Aramaru Observatory with the Ara Waterway Flowing Beneath Its Glass Floor

A 46 m-diameter circular observatory above Gyeyangsan Gorge
Aramaru Observatory is located at 79-4 Duksil-dong, Gyeyang-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City, and its road-name address is 228 Ara-ro, Gyeyang-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City. Positioned in the highest section of Gyeyangsan Gorge along the Gyeongin Ara Waterway, it overlooks Korea’s first and only inland canal connecting the waters off Incheon with the Han River.
The observatory is circular, with a diameter of approximately 46 m. Its railings and floor are made of glass, and the floor’s triple-layer reinforced-glass structure allows visitors to see the scenery below. It is an auxiliary facility along the Gyeongin Ara Waterway managed by Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water), and is introduced as the fourth of the eight scenic highlights along the waterway.
Why the complete replacement in 2015 created today’s clear views
Aramaru Observatory is located in the Gyeyangsan Gorge section of the Gyeongin Ara Waterway, allowing visitors to see the waterway and the mountain’s contours at once. The facilities were completely replaced in 2015 to improve safety and were renovated so visitors could look out over the Ara Waterway without obstructed views.
The Gyeongin Ara Waterway visible from here is a canal more than 6 m deep. Visitors must not cross the waterside safety fence, and fishing, cooking, and camping are prohibited. Violations are subject to fines under the River Act.
Bus Gyeyang 2 arrives one minute after the stop
By public transportation, visitors can take Bus Gyeyang 2, get off at the “Duksil-dong (Aramaru Observatory)” stop, and walk for one minute. Another option is to take Bus 583 or 9701, get off at “Moksang Intersection,” and walk for approximately 15 minutes.
Official transportation information for Ara Falls states that it is a 45-minute walk from Exit 3 of Geomam Station. Therefore, if starting from Geomam Station, taking a bus-stop route is more practical than choosing a long walk just to visit the observatory.
Free admission from 09:00 to 22:00; there is no ticket office
Aramaru Observatory’s operating hours are listed as 09:00–22:00, and admission is described as free. It is introduced as open year-round, although access may be restricted during severe weather.
As this is not a tourist attraction requiring passage through a paid ticket office, there is no need to prepare an admission ticket. The main inquiry telephone number is the Ara General Information Center at 1899-3650, and the official website is the Korea Water Resources Corporation Gyeongin Ara Waterway site. No separate seasonal operating schedule for the observatory itself has been confirmed.
About five minutes from the parking lot; 30 minutes to one hour for viewing
The parking lot near the observatory is described as free, and visitor reviews state that it takes approximately five minutes to walk from the parking lot to the observatory. However, the number of available spaces and parking bays has not been confirmed, so it is safer not to assume that parking will be available for large vehicles or during busy periods.
Based on visitor reviews, the recommended viewing time at Aramaru Observatory is approximately 30 minutes to one hour. A brief visit to the observatory alone can be planned for around 30 minutes, while combining photography with a walk to Ara Falls makes a one-hour itinerary suitable.
The 150 m section of Ara Falls operates from April through November
Near the observatory is Ara Falls, an artificial waterfall 150 m wide that uses the terrain of Gyeyangsan Gorge to create a vertical landscape. The waterside walking path at Ara Falls leads to the waterfall by stairs, offering a closer view of the gorge in a way that differs from the observatory’s broad, level outlook.
Ara Falls operates from April through November, and operations are suspended during winter when temperatures are 0°C or below. The waterfall is managed through disinfection and regular water-quality inspections, while lights on the observatory’s railings and floor illuminate the nighttime scenery.
Notes for people uncomfortable with glass floors and visitors using mobility devices
The glass floor can be slippery, so caution is necessary, and visitors should not run or play inside the observatory. People with a fear of heights or weak hearts may find the glass floor and open view below unsettling, so choosing a safer route rather than walking along the edge of the circular deck is recommended.
There is also guidance stating that people may pass beneath the observatory. Bicycles, kick scooters, electric wheels, and other mobility devices are strictly restricted from entering the observatory area, so sightseeing on foot is the rule. An elevator is available from ground level to the observatory, and the wooden deck leading to the observatory has a gentle slope and is described as wheelchair accessible.
Which is better: daytime or nighttime?
During the day, it is easier to distinguish the structure of Gyeyangsan Gorge and the Gyeongin Ara Waterway, and the clear views secured after the complete replacement in 2015 can be enjoyed. If you plan to visit Ara Falls as well, come between April and November, the waterfall’s operating period, and include the stairs leading to the waterfall in your itinerary.
At night, the railings and floor lights turn on, making the glass structure look different from during the day. However, the observatory operates only until 22:00 and access may be restricted during severe weather, so nighttime visitors should consider both the return schedule of Bus Gyeyang 2 and safety conditions on site. Whether English signs and audio guides are available, whether photography is prohibited, and whether payment is cash-only have not been confirmed.
