Space Walk is not merely a sculpture to look at; it is a structure that visitors climb up and down directly along the stairs. According to official information, the track is 333 m long and has 717 steps. The artwork measures 60 m x 57 m x 25(H) m, and visitors can see the surroundings in 360 degrees from the top.

From the higher sections, you can see Yeongildae Beach, the East Sea, Pohang’s urban area, and even the POSCO steelworks in the distance. The floor consists of a steel mesh structure, so the scenery below your feet may be visible. This can be uncomfortable for travelers who are uneasy with heights or open flooring beneath their feet.

An Urban Sculpture Created by Pohang City and POSCO in 2019

Space Walk was developed as a sculpture construction project to establish Hwanho Park as a landmark. POSCO and Pohang City signed an MOU for its construction in April 2019, and German artists Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth were selected as the artists in September 2019.

The production period ran from April 1, 2019, to November 17, 2021, and a completion unveiling ceremony was held on November 18, 2021. The total weight of Space Walk, including the entrance stairs, is 317 tons, and it has 25 supporting columns. The design period was nine months (May 2020–January 2021), and the production period was approximately 13 months (November 2020–November 2021). The foundation uses 114 micropiles.

The structure was designed based on a basic wind speed of 40 m/s and a design wind speed of 67 m/s, applying Seismic Grade 1 standards capable of withstanding a major earthquake measuring approximately 6.4–6.5 on the Richter scale.
