When the lights come on at the thousand-year-old government office — Gangneung's summer night awakens

If you think of Gangneung only as midday beaches and coffee, the three days in August show a completely different face. When the sun goes down and the lights turn on at Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office, the old grounds where officials stayed from the Goryeo period through the Joseon period transform into a stage. Even when I visited, the dimming courtyard was packed with people. This event is the Gangneung National Heritage Night Walk. Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office, Seobu Market, and the Myeongju-dong area serve as the stage for three evenings in mid-August, and anyone can stroll through the alleys and enjoy it without an admission fee.

Hosted jointly by the National Heritage Administration, Gangwon State, and Gangneung City, this night event began in 2016 and has continued every year since. It is organized around eight night-themed programs (night scenery, night routes, night stories, night paintings, night tales, night food, night lodging, and night markets), but despite the grand names, it is really a very straightforward evening outing: 'tour the government office, watch performances, wear hanbok, and eat snacks at the market.' With the theme 'A Thousand Years of Government Office Holding Gangneung, Gangneung Daedohobu', it has become a night festival linking the city center and the alleys.

A foreign traveler's day: from Gangneung Station to the night alleys

Let's start with the most reassuring part. There is no separate admission ticket for this event, and you do not have to line up on-site to buy one. You simply go at the scheduled time and walk around. However, hanbok rentals and some hands-on experiences or performances may have limited spaces, so if there is a program you definitely want to do, it is a good idea to check the official page in advance for the operating hours on that day.

If you are coming from Seoul, the easiest way is to take the KTX to Gangneung Station. The venue, Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office (Imyeonggwan), is close to Gangneung Station by car and is in the old downtown area, so a taxi gets you there quickly. There are several city bus stops in front of Gangneung Station, but the routes can be a bit complicated depending on direction, so if you have luggage, a taxi will be more comfortable. Real-time buses are easy to check on KakaoMap and Naver Map, so finding your way is not difficult.

Once you arrive, around 6 p.m. the government office courtyard and the Myeongju-dong alleys begin to come alive. The highlight on the first day was the Gangneung Daedohobusa appointment parade marking the opening, and the Colorful Moonlight Hanbok Fashion Show, in which Gangneung residents themselves appear as models, as well as performances gathering Gangneung's intangible cultural heritage, continued one after another. There are also many hands-on corners, such as making a Joseon-era household plaque yourself, so even if you do not know Korean, it is easy to follow along and enjoy by watching and imitating.

And the highlight of this night is the drone show. Under the name 'Drone, Drawing Gangneung's National Heritage', it depicts the life of Yulgok Yi I in the night sky, with 1,000 drones taking off. I saw it start around 9:30 p.m., and when the light changed into letters and images beyond the government office eaves, gasps broke out around me. Since the crowd surges as the drone show time approaches, if you want to watch from a good spot, I recommend arriving about 30 minutes early to secure a place.

When heading back, make sure to plan your route in advance since it gets late. Around Gangneung Station, the atmosphere leans more toward taking a taxi or bus than walking at night, so calling a taxi app in advance around the time the drone show ends can save you unnecessary hassle. Check the last KTX train time in advance, and if your schedule is tight, staying overnight in Gangneung and seeing the sea the next day makes for a much more relaxed trip.

Things to know before you go so you won't get lost

The food is the real fun of this night walk. In the Myeongju-dong alleys, there are corners full of neighborhood charm, such as 'A bundle of stories told by grandma' and the 'Myeongju-dong gaemak (store beer) program', and the alleys are filled with local food stalls made from Gangneung's agricultural and livestock products, experience zones for traditional liquor and craft beer linked with local breweries, and even a free market run by merchants from Gangneung Seongnam Market. However, markets, food stalls, and food trucks often accept cash only, so bringing a small amount of cash will keep you from being caught off guard in front of the line.

• Weather and clothing: Since it is an outdoor event on a midsummer August evening, dress lightly, but you will be walking around the government office courtyard and alleys for a while, so sneakers are comfortable.
• Cash: Bring a small amount of cash for market and food stall purchases. Cafes and restaurants generally accept cards and mobile payments.
• Drone show: The busiest time period. Arrive 30 minutes early to secure a spot.
• Return trip: If it gets late, call a taxi app in advance and check the last KTX departure time beforehand.

The language guidance is centered on Korean, so it may be difficult to hear detailed program explanations in English. But because the content is mainly something you watch and enjoy, such as parades, fashion shows, drone shows, and market food, you can still get fully immersed just from the atmosphere even if you do not understand the language. In fact, I was able to meet foreign visitors at the venue without any difficulty.
