The key point is that it is not simply a park where flowers are planted in spring, but a farm that cultivates barley, buckwheat, sunflowers, and other crops to showcase agricultural landscapes by season.
Green barley grows along the hills in spring, while buckwheat flowers continue into autumn. Gochang County advises that the buckwheat flower season runs from early to late September, and Welchon introduces the barley field as covering 170,000 pyeong. Since figures vary among information providers depending on the area covered, it is more practical on site to choose a section of the walking trail and walk it rather than trying to view the entire expansive field at once.
April 18–May 10, 2026: Conditions for the 23rd festival and walking between the fields
The 23rd Gochang Green Barley Field Festival was held from April 18 to May 10, 2026, throughout the Hakwon Farm area. The Gochang Cultural Tourism Foundation stated that it was organized by Gochang County and the Gochang Green Barley Field Festival Committee. General admission to the festival itself was free, but walking between the fields was operated as a separate experience.
According to Hakwon Farm’s notice, the 2026 walking experience between the fields ran from April 3 until mid-May and could vary depending on field conditions. The fee was 3,000 won per person, while children aged six and under and Gochang County residents carrying identification could enter free of charge. Experience hours were 08:30–18:30, with final admission at 17:50. Since the schedule and fees for the following spring may change each year, check the farm’s notices first before setting out.
Visit in late April, when the green barley becomes denser, or around Ip'ha
In a notice dated March 20, 2026, Hakwon Farm announced that the barley would grow rapidly from April and produce ears around late April. The same notice explained that rapeseed flowers could generally be seen for about one month from early April. Therefore, if you want to see the height and ears of the green barley together with blooming rapeseed, it is safest to choose a date after checking the crop-status notices for mid-to-late April.
Gochang County Cultural Tourism introduces the period around Ip'ha as the time when the green barley is at its greenest and produces blue-green ears. Since Ip'ha, one of the seasonal divisions, usually falls in early May, late April to early May may be a better time to expect dense barley ears than the first week of the festival. However, color and height vary with rainfall, wind, and growing conditions, so the scenery on a particular date cannot be guaranteed.
The difference between event venue address 150 Hakwon Nongjang-gil and farm information addresses 154 and 158-6
The festival event information lists the address as 150 Hakwon Nongjang-gil, Gongeum-myeon, Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province. Meanwhile, Gochang County Cultural Tourism lists the address of Hakwon Tourist Farm as 158-6 Hakwon Nongjang-gil, and Welchon lists it as 154 Hakwon Nongjang-gil. This appears to be a difference in notation resulting from different address standards for event venues and facilities within the same farm area. If you are visiting for the event, enter “Gochang Green Barley Field Festival” or 150 Hakwon Nongjang-gil into your navigation system first, and recheck the parking information before departure.

Gochang County’s tourism page describes the farm as open year-round with parking facilities available. However, access to the paths between the fields, the restaurant, café, and experience programs varies by season, so do not assume that every facility is available simply because the farm is described as open year-round.
From Gochang Public Bus Terminal to the entrance of Hakwon Farm by the Gongeum–Seonsan bus
If you are not driving, the official rural tourism information recommends taking a bus from Gochang Public Bus Terminal via Mujang Terminal, then using the Gongeum–Seonsan bus and getting off at “Hakwon Farm Entrance.” A Korea Tourism Organization travel article also introduces taking a Seonsan-bound bus from Gochang Terminal, getting off at the “Green Barley Field” stop, and walking for about 15 minutes. Rural routes may have long intervals between buses, so secure the round-trip timetable in advance.
For those driving, Welchon recommends approaching Hakwon Farm via National Route 22 from the Jeongeup Interchange, then Hongdeok and National Route 23, followed by Gochang and Local Route 796, and continuing through Mujang and Gongeum to Hakwon Farm. During the festival period, there have been cases where a large free parking lot was operated, and on weekends and public holidays in 2026, shuttle buses ran near Seondong Elementary School. Since this information is limited to the festival period, ask separately about parking locations and shuttle service on non-festival days.
One to two hours walking dirt paths and hills: why wheelchairs and strollers may face limitations
The main route through the green barley fields consists of walking paths between the fields and gently sloping hills. The Korea Tourism Organization recommends comfortable athletic shoes because the paths are dirt and include inclines. Since the 2026 walking experience between the fields was also announced as subject to change depending on field conditions, shoes may get wet and wheeled mobility devices may be inconvenient immediately after rain.
Allowing one to two hours, including photography, is reasonable for a visit. Hakwon Farm has a directly operated restaurant, snack shop, agricultural products store, and grass sports field. In spring 2026, the Hakwon Farm Restaurant operated from March 21 to June 7, 09:30–18:00, with the last order at 17:20. Café Neolbeundeul was announced as operating from 09:00–18:00 during the season, with the last order at 17:20, but this was also seasonal operating information for that period.
A western Gochang day itinerary linking Sangha Farm, 17 km away, and Seonunsa Temple, 27 km away
Rather than returning after seeing only the green barley fields, you can combine the visit with Sangha Farm and Seonunsa Temple if you have access to a car. A Korea Tourism Organization travel article gives the distance from Hakwon Farm to Sangha Farm as approximately 17 km, or 20 minutes by car, and to Seonunsa Temple as approximately 27 km, or 33 minutes by car. The green barley fields focus on outdoor walking, Sangha Farm is an experiential rural-themed space, and Seonunsa Temple centers on a mountain temple and walking, so the activities offer different experiences throughout the day.
Conversely, if you are relying solely on public transportation, you should first consider the bus frequency on the route to the green barley fields. On busy days such as festival weekends, vehicle controls and shuttle services may be implemented, while on non-festival days the connection time to Sangha Farm and Seonunsa Temple may be lengthy. Travelers using public transportation may find it more suitable to spend enough time at one location.
Buckwheat flowers from early to late September, followed by summer sunflowers: Hakwon Farm’s second season
This is not a place whose appeal disappears after the green barley season ends. Gochang County Cultural Tourism advises that buckwheat flowers bloom from early to late September, while Welchon introduces late August to early October as the buckwheat landscape season. Because the listed periods differ, it is best to plan around September and confirm the exact flowering status through the farm’s current notices.
The Gochang Cultural Tourism Foundation’s tourist map introduces spring green barley, summer sunflowers, and autumn buckwheat flowers as Hakwon Farm’s seasonal landscapes. Since the same hills change in color and purpose depending on the crop, do not expect the scenery after June to be the same as in spring simply because the site is called the “Green Barley Fields.” In spring, check whether the paths between the fields are open; in autumn, check whether the buckwheat is in bloom.
