“I’ll drink coffee with Jennie” — a YouTuber who blindly went looking for her agency… and in the end, bowed his head
[SBS Entertainment News | Reporter Kang Seon-ae] YouTuber Potato Turtle (real name Song Ji-yoon), who had been at the center of controversy over being a "sasaeng fan" after posting a video of herself randomly going to the office building of the independent agency to meet BLACKPINK's Jennie, has eventually apologized. On the 14th, Potato Turtle posted an apology on her SNS, saying, "I sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable because of the video I recently posted," adding, "I have been reading each and every comment left for me and deeply reflecting on my thoughtless actions."
Regarding the intended concept behind the controversial content, Potato Turtle said, "I am currently taking on 100 bucket list challenges," adding, "Among them are relatively easy challenges, such as 'seeing the aurora in Iceland,' but there are also realistically difficult challenges, such as 'having a cup of coffee with Jennie.'"
She explained, "I wanted to challenge something that seemed impossible. I wanted to knock on the door and find my own path," adding, "Of course, I did not actually think that going to the company or attending a performance would let me drink coffee with Jennie noona."
Regarding the background behind the excessive staging, she lowered her head and said, "When making videos, I often refer to overseas content. Since there are often contents abroad that shout out celebrities, I made the video because I wanted to convey my sincerity as well," adding, "However, my thinking was short. I sincerely apologize for making many people uncomfortable."
Previously, Potato Turtle stirred controversy by uploading a video to her channel showing her directly visiting the OA Entertainment office building, Jennie's one-person agency, saying she would fulfill one of her bucket list items, 'having a cup of coffee with Jennie.' In the video, she repeatedly rang the doorbell at the company's entrance without warning and handed over a letter and bouquet of flowers, and she was also seen visiting Jennie's concert venue and standing with a sign that read, 'Jennie noona, want to have a cup of coffee?'
After the video was released, many netizens strongly criticized her, saying that going to a private space without prior arrangement could threaten the artist and was no different from the behavior of a "sasaeng fan." As the controversy grew, Potato Turtle immediately made the video private and posted an apology to calm the situation.
Potato Turtle apologized, saying, "I did not realize that randomly going to the company and delivering a letter and bouquet of flowers could be seen as sasaeng behavior. My intention was to deliver the letter and make a video of the process to convey my sincerity, but that method was wrong," adding, "I think I was too ignorant about idol fan culture. I will act more carefully from now on. I am sorry."
She also apologized for the action of holding a sign at the concert venue, saying, "Since it was the first concert I had ever been to in my life, I lacked understanding of concert culture. I sincerely apologize for holding a sign at the concert venue. From now on, I will follow concert etiquette and not repeat such mistakes."
However, Potato Turtle drew a line on claims that her actions were purely planned to increase views. She emphasized, "The claim that I used Jennie noona for content is absolutely not true," adding, "I simply wanted to convey my sincerity as one fan who likes Jennie noona. I hope my sincerity will not be overshadowed by my thoughtless actions that were lacking."
