Overview
The Han River runs through the center of Seoul and is a signature river that divides the city into north and south, making it an important symbolic space for understanding Seoul. A large riverside park made up of a total of 11 districts has been developed along both sides of the river, and it is widely used by citizens as a place for relaxation and leisure. Stretching across the south and north banks throughout Seoul, this area is distinguished by the chance to enjoy both the city and natural riverside scenery at the same time. For foreign travelers, it is well worth visiting as a place where they can take in Seoul’s everyday atmosphere and sense of scale at a glance.

Best Time to Visit
The most comfortable seasons for enjoying the Han River are spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October). The weather is mild and it is easy to spend time outdoors, so these are the most recommended times for foreign travelers.
As for the time of day, late afternoon to early evening is best. It is cooler than during the day and ideal for a relaxed walk or enjoying the riverside atmosphere. Midsummer afternoons are hot, and in winter the wind can make it feel much colder.
For the day of the week, weekdays such as Tuesday through Thursday are the most convenient. Parks and parking lots can be very crowded on weekends and holidays, so weekdays are better if you want to avoid congestion. In particular, evening hours and nice weekends tend to draw many visitors.
In short, late afternoon to early evening on a weekday in spring or autumn is the best time to visit the Han River. If you want a quieter atmosphere, avoid weekends, and it is convenient to use public transportation whenever possible.
How Long to Stay
If you are just taking a short look around the Han River, 1 to 2 hours is enough. If you want to leisurely enjoy a walk in the park or the riverside scenery, around 2 to 3 hours is appropriate. If you plan to also see the Han River bus, nearby Han River parks, cafes, and night-view spots, it is better to allow about half a day (4 to 6 hours).
How to Get There
The Han River is very long, so it is most convenient to travel based on the specific Han River park or pier you plan to visit. Based on the original information, access to Magok Pier is the clearest example.
Subway: Get off at Yangcheonhyanggyo Station on Seoul Subway Line 9, then walk for about 12 minutes to reach Magok Pier. Before using it, check the Han River direction on the station exit signs.
Bus: Buses going near the Han River include 1000 Guri, 1100 Namyangju, 1660 Namyangju, 1670 Namyangju, and 1700 Namyangju. However, the stop where you should get off depends on your destination, so before boarding, it is best to confirm the name of the Han River park/pier again with the driver or on a map app.
On foot: Simply follow the signs toward the Han River from the subway station or bus stop. In particular, walking from Yangcheonhyanggyo Station to Magok Pier is relatively easy. Since riverside areas are large, checking the exact entrance or pier name in advance can save time.
Photo Spots
- Ttukseom Observation Culture Complex (Jabeolle) - Ttukseom Hangang Park
A great place to take photos with a uniquely designed building as the backdrop. On the riverside trail in front of Jabeolle, shoot while facing the building from the front or slightly from the side. Near sunset is best, as you can capture both the building shape and the riverside atmosphere. - Reed Wind Trail - Nanji Hangang Park
A walking trail lined with reeds, ideal for natural portrait photos. If you place the camera in the middle of the path or along the edge and shoot toward the inside of the reed path, the sense of depth becomes stronger. Soft light from late afternoon to before sunset is the most beautiful. - Ecological Landscape Conservation Area - Nanji Hangang Park
The representative photo spot of Nanji Hangang Park, perfect for capturing the natural scenery of the Han River. It is good to shoot from a point with an open view, aiming in a direction where the wetland and sky are both visible. It is quiet in the early morning, and the colors are even more beautiful near sunset.
Night View
The Han River night view shows one of Seoul’s iconic nightscapes, combining the city lights lining the riverside with the illumination of bridges. The lights of the skyscraper forest reflected on the water are especially beautiful, making it a great place for a walk or a light night date.
Around Banpo Bridge, you can also enjoy the rainbow fountain, which makes it even more popular. The colorful lighting and the cool streams of water together make it well known as a photography spot.
The recommended time is from after sunset until before 11:00 p.m. Scenic lights usually come on 30 minutes after sunset and turn off at 23:00, so the best time is right after sunset to around 21:00.
At night, you can enjoy lighting displays such as the Banpo Bridge rainbow fountain, and the operating schedule may vary depending on the weather and season. It is a good idea to check whether it is operating and to review traffic conditions before visiting.
The usage fee is free.
Seasonal Guide
The Han River changes atmosphere greatly depending on the season, making it easy to enjoy at different times of the year.
- Spring (March to April): Cherry blossom season, when the walking trails of Han River parks and the riverside bike paths are especially beautiful. The weather is mild, making it the best time for picnics, walks, and cycling.
- Summer (June to August): Seoul’s summers are hot and humid, but at the Han River, evening walks, night views along the riverside, and picnics with chicken and beer are popular. Visiting near sunset is more comfortable than during the hot daytime.
- Autumn (October to November): The cool weather and fall foliage make this one of the most pleasant seasons. It is great for walking while enjoying the autumn colors in parks and forest paths around the Han River.
- Winter: Although the weather is cold, the calm scenery of the Han River combined with winter lights creates a unique atmosphere. Warm clothing is essential when visiting.
If your trip focuses on outdoor activities, spring and autumn are the most recommended, while in summer evening hours are best, and in winter a short, light visit is ideal.
Local Tips
If you are traveling on foot, we recommend starting from Exit 3 of Ttukseomyuwonji Station and walking along the Han River to Seoul Forest. It is a pleasant way to enjoy a relaxed morning walk and the river breeze.
The Han River also works well as a place to end the day. After visiting a historic site such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, finish your evening by taking in the Han River night view.
When adding the Han River to your Seoul travel route, it is nice to pair it with popular areas such as Namsan, Hongdae, and Gangnam so you can experience the different moods of Seoul together.
