Jecheon's Aerial Route Across Cheongpung Lake: 10 Minutes to the 531 m Summit of Bibongsan Mountain

10 minutes connecting Multeri Station and Bibongsan Station over 2.3 km

Cheongpung Lake Cable Car is a round-trip cable car located at 166 Munhwajae-gil, Cheongpung-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. The route from the lower Multeri Station to the upper Bibongsan Station is 2.3 km long, with an average operating speed of 5 m per second and a one-way ride time of approximately 10 minutes. Bibongsan, where the summit station is located, rises 531 m above sea level.

The facility officially opened in March 2019. At the time, a total of 43 ten-person cabins were introduced, including 33 standard cabins and 10 crystal cabins with partially transparent floors. Because the cable car connects the surface of Cheongpung Lake and the mountain slopes from above, it is also a practical option for children and older visitors who do not wish to hike to the summit.

The name “Bibongsan” and the lakeside landscape shaped by Cheongpung Lake

The name Bibongsan comes from the explanation that the shape of the mountain at the summit resembles a phoenix holding an egg and taking flight in search of food. The upper cable car station sits at the summit, providing a location where the lake, mountain ridges, and winding shoreline can be viewed together in a single panorama.

Cheongpung Lake is the name used for the Jecheon section of the Chungju Lake water system, which was formed by the construction of Chungju Dam. Thus, the broad waterway and the islands and mountain slopes along its shores show not only the appearance of a natural lake but also the changed terrain and history of life in the Namhan River basin following the construction of Chungju Dam in the 1980s. The flooding that led to the relocation and preservation of cultural heritage from the Cheongpung-myeon area at Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex is also connected to this history.

09:30 departure and 18:00 ticketing cutoff: why checking the weather on the day matters

The Korea Tourism Organization’s barrier-free tourism information, updated in August 2025, lists operating hours as 09:30–18:30, with ticket sales ending at 18:00. Although the facility is listed as open year-round, monthly operating hours and closure dates may change, so it is advisable to check the official website or call 043-643-7301 on the morning of your visit.

The cable car may temporarily stop operating if weather conditions deteriorate. On days when winds blow between the lake and the mountains, or when rain or lightning is forecast, it is better not to base your entire itinerary on boarding after arriving at the site. The official website is https://www.cheongpungcablecar.com/.

Check the official notice again before boarding for standard and crystal cabin fares

The Korea Tourism Organization’s July 2022 information listed round-trip standard cabin fares as KRW 18,000 for adults and KRW 14,000 for children, and crystal cabin fares as KRW 23,000 for adults and KRW 18,000 for children. Standard and crystal cabins have different floor designs, so visitors who are afraid of heights or uncomfortable with a transparent floor may find a standard cabin more suitable.

However, the notice stated that these fares could change after the time of publication. This article does not treat the old fares as the current confirmed prices. Before visiting, check the official booking and fare page for round-trip tickets, discount eligibility, package products, and on-site or online sales conditions before making payment.

Lower station equipped with accessible parking, ramps, and wheelchair rentals

The lower station has accessible parking, and a ramp to the main entrance is provided, allowing wheelchair access. Inside the building, there are an elevator, an accessible restroom, and Braille information boards, and wheelchairs can also be rented. Visitors with strollers or wheelchairs can ask staff about the ticketing and boarding route upon arrival to minimize unnecessary movement.

A nursing room for visitors with infants and young children is located on the second floor of the lower station. Recent visitor information states that Parking Lots 1, 2, and 3 are free, although parking locations may differ during peak seasons and on weekends. In particular, Parking Lot 2 is reportedly about 400 m from Parking Lot 1, so if someone in your group has difficulty walking, it is better to decide on a drop-off point before parking.

  • Accessible parking: Available
  • Entrance ramp: Available
  • Elevator and accessible restroom: Available
  • Wheelchair rental: Available
  • Braille information board: Available
  • Nursing room: Second floor of the lower station
  • General parking: Parking Lots 1, 2, and 3 listed as free

A half-day itinerary combined with Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex

The lower cable car station is in the Multeri area of Cheongpung-myeon, the same area as Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex. The complex was created by relocating cultural heritage from areas that were submerged following the construction of Chungju Dam. For this reason, it pairs well with a visit to the summit lake viewpoint, allowing visitors to continue exploring the changes in lakeside villages and the context of heritage relocation.

If you use only the cable car, allow about 1 to 1.5 hours, including approximately 20 minutes for the round trip and time spent at the upper station. Allow 2 hours to see the summit views and surrounding facilities; adding Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex makes a half-day itinerary more comfortable. Visitor reviews suggest that the first operating period in the morning or the later afternoon is relatively less crowded on clear days, but waiting times vary depending on weekends, holidays, and group visits.

Decide on four things before boarding rather than simply visiting the upper station and returning

First, decide which boarding environment is more comfortable: a standard cabin or a crystal cabin. Second, plan your travel time so that you arrive at the lower station before the 18:00 ticketing cutoff. Third, if strong winds or rain are forecast, call 043-643-7301 to confirm whether services will operate that day. Fourth, if you are traveling with a person with a disability, an infant, or someone with difficulty walking, make use of the lower station’s ramp and wheelchair rental service.

By public transportation, the usual method is to take a local bus toward Cheongpung from downtown Jecheon or Jecheon Bus Terminal and then continue from a stop in the Cheongpung area. However, walking distances from each stop and routes and timetables may change frequently. Because this site is in a mountainous lakeside area, a rental car or private vehicle is generally more convenient for planning an itinerary. Bus users should separately check Jecheon City bus service information and connection times before departure.

Candidate scenes of Cheongpung Lake Cable Car in eight photos

The photos below were selected from image URLs provided by different sources, including official tourism pages and visitor reviews of Cheongpung Lake Cable Car. Only candidates that could be identified in context as scenes related to the cable car, Bibongsan, or Cheongpung Lake were chosen. When the original photo descriptions did not provide enough detail, the scenes were labeled only at the level of the place name.

The photos may differ from current conditions depending on the season, weather, and time of shooting. On the actual day of your visit, check the operating status, visibility, and availability of facilities at the upper station again through official channels.
