a consumption-promotion program that gives souvenirs when you verify receipts from purchases made in Goryeong County on the same day. Do not throw away receipts from nearby restaurants or shops.
• Food: Food trucks gather in the night food zone, and a Daegayeo Market flea market also opens. It is a great place to solve dinner.

Let me be honest about the language situation. This festival mainly targets local Korean residents and family visitors, so detailed English interpretation or multilingual apps may be limited. That said, the core content such as the fire show, fire goblin performance, and gayageum concert is visual and auditory, so you can still enjoy it quite well without needing much language. Some food trucks and flea market stalls may accept only cash, so bringing small bills will make things easier.

What to bring before you go, and who I would recommend this night to

The night in early September has a fairly large temperature difference from the daytime. It is hot during the day, but by sunset it gets cool near the water, so a light outer layer is essential. The Jisan-dong Tombs walking trail and the Daegaya exploration forest path mix dirt paths and slopes, so sneakers are the right choice. The theme park is large, and even though there are lights at night, some sections are still dark, so if you are with children, be ready to turn on a flashlight or your phone light in advance. You can use the theme park facilities for restrooms and resting areas, and there are also places to sit and take a break, such as Ureuk Pavilion and Gokok Square.

Goryeong Night Walk is a good fit for people looking for a quiet, lyrical night with traditional fire shows and gayageum music against the backdrop of a World Heritage tomb complex, rather than a flashy big-city festival. I especially recommend it for travelers who want to see a "real small Korean city," or for couples and families who want to capture history and lights without being overwhelmed by crowds. If you see the sparks scattering over Ureukji with your own eyes, you will remember the unfamiliar name Goryeong for a long time.
