At Exit 5 of Samsan Gymnasium Station on Line 7, the comics begin the moment you step off the subway

When the subway doors open and you come up the stairs at Exit 5, people in cosplay costumes brush past you. The Bucheon International Comics Festival (BICOF) is Korea's flagship comics and webtoon festival, held right in front of Samsan Gymnasium Station around the Korea Manhwa Museum. I remember thinking, "Comics are unfolding in such a huge outdoor park?" but in reality, a whole day slipped by, from indoor museum exhibits to food trucks on the grass. Since it has been held every autumn since 1998, the festival has a stable scale and structure, and it tends to attract many children and families. If you are a foreign friend who loves comics like I do, there is no better place to see the present of Korean webtoons with your own eyes.

The theme the year I went was "Comics and Webtoons Are Open for Business." Works by famous domestic and overseas artists were on display, along with award-winning entries from the national student comics contest, and even satirical cartoons such as the much-talked-about 'Yoon Seok-yeol Car' were exhibited, so people kept stopping for a long time in front of the exhibition hall. The atmosphere naturally made you feel that comics are not just entertainment, but a window through which we read society.

A foreign traveler's day: from ticket booking to the last train home

Before you go, decide on just one thing: the admission ticket. You can buy it on-site, but if you secure an early-bird ticket in advance from Interpark or similar sites, you can skip the ticket line. The admission fee the year I went was around 5,000 won, which was quite reasonable, and because the entry routes for online reservations and on-site buyers were separated, prepaying was much faster. However, since the fee and operating method vary slightly from year to year, check the official page once more for the day-of admission information before you go.

Getting there is really easy. Take Line 7 from Seoul, get off at Samsan Gymnasium Station, and leave through Exit 5; the museum entrance is a 1 to 3 minute walk away. There is also a bus route from Songnae Station on Line 1, but if it's your first time visiting, I strongly recommend the straight Line 7 route, which is hard to get lost on. The daytime events are the main focus, so there is usually not much to worry about the last train at night, but on the opening day, when the opening ceremony is held, events continue in the screening hall from 5 p.m., so if you have evening plans, just check the Line 7 last train time in advance.

On site, it is easiest to enjoy the festival by dividing it into two areas. The museum interior is cool and focused on exhibitions and screenings, so it is good for escaping heat or rain, while the outdoor grass area and the parking lot side are packed with the food truck zone and cosplay photo spots. Most payments can be made by card or mobile pay, but at individual booths such as food trucks or the 'Secret Shop' selling goods, cash can be more convenient, so bringing a small amount of cash will give you peace of mind. Don't worry about language. As befits an international festival, some exhibits include English explanations, and cosplay, drawings, and hands-on activities are attractions that do not require language, so you can still enjoy everything by using your intuition.

Cosplay and food trucks: after noon, the festival really comes alive

One tip: it peaks after noon rather than in the morning. If you arrive in the morning, the grass field may look quiet, but once noon passes, cosplayers pour in and just people-watching makes time fly. Since the 9th Gyeonggi International Cosplay Festival (GICOF) is held together, you can also see the finals of the championship among cosplayers who advanced through regional preliminaries from countries around the world, as well as the amateur competition. The range is wide, from game and anime characters to military cosplay, so if you like taking photos, make sure to bring plenty of camera battery. When asking a cosplayer for a photo, politely asking for permission first is the basic etiquette of this culture.

The food is centered in the food truck zone set up in the outdoor parking lot. The variety is impressive for the size, and I had lunch there, but by the afternoon it gets so crowded that there are hardly any seats left. If you want a snack, it is better to aim for a slightly earlier time. After filling up, you can browse comics at the outdoor manga reading corner on the grass, or stop by participation programs such as Catch Catch Caricature, copyright experience booths, the webtoon OST contest, and the 'Cosplay Civil Service Exam' held on the final day, making for a very full day.

Some practical tips to avoid a wasted trip

There are a few things worth knowing in advance if you want to have a good time.

  • Busy times: Saturday, Sunday, and holiday afternoons are the most crowded. If you want to see the exhibits at a relaxed pace, it is best to start indoors in the morning and then head outside for cosplay after noon.
  • Weather and clothing: Even though it is an autumn festival, it can still be hot during the day. Since you will move between indoor and outdoor areas, comfortable walking shoes, a light outer layer, and a bottle of water are enough.
  • Small cash: Most places accept cards, but individual booths and food trucks may be easier with cash.
  • Signings and talks: It is safer to check the schedule in advance and arrive on time for your favorite artist's signing session. Popular programs fill up quickly.
  • Route caution: Outdoor stage installations may block some park-side exits. When heading back, leave yourself some extra time.

So, who is this for?

If you are a traveler who loves webtoons, comics, and cosplay culture, and wants to experience Korean pop culture firsthand, it is worth setting aside a whole day for. The admission fee is low and it is right in front of the subway station, so access is excellent, making it 부담-free for families or friends experiencing a Korean festival for the first time. I hope you can feel directly in Bucheon’s autumn grass field how a single comic can change the world.
