42 Cultural Heritage Sites of Cheongpung Relocated Beside the Waters of Cheongpung Lake
Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex is a historical site created by relocating and restoring cultural properties that would have been submerged by the construction of the Chungju Multipurpose Dam over three years beginning in 1983. It takes about one hour by city bus from Jecheon Station or Jecheon Bus Terminal, and about 60–90 minutes to tour Hanbyeokru Pavilion, the Stone Standing Buddha, government offices, and traditional homes.

Why It Was Moved from the Chungju Dam Submerged Area to the Cheongpung Lakeside
Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex is a site where cultural properties threatened with submersion due to the construction of Chungju Multipurpose Dam were gathered in one place, relocated, and restored. Construction of Chungju Multipurpose Dam began in 1978, and Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Government relocated and restored the cultural properties of the submerged areas to their current locations according to their original forms over three years beginning in 1983.
Cheongpung Lake, which spreads around the complex today, was also formed as a result of the construction of Chungju Dam. Approximately 50% of the total submerged area was located in the Jecheon region, and the Cheongpung Lake area is introduced as one of the most scenic sections among the roughly 130-ri waterways created by Chungju Dam.
43 Cultural Properties and More Than 2,000 Everyday Artifacts: What to See
The complex includes a Confucian school, government offices, traditional private homes, and groups of stone objects. Other public tourism information presents the relocated cultural properties as numbering 43. Jecheon City's official information explains that two Treasures, nine provincial tangible cultural properties, dolmens, civil official stone statues, steles, and other items totaling 42 properties, along with more than 2,000 everyday artifacts, were relocated and restored according to their original forms.
More than 1,600 household items are displayed inside four traditional homes. Therefore, rather than being a place to quickly photograph only the exteriors of the buildings, this site is best experienced by comparing the government-office spaces with traces of everyday life inside the private homes.
Why Hanbyeongnu Pavilion Overlooks Cheongpung Lake Since 1317
Hanbyeongnu Pavilion is an auxiliary building of the government offices built to commemorate 1317, the fourth year of the reign of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, when Cheongpung-hyeon was elevated to county status. It is introduced as Treasure No. 528 and features four bays across the front, three bays along the side, a hipped-and-gabled roof, and a bracket style supported by columns.
Hanbyeongnu Pavilion collapsed in the great flood of 1972 but was restored in 1975 according to its original style. A stepped wing corridor with three bays across the front and one bay along the side is attached on the right. From the raised floor, visitors can see Chungju Lake at a glance, making it a good place to understand both the complex's history and the landscape formed after the area was submerged.
Eungcheonggak's 1983 Relocation and a 1637 Lodging Record
Eungcheonggak originally stood at 203-1, Eup-ri, Cheongpung-myeon, but it was relocated and restored at its current site in 1983 because of the construction of Chungju Dam. The lower level is enclosed by an earth-and-stone wall, while the upper level is a two-story pavilion with a hipped-and-gabled roof, measuring three bays across the front and two bays along the side.
Public tourism information introduces the name Eungcheonggak as having been given by Yi Hwang and explains that the diary of Jeong Se-gyu, the Chungcheong governor, records that he lodged here in 1637, the 15th year of King Injo's reign. In 1900, the 37th year of King Gojong's reign, Magistrate Hyeon In-bok renovated the building. After reading about its name and historical records, examining the lower level and pavilion structure separately reveals the character of government-office architecture, which differs from an ordinary old house.
How to Travel from Jecheon Station, Passing 37 Stops
If departing from Seoul Station, travel to Jecheon Station, then go to the Namdang Elementary School Front–Jecheon Station bus stop, a seven-minute walk from the station. Take bus 950, 952, 953, 960, 961, 970, 971, 980, or 982, travel for 37 stops and approximately 55 minutes, and get off at the Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex stop.
The walk from the bus stop to the complex is indicated as four minutes. If using Seoul Express Bus Terminal, get off at Jecheon Bus Terminal, then walk five minutes to the Intercity Bus Terminal–Woori Bank stop and take a bus from the same group of routes. This journey takes 42 stops and approximately 1 hour 2 minutes. Since the service interval is not provided in the guide materials, travelers relying solely on buses should consider waiting time before transfer time.
Pay Admission from 09:00 and Explore for 60–90 Minutes
Operating hours are 09:00–18:00 from March through October and 09:00–17:00 from November through February. Admission closes one hour before closing time. The complex is open year-round. Individual admission is 3,000 won for adults, 2,000 won for teenagers (middle and high school students) and soldiers, and 1,000 won for children.
Groups of 30 or more pay 2,500 won for adults, 1,500 won for teenagers and soldiers, and 800 won for children. Children below elementary school age, people aged 65 or older, people with disabilities, and national merit honorees receive free admission. People with Grade 1, 2, or 3 disabilities may bring one accompanying person free of charge. On the last Wednesday of each month, designated Culture Day, general visitors and groups receive a 50% discount. Based on visitor reviews, the recommended visit takes approximately 60–90 minutes, so in winter it is safer to aim to enter before 16:00.
Free Parking, Sloped Hills, and Difficult Areas to Navigate
Parking is free. According to official information, wheelchair access and wheelchair rentals are available, but the sloped sections require assistance from a companion. Visitors expecting only flat, museum-style exhibitions may find the site more challenging to navigate than anticipated.

Jecheon tourism information introduces Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex as “a small folk village by Cheongpung Lake.” Nearby attractions include Bibongsan Mountain, Gudambong Peak, Oksunbong Peak, Neunggang Gugok Valley, Geumsusan Mountain, the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, Woraksan National Park, and Suanbo Hot Springs.
However, the guide materials do not provide exact public transportation times to each destination. For bus travelers, rather than making a day plan that involves spending about 60–90 minutes at Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex and then moving to the next destination, it is more realistic to calculate the return time to Jecheon Station or Jecheon Bus Terminal first. Drivers can approach from Cheongju via National Route 36, Jungbu-ro, Chungmin-ro, Jungwon-daero, Worak-ro, and Cheongpung Lake-ro.
