Why a paragliding site was established on 664 m Yangbangsan Mountain
Yangbangsan Mountain is 664 m above sea level and lies between Sobaeksan Mountain to the east and Woraksan Mountain to the southwest. Danyang County established an official paragliding site here in 1993. Today, the summit has five paragliding sites, a practice area, and a runway for ultralight aircraft.
Paragliding became known in Korea in the early 1980s. Yangbangsan Paragliding Site was created not only for flights by professional pilots but also for tandem experience flights for general visitors. It is also known as a venue for domestic and international competitions, including the Danyang County Governor’s National Hang Gliding and Paragliding Competition held annually.
Travel route to Yangbangsan starting from Danyang Station
First-time visitors can use Danyang Station as their starting point. According to the paragliding center, it takes 10 minutes by bus from Danyang Station. After arriving at the station, call 010-7467-9410 to use the free pickup service arranged according to your arrival time. From Danyang Bus Terminal, it is a five-minute walk or a two-minute drive.
The address is San 42-1, Gichon-ri, Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, and the Danyang County tourism board also lists the Yangbangsan Paragliding Site as 354-2, Gichon-ri, Yangbangsangil, Danyang-eup. The observatory address is 350 Yangbangsangil, Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. The paragliding center states that parking is free, but the official number of parking spaces at the site and the exact walking distance and slope to the launch area have not been made public.
No posted operating hours: call to book first
The official websites of Yangbangsan Paragliding Site and the paragliding center do not list operating hours. Official closing days have also not been confirmed, so instead of going directly to the site, it is safest to first check flight availability and the meeting point through the paragliding center’s official website https://www.paracenter.co.kr/ or by calling 010-7467-9410.
The entrance fee for the paragliding site itself has not been confirmed. According to the 2026 information, the paragliding center’s experience courses cost KRW 100,000 for the Normal Course, KRW 140,000 for the Extreme Course, KRW 140,000 for the Challenge Course, KRW 150,000 for the Couple Course, KRW 180,000 for the Special Course, and KRW 250,000 for the VIP Course. The official page states that the minimum flight time is at least five minutes and that visitors receive a 100% refund if weather conditions limit the flight to less than six minutes.
Choose between a 7-minute Normal Course and a 20-minute VIP Course
The Normal Course costs KRW 100,000 for a seven- to nine-minute flight, while the Extreme Course and Challenge Course each cost KRW 140,000 for a nine- to twelve-minute flight. Video recording is included in the Extreme and Challenge Courses. The Couple Course costs KRW 150,000 for seven to ten minutes, and the Special Course costs KRW 180,000 for twelve to seventeen minutes.
The VIP Course costs KRW 250,000 for a flight lasting approximately 20 minutes. Some Korea Tourism Organization travel articles have described experience flights as lasting 10 minutes, so the actual time in the air may vary depending on the selected course and the weather on the day. In addition to regular flights, the center also introduces art flights, which move the paraglider up, down, left, and right, and proposal flights that film a marriage proposal in the sky.
Preparation, from the flight confirmation form to knee pads
The experience is a tandem activity with a professional pilot. First, visitors receive a brief explanation and fill out a flight confirmation form, then receive a numbered ticket bearing their name. After changing into comfortable clothing and putting on knee pads, they ride a vehicle with the pilot to the summit of Yangbangsan Mountain.
At the launch area, visitors receive a second safety briefing and put on a helmet, gloves, and a harness with a backpack-style seat. The assigned pilot fastens the safety equipment personally. At takeoff, visitors lightly run until the pilot tells them to stop. According to a Korea Tourism Organization travel article, approximately 40 minutes are needed from preparation through the flight, so a schedule planned like a brief observatory visit would not be sufficient.
Skies that change with wind direction and the seasons
At Yangbangsan Mountain, the launch direction can be switched between the two sides of the site depending on the wind conditions that day. A Korea Tourism Organization travel article from June 2021 introduced Yangbangsan as a place where flights are possible approximately 300 days a year, compared with about 70 days annually at another paragliding site. It also explained that days with heavy rain and sudden weather changes are uncommon.
Nevertheless, flights are affected by weather conditions, so safety judgments take priority over the scheduled course duration. The paragliding center states that flights launch from approximately 664 m at Yangbangsan and can be enjoyed at an altitude more than 100 m higher than at other paragliding sites. The official website introduces spring cherry blossoms, summer greenery, autumn foliage, and winter snow-covered scenery.
You cannot enter the observatory, but you can view the Namhangang River from the terrace
Yangbangsan Observatory is a circular structure built at the 664 m summit of Yangbangsan Mountain. Its exterior, visible from all directions, resembles a spacecraft, but visitors cannot enter the building. Rather than expecting an observation room inside, visitors should understand it as a place to enjoy the scenery from a small nearby terrace and surrounding open spaces.
From the terrace, visitors can see the sunset and a panoramic view of the Namhangang River. Around Yangbangsan, the Namhangang River and downtown Danyang can be viewed at a glance. At the time of a 2020 report, the paragliding landing area was introduced as the riverside parking lot beside the Danyang-eup waterfront stage, so itinerary planning should also account for the landing point being on the town side after takeoff from the summit.
Accessibility limitations wheelchair and stroller users should know first
Yangbangsan Observatory has no accessible restroom or elevator, and there are no designated accessible parking spaces. The main entrance has a step, and wheelchair and stroller rental services are not available. Since the interior of the observatory itself is not open to visitors, travelers who use mobility aids should check in advance how much assistance companions can provide and how close vehicles can approach.
Publicly available information does not confirm whether photography is prohibited, whether payment is cash-only, or whether English guidance or an audio guide is available. It also does not specify the criteria for completely restricting access during severe weather. Therefore, foreign visitors should not assume that English explanations will be available on site; it is more practical to inquire in advance about reservations, pickup, courses, and video availability by calling 010-7467-9410.
