Semiwon Lotus Festival

Semiwon, the "garden of water and flowers" embraced on three sides by Paldang Lake

After getting off at Yangsu Station and walking for about 15 minutes, I kept thinking, did such a landscape really hide so close to Seoul? Semiwon is a aquatic plant garden next to Dumulmeori, where the Bukhangang River and the Namhangang River meet, with Paldang Lake wrapping around it on three sides. In summer, lotuses bloom all over this outdoor garden, and the variety is truly impressive: vivid red lotuses, elegant white lotuses, Perry's Lotus developed and donated by the world-renowned lotus researcher Perry Slocum, and even Victoria water lilies with leaves large enough for a person to stand on. Semiwon is a garden with about 270 plant species, and it was also designated in June 2019 as Gyeonggi Province's first local garden.

The 2025 Lotus Culture Festival I visited ran from June 27 to August 10, with the theme "Lotus, held in my heart." It was meant to encourage visitors to leave the city behind and slowly walk through the peaceful garden like water droplets resting on lotus leaves, reflecting on themselves. In fact, as you walk along the wooden deck paths between the ponds, you begin to understand what that means. Lotus flowers open most beautifully in the early morning and around sunset, so I planned to enter late in the afternoon and stay until evening.

A half-day route on foot from Yangsu Station Exit 4

The most reliable way to get there is via the Gyeongui-Jungang Line at Yangsu Station. I took the Jungang Line from Cheongnyangni to Yangsu Station, and it is about a 15-minute walk from the station to Semiwon. You can simply follow the main road, but the signposts are a little lacking, so if it is your first visit, I recommend keeping a map app open. If you are driving, just search for "Semiwon" in your navigation app; there is a dedicated parking lot. However, the parking lot gets crowded on weekends and during the festival period, so it is more comfortable to go early if possible.

Admission is 7,000 won for adults, and the interesting part is that you receive a 2,000-won Yangpyeong Love Gift Certificate upon entry. In effect, the actual cost is 5,000 won, so you can use the certificate at a cafe or the lotus bread shop. Children, teenagers, seniors aged 65 and above, people with mild disabilities, and groups of 30 or more pay 4,000 won (with a 1,000-won gift certificate), while toddlers aged 5 and under, Yangpyeong County residents, one ticket per person, the person with a severe disability and one caregiver, people of national merit and their spouses, and active-duty soldiers are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth, and card payments are available these days, so there is no major concern if you do not have cash.

Inside the garden, there is Cafe Yeon, the Semiwon Lotus Bread Shop, and the Art Shop Semi, so it is a good place to rest while walking. However, these retail and cafe facilities tend to close earlier than the garden's operating hours, so if you want souvenirs or lotus bread, it is best to stop by before it gets too late. During the festival period, it was open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with last admission at 7:30 p.m., and there was no closing day.

From the lotus museum to hands-on classes, there is more to see than you might expect

Semiwon is not just a place to look at flowers. On the second and third floors of the Lotus Museum, exhibits of artifacts and artworks themed around lotus flowers are held, and curated exhibitions are also regularly on view at Gallery Semi. Outdoors, there are many attractions such as Guksawon, which has a pond shaped like the Korean Peninsula and planted with white water lilies, the jar fountain, and Sehanjeong, making it a pleasant place to stroll around and take photos. This area is also a historic site where Jeong Yak-yong, a late Joseon-era practical scholar, once built a floating bridge on the Namhangang River.

The hands-on programs were also quite diverse. One-day classes such as medical aromatherapy, lotus leaf tea making, and nail art were offered, and during the festival period there was also an always-available experience package that anyone could join freely under the elevated bridge. There were also activities such as dyeing handkerchiefs with lotus leaves and making lotus fans, so if you are visiting with children, you can especially have a fulfilling time. There is also a guided program with a cultural tourism interpreter who explains Semiwon's history and the stories of lotus flowers, and if you make a reservation in advance, you can explore in much greater depth.

The signs and exhibition explanations are basically centered on Korean, so foreign visitors may find it difficult to understand every detail. Still, the core experience here is simply walking and looking at flowers and water, so there is little barrier to enjoying the garden itself even without understanding the language. For any exhibition explanations you are curious about, using a translation app alongside them was enough.

Practical tips to know before you go

Getting the blooming season right is the key for lotus flowers. White lotuses, red lotuses, and Perry's Lotus generally bloom from late June to early August, Victoria water lilies from July to August, and tropical water lilies from July into autumn. Peak bloom is usually from mid-July to early or mid-August, so if you want the most spectacular scenery, aim for that period. Semiwon updates the daily blooming status on its website, so checking once before departure can help you avoid a wasted trip.

• Lotuses open beautifully in the morning and evening. Rather than the harsh midday sun, early morning or sunset is better for photos and for feeling the heat less intensely.
• Since it is an outdoor garden, there is not much shade. Bring a hat, parasol, water, and sunscreen, and comfortable shoes are best because there is a lot of walking on deck paths.
• Visiting is possible even in a passing shower or light rain, and the lotus garden in the rain can actually feel more atmospheric. However, if it rains heavily, admission may be restricted, so check the official channels.
• There is also a city bus connecting Yangsu Station and Semiwon, but weekend intervals are very sparse, so walking for 15 minutes is often more convenient than taking the bus.

For the return trip, just take the Gyeongui-Jungang Line again from Yangsu Station. If you plan to stay until 8:00 p.m., check the Seoul-bound train schedule in advance. Late at night, the intervals between trains become longer, so it is best to plan your time so you can still walk back to the station at a relaxed pace after seeing the final lotus night view.

The Semiwon Lotus Culture Festival is especially well suited for people who want a half-day healing outing near Seoul and for those who prefer quiet walks and photography over crowded festivals. It is even better if you combine it with Dumulmeori for a full-day itinerary.
