The evolution of its name from around 1900 to Cheongansa in 2002
Cheongansa is said to have been a temple where monks began living around 1900, and around 1950, Mr. Gwak Jae-sun rebuilt the main worship hall on the site of the monks’ quarters. In 1987, Venerable Beopjin reconstructed the main worship hall at its present location.
Cheongansa was once Seongbulsa of the Taego Order of Korean Buddhism, but in 2002, under Venerable Cheonghyeon, who took office as head monk in March 2001, it was renamed Cheongansa, its current name, and changed affiliation to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Cheongansa is also included in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s list of traditional temples from May 2024, so its current temple identity can be understood as having taken shape after this change.
What the old temple site 50 m below the current worship hall tells us
An old temple site lies on the slope approximately 50 m below Cheongansa. Roof-tile fragments and white porcelain fragments from the mid-Joseon period were excavated here, suggesting that a temple may have existed at least by the middle of the Joseon period.
Cheongansa is sometimes presumed to be Bukhyeolsa, founded at the end of the Baekje period. There are also theories that it was a hermitage belonging to Biam-sa, as well as a tradition that a Silla-period Buddhist hall stood at the current temple site. Records even state that the surrounding area was called “Jeolgol,” meaning “temple valley,” so the site should be viewed together with the old temple site on the mountainside rather than its past being judged solely by the temple that has existed since around 1900.

Cheongansa is listed as open at all times and 24 hours a day, with no closing days throughout the year. Admission is listed as free, so there is no need to assume a standard ticketing procedure.
However, as the temple is a religious space, publicly available information does not confirm the areas accessible inside the main worship hall, access during Buddhist services, photography restrictions, whether cash payment is necessary, or the availability of an audio guide. Pungseongchae Camping Site is within approximately 1,900 m, Castle Garden within approximately 2,084 m, and Ray Castle CC within approximately 2,472 m.
