Bohyeonsan Dam Monorail: Climbing 750 m up the Mountain Slope to the Zipline Launch Point

The Bohyeonsan Dam Monorail is a transport facility that climbs 750 m to the zipline launch point in about 10 minutes. On weekends and public holidays, the monorail cannot be used separately, so you must plan to use the 28,000-won zipline and check the operating hours and boarding requirements.

The 750 m ascent is a zip-wire transfer section, not a sightseeing train

The Bohyeonsan Dam monorail is a mode of transport included in the Bohyeonsan Dam Zip Wire facility at 196 Baenamujeong-gil, Hwabuk-myeon, Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Yeongcheon City’s official information describes the monorail as a facility that transports visitors to the zip-wire launch point, and the operating section is 750 m long.

According to an article, the uphill ride takes about 10 minutes, and passengers can view the Bohyeonsan ridgeline during the ride. Therefore, it should not be considered a regular sightseeing train that takes visitors to a summit viewpoint using only the monorail. In particular, standalone monorail use is not available on weekends and public holidays.

An experiential facility at Bohyeonsan Dam created by the 2017 surrounding-area improvement project

The monorail and zip wire were installed as part of the Bohyeonsan Dam surrounding-area improvement project, with a total of 4.9 billion won invested in the two facilities. The ordinance governing the management and operation of the related facilities was enacted on May 30, 2017, and is recorded as Ordinance No. 841.

For this reason, the monorail is closer to an access facility for starting the zip-wire experience than an independent mountain transportation system. Under the current ordinance as well, “Bohyeonsan Dam Zip Wire” refers to the entire set of facilities, including the zip wire, monorail, and ancillary facilities.

09:30–17:00 from Tuesday through Sunday; closed on Mondays

Operating hours are 09:30–17:00 from Tuesday through Sunday. The regular closing day is every Monday. If Monday coincides with a legal public holiday, the facility closes on the first non-holiday afterward. However, this closing rule excludes the peak season.

The official page lists 17:00 as the closing time, but does not provide a separate admission cutoff time. Visitors should plan an itinerary that continues from 09:30 to 17:00 through the zip-wire ride, and foreign travelers planning a Monday visit should consider both public-holiday status and whether peak-season rules apply.

The 28,000-won fee includes the monorail, but no separate standalone fare is listed

The zip-wire fee on Yeongcheon City’s official page is 28,000 won and includes the monorail fare. The official page currently does not list a separate standalone monorail fare. Under the ordinance, the 30% discount for Yeongcheon residents applies to the zip-wire facility-use fee and does not apply to standalone monorail rides.

People with disabilities, national merit recipients, youths, and groups of 10 or more are eligible for a 10% discount. A visitor review from around 2023 introduced the monorail fare as 6,000 won per person, but this is a figure from an older review rather than the current official price list, so it should be distinguished from the 28,000-won zip-wire-linked fare.

You must first meet the 30–125 kg and 120–210 cm requirements

The zip-wire requirements are a body weight of 30–125 kg and a height of 120–210 cm. Since the monorail is the transportation method to the zip-wire launch point, a plan to visit on a weekend or public holiday and use only the monorail does not match the official operating conditions.

The zip wire operates with two 1.4 km lines, and two people can ride simultaneously. Some sections reach speeds exceeding 100 km/h, and a review from around 2023 describes the ride as lasting about 90 seconds. It is important to note that for people with a fear of heights or those who do not want a fast descent, this is an experience that does not end with the monorail section alone.

After parking at 196 Baenamujeong-gil, plan the launch-station and return routes separately

The road-name address for the monorail and zip wire is 196 Baenamujeong-gil, Hwabuk-myeon, Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Parking is available and is listed as free. However, Yeongcheon City’s official page does not provide public-transport station names, bus routes, or exit numbers that foreign visitors can readily use. In practice, it is therefore more realistic to prioritize traveling by car rather than planning transfers from a train station or bus terminal.

The monorail travels 750 m uphill for about 10 minutes before arriving at the zip-wire launch point. A review states that visitors return to the parking lot on a waiting bus after arriving at the zip-wire landing point, so keep in mind that the experience may continue beyond the uphill monorail ride through the zip-wire descent and return to the parking lot.

How to combine the 530 m suspension bridge and the 250 m main dam on the same day

Near the monorail departure point is the 530 m-long Bohyeonsan Dam Suspension Bridge. Construction began on April 26, 2021, and was completed on March 8, 2023. Its features include X-shaped towers modeled after stars and a star-shaped observation deck.

A review introduces the main Bohyeonsan Dam as Korea’s first arch-shaped concrete gravity dam, standing 58.5 m high and measuring 250 m long. A perimeter trail and waterfront park have been created around the suspension bridge, and nighttime lighting has also been installed. Visitors can therefore plan the monorail, zip wire, and lake scenery during the day and the illuminated landscape at night.
