Best Time to Visit

You can visit the columnar jointing cliffs year-round, but the best seasons are spring and autumn. During these seasons, the weather is relatively mild and the sea breeze is less burdensome than in midsummer or midwinter, making it easier to walk around.

Within the day, early morning or late afternoon is best. The usual operating hours are from 09:00 to 17:50, and last admission is at 17:30. Since the viewing area is not very long, 30 minutes to 1 hour is enough for a relaxed visit, so a morning visit is the most convenient option.

If you want to avoid crowds, a weekday visit is recommended. Weekends and public holidays tend to be busier, while weekday mornings are the quietest. In particular, from around lunchtime to early afternoon, the number of visitors can increase, so it may be a bit more crowded.

In short, the best visiting conditions are a weekday morning in spring or autumn. It is less crowded and easier to get around, making it the most practical choice for international travelers.

How Long to Stay

The columnar jointing cliffs are easy to reach from the entrance to the viewing area, so if you move quickly, a round trip of 20 to 30 minutes is enough. Usually, including photo stops and a walk along the coast, people stay for about 40 to 60 minutes. If you plan to also visit Jungmun Coast or nearby attractions, allowing 1.5 to 3 hours is practical.

After getting off at the Jeju International Convention Center & Jungmun Daepo Coast Jusangjeolli Cliff [South] stop, follow the signs and walk to the entrance of the columnar jointing cliffs. Walking is possible, but comfortable shoes are recommended.

Photo Spots

  • Beach photo zone: This is the main shooting spot where you can capture the columnar jointing cliffs up close. At the designated photo spot, stand facing the sea and take photos so that the rocks and waves appear together. It is good to shoot continuous frames or slow-motion video of the moment the waves crash. The best time is during the day, when the texture and color of the waves stand out.
  • Close-up composition of the columnar jointing cliffs: Around the beach photo zone, try framing the smaller columnar joints large in the foreground. Keep the camera pointed toward the sea and the cliffs, and wait for the moment when the waves touch the rocks. From late morning to early afternoon, when there is enough sunlight, is ideal for clear photos.
  • Memorable photo point: At the marked photo zone, it is a good place to take portrait photos with the cliffs and sea in the background. If you face your body toward the sea or at a diagonal instead of toward the land, the background will appear wider. Bright, clean photos turn out well in the morning or early afternoon.

Night View

The columnar jointing cliffs themselves are a nature-focused attraction, and at night the surrounding coast and walking paths offer a calmer, more romantic atmosphere. Rather than strong lighting, the gentle nighttime illumination and sea breeze combine to create a peaceful place to enjoy the scenery.

The recommended time is from just after sunset until around 9 to 10 p.m. If it gets too late, the surrounding area may become dark, so visiting in the early evening after sunset is most convenient.

At night, the lit coastal walk, the sound of the sea, and the cool breeze are the main attractions. For photography, it is even better to include illuminated sections or nearby night spots with photo zones in your itinerary.

There is limited information about major night festivals dedicated specifically to the columnar jointing cliffs, so before visiting, it is recommended to check seasonal night openings as well as nearby light festivals and night event schedules.

Seasonal Guide

Spring (March to May)
This is a great season to visit the columnar jointing cliffs. From late March to early April, Jeju offers a combination of royal cherry blossoms and canola flowers, making it easy to pair the cliffs with flower attractions for a one-day course. There may be some wind, so bring a light outer layer.

Summer (June to August)
This is the time when the black basalt cliffs of the columnar jointing formation stand out most clearly against the blue sea. It is ideal for combining coastal scenery with nearby beach plans. The sun is strong, so be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, and water. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon is more comfortable than at midday.

Autumn (September to November)
Thanks to the cool weather, this is the most comfortable season for coastal walks and enjoying the views. In Jeju, you can also enjoy silver grass and autumn foliage, making it a great fit for nature-focused travel. It is also an excellent season for photography.

Winter (December to February)
You can visit during Jeju's relatively mild winter, and it is great to combine the trip with camellia flowers and snowy views of Hallasan. The sea breeze can be strong, so the perceived temperature may be low, and a windproof jacket is recommended. On clear days, the contrast between the rough winter sea and the columnar joints is especially impressive.

Tip: The columnar jointing cliffs are worth seeing in every season, but spring is best if you want flowers too, summer for refreshing sea scenery, autumn for comfortable walking weather, and winter for dramatic coastal scenery.
