Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill is a colony of royal azaleas established in the center of Sanbon New Town. Gunpo City describes it as a 25,000㎡ shelter and explains that royal azalea varieties have been planted every year since 1999, with more than 200,000 plants now growing there.
Korea Tourism information lists a different size of 20,000㎡ and approximately 150,000 plants, introducing the site as a place planted with Jasan-hong, Yeongsan-hong, Korean azaleas, and white azaleas. Since the area and planting figures vary by source, visitors are better off understanding the site by its actual layout: a broad flower field and a small artificial hill connected to the Surisan hiking trail, rather than focusing on the numbers.
See the flower fields and Royal Azalea Waterfall together from late April to early May
Royal azaleas are said to reach full bloom from late April to early May each year. During this period, visitors can explore not only Royal Azalea Hill but also the adjacent Royal Azalea Park, which has landscaped flower paths, a lawn plaza, and exercise facilities.
Royal Azalea Waterfall at the entrance was built on a site of approximately 400 pyeong, measuring 40 m long and 20 m wide, with one main waterfall and two auxiliary waterfalls. It also has stream features, lighting, topiary, and rest areas, making it a good place to stop before or after entering the flower fields; however, the waterfall lighting hours have not been separately announced.
The entrance is 10 minutes from Exit 1 of Surisan Station
When arriving by subway from Seoul or the surrounding metropolitan area, Exit 1 of Surisan Station on Line 4 is described as the shortest access route. It takes about 10 minutes on foot from the exit to Royal Azalea Hill, while Exit 2 of Sanbon Station on Line 4 is about a 15-minute walk away.
From Geumjeong Station, visitors can take buses 5623, 11-5, 917, or 541. Get off at the Royal Azalea Hill (Royal Azalea Park) stop, and Royal Azalea Park is about a one-minute walk away. Since bus intervals and real-time service information were not included in the available guidance, the Surisan Station subway route is simpler for first-time foreign visitors.
Open year-round and free, but consider parking first during festival season
According to the 2026 guidance, the site is open at all times and has no closing days throughout the year. Admission is also free, so there is no need to buy a ticket or prepare cash at a ticket office. Tourism data lists parking capacity as 260 vehicles, but parking fees and parking-lot operating hours could not be confirmed. Since reviews report congestion at the underground public parking lot and Chorok Parking Lot during the festival period, from late April to early May it is safer to prioritize walking access from Surisan Station over driving.
About a one-hour course: do not stop at the flower fields—continue to Royal Azalea Park
Visitor reviews recommend allowing roughly one hour because the site is extensive. After walking around Royal Azalea Hill, visitors can move to the adjacent Royal Azalea Park and see the landscaped flower paths, lawn plaza, and exercise facilities during the same visit.
The hill connects to the Surisan hiking trail, but visitors who only want to see the flowers are not required to go hiking. An outdoor stage and fountain are also installed, and music performances, exhibitions, and hands-on events linked with Yangji Park have been held during the full-bloom period. Event schedules and visitor routes may vary from year to year.
Entrance information that is easy to miss on a first visit
This is not a paid indoor exhibition hall but an outdoor hill open at all times, so there is no separate ticketing procedure. The listed public convenience facility is a restroom, and stroller rental is reportedly unavailable.
It has not been confirmed whether wheelchairs and strollers can pass through all sloped and stair sections, whether there are photography-prohibited areas, or whether English guidance or an audio guide is available. Visitors using mobility aids should therefore avoid assuming that the entire flower field can be accessed in the same way. No separate photography restrictions have been announced, but visitors should follow on-site signs in event or facility operating areas.
A walk from 451 Gosan-ro to the scenery beneath Surisan
The address is 451 Gosan-ro, Gunpo-si, Gyeonggi-do (Sanbon-dong), and the lot number is 1152-14 Sanbon-dong, Gunpo-si, Gyeonggi-do. Tourism data lists the area as 55,795 and the capacity as 50,000 people. The designation date is May 12, 2021, and the managing organization is recorded as Gunpo City Hall, Gyeonggi-do.
Its location in the city while connecting to the hiking trails beneath Surisan explains the site’s present character. Because a large royal azalea complex was created near the residential areas of Sanbon New Town, it can be reached on foot from the subway station, while Royal Azalea Park, Yangji Park, and the outdoor stage serve both flower viewing and civic recreation. During the peak blooming season, broadcasts and cultural events are added, creating a setting that draws more visitors.
