Why a 200 m tunnel from the Japanese colonial period became a tunnel of light
The foundation of Suyanggae Light Tunnel is an underground facility built during the Japanese colonial period. The tunnel in Aegok-ri, Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, is 200 m long and 5 m wide, and it was left unused for several decades after its construction.
On July 1, 2017, this abandoned tunnel reopened as Suyanggae Light Tunnel. Its present form came from transforming the existing dark passage into Korea’s first tunnel-type complex multimedia space by combining modern video, sound facilities, and an LED media facade without demolishing the original passage.
Five themes you will actually see inside the tunnel of light
The interior is arranged around five themes, including education, culture and art, nature-friendly experiences, and combined relaxation areas. Sections centered on light and video continue one after another, such as the Rainbow of Light and the Tunnel of Infinite Light, so it is closer to an audiovisual exhibition space than a place for quietly observing the original form of a historic tunnel.
The programs include experiences using LED media facades, LED flowers, and projection techniques. Media facades and projection mapping that use building exteriors like screens, 3D holograms, and augmented-reality technology have also been applied, and one program expresses the past and future through 32 m-wide video projections.
50,000 LED roses continuing beyond the 200 m passage
Suyanggae Light Tunnel is not designed as a place where visitors simply view the underground passage and leave. The facility consists of the “Light Tunnel,” a complex multimedia space, and the “Secret Garden.” After exiting the tunnel, visitors enter an outdoor illumination area decorated with 50,000 LED roses.
In the Secret Garden, sculptures featuring couples confessing their love, ballerinas, and a giant couple ring are placed throughout the flower beds. Therefore, visitors expecting only indoor video displays may miss the outdoor garden section; conversely, those planning to see the flower sculptures at night need to enter during the darker hours.
A nighttime facility accepting visitors until 10 p.m. from April through October
According to the 2026 search information, operating hours during the summer season from April through October are 14:00–22:50, with the last admission at 22:00. During the winter season from November through March, it operates from 14:00–21:50, with the last admission at 21:00.
The weekly closing day is Tuesday. Individual admission is 9,000 won for adults and teenagers and 6,000 won for children. For groups of 20 or more, admission is 8,000 won for adults and teenagers and 5,000 won for children. Infants under 36 months enter free with proof of eligibility, while Danyang residents, people with disabilities, and national merit honorees receive discounted admission when they present identification or supporting documents.
Traveling from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Danyang Intercity Bus Terminal and Aegok
Travelers departing from Seoul can take a route via Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, arrive at Danyang Intercity Bus Terminal, and then transfer to a local bus toward Aegok in Jeokseong-myeon. The stop for getting off is Suyanggae Prehistoric Relics Exhibition Hall, and Suyanggae Light Tunnel is located at 390 Suyanggae Yujeok-ro, Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do.
As of 2026, buses from Danyang to Aegok are listed as departing from Seoul Hospital at 09:40 and from Gosu Bridge at 14:10 and 18:00. Since bus passengers get off at the “Suyanggae Prehistoric Relics Exhibition Hall” stop, it is more practical to check for the exhibition hall signs along with the destination name rather than searching only for the tunnel.
The route is arranged so that visitors see the connecting passage between the two facilities, the 200 m-long tunnel, and the Secret Garden in sequence. However, the recommended viewing time and the walking distance from the ticket office to the actual entrance were not confirmed in the available information, so it is safest not to insert an estimated travel time into your itinerary.
Why not every section can be guaranteed accessible despite a step-free entrance and elevator
