Ganjeolgot is a cape along the coast of Daesong-ri, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City. Ulsan Tourism introduces it as a representative sunrise-viewing destination where the New Year’s sun rises earliest on Korea’s east coast, noting that sunrise can be seen about one minute earlier than at Homigot in Pohang and about five minutes earlier than at Jeongdongjin in Gangneung. Because the land projects far out toward the sea, the eastern horizon opens up widely, which is the key feature of this location.
The name “Ganjeol” is said to come from the fact that the terrain, viewed from the open sea, resembles a long pole. A “got” is a landform where the land extends sharply into the sea, so the name itself describes the coastal geography of the place. A sunrise festival is held on New Year’s Day, and the festival held from December 31, 2025, to January 1, 2026, featured nighttime landscape displays, sunrise performances, and the sharing of rice-cake soup throughout Ganjeolgot Park.
A century of Ganjeolgot Lighthouse, first illuminated on March 26, 1920
Ganjeolgot Lighthouse has guided vessels navigating the southern East Sea coast since it was first lit on March 26, 1920. This lighthouse is not merely an observation facility; it served as a navigational aid indicating the position of vessels along the coastal route between Busan and Ulsan. The lighthouse building visible today is known to have been renovated on June 1, 2001.
The lighthouse address is 39-2 Ganjeolgot 1-gil, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City. Allow about 60–90 minutes to explore the lighthouse, lawn plaza, and Wishing Postbox starting from the area around 924 Haemaji-ro, the address of Ganjeolgot Park. If you plan to leave immediately after watching the sunrise, avoid approaching stairs and the edge of the coast in the dark, and prepare a windproof jacket and flashlight for safety.
How to mail an actual letter from the 5-meter-high Wishing Postbox
The red Wishing Postbox at Ganjeolgot is a large sculpture measuring 5 meters high and 2.4 meters in both width and depth. It is designed for photographs, but its distinctive feature is that visitors can place actual postcards and letters inside for mailing. Ulsan Tourism states that postcards are distributed free of charge at the nearby Ganjeolgot Haeollje and that postcards deposited in the postbox are delivered nationwide.
During the sunrise season and on weekends, visitors waiting to take photographs and crowds may gather around the postbox. If you want to send a letter, write the address and postal code in advance, and bring something to hold the postcard in place while writing so it does not blow away in the strong sea wind. On-site photographs show visitors taking commemorative pictures around the postbox, which itself serves as one of the park’s main meeting and photo spots.
A 60–90-minute walking route beginning at 924 Haemaji-ro
Ganjeolgot Park is located around 924 Haemaji-ro, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City. The representative address listed by Ulsan Tourism is 28-1 Daesong-ri. The site contains Ganjeolgot Lighthouse, the Wishing Postbox, the New Millennium Memorial, the Mother-and-Daughter Statue, other sculptures, and cafés. Since the route combines broad lawns with sea views, about 40 minutes is sufficient for a quick visit to just the lighthouse and postbox, while one to one and a half hours is appropriate if you include photography and a coastal walk.
Admission is free, and the park is open year-round. However, if sunrise is your main objective, check the seasonal sunrise time and cloud cover the day before. On New Year’s Day, traffic controls and shuttle services may be introduced, unlike during ordinary park visits. During the 2026 sunrise festival, shuttle buses were announced connecting Onyang Sports Park, Dangwol Intersection, the KHNP Human Resources Development Institute, and the Energy Industrial Complex.
Parking for large buses and conditions for bringing pets
According to Ulsan Tourism information, Ganjeolgot has parking facilities, including parking for large buses. Separate men’s and women’s restrooms are available, along with an accessible restroom. Since parking fees are not listed separately on the official tourism page, it is advisable to reconfirm them with the Ulju-gun tourism information office before visiting on an event day or during peak season.
Pets may enter if kept on a leash. However, the park opens directly onto the sea, so winds can be strong in winter and at dawn. Visitors using strollers or wheelchairs may find it more convenient to follow the paved route between the parking area and the main sculptures rather than the grassy or sloped sections. The availability of dedicated on-site information in foreign languages has not been confirmed in the official tourism information.
A half-day itinerary along the Ulju East Coast with Jinha Beach and Seosaengpo Japanese Fortress
Around Ganjeolgot are Jinha Beach, Seosaengpo Japanese Fortress, Nasa Beacon Station, and Oegosan Onggi Village. Ulsan Tourism introduces Jinha Beach as the summer beach immediately next to Ganjeolgot and also mentions Seosaengpo Japanese Fortress and Nasa Beacon Station. After finishing a morning walk at Ganjeolgot following the sunrise, you can connect the southeastern coast of Ulju by passing through Jinha Beach and continuing to Seosaengpo Japanese Fortress.
Ganjeolgot is not a destination focused on nighttime lighting or permanent indoor exhibitions; it is an outdoor attraction centered on the sea, lighthouse, and park sculptures. Therefore, it may be a lower priority for travelers on days of heavy rain or strong-wind advisories, or for those seeking extended indoor experiences. Conversely, if you can travel according to the sunrise time and are willing to endure the sea breeze, it is an excellent place to take in Ulsan’s coastal geography and navigational history at once.
