How 27.972 tons of Yeongdong grapes became a 420 m tunnel

Yeongdong Wine Tunnel is a 420 m-long, tunnel-shaped tourist space established in Yeongdong-gun Rainbow Healing Town. The tunnel varies in scale by section, measuring 4–12 m wide and 4–8 m high, and presents Yeongdong’s grapes and wine along a single visitor route.

According to information from Yeongdong-gun, grape production totals 27.972 tons, accounting for 10.8% of national production. There are 43 local wine wineries, consisting of one corporate winery and 42 farm-based wineries. This shows why the exhibition focuses on Yeongdong’s farm-based wine industry rather than simply introducing wines from overseas.

Ten themed zones continue from the entrance to the exit passage

The entire space consists of 10 themed zones, including a vineyard journey, Wine Culture Hall, Yeongdong Wine Hall, World Wine Hall, Wine in Films, Wine Experience Hall, Fantasy Tunnel, Event Hall, and photo zones. Since the official guide recommends a designated viewing order, it is best to proceed in sequence after entering rather than skipping directly to only the areas you want to see.

The Wine Experience Hall includes wine tasting, wine cuisine, wine-glass performances, and a sales area. The Fantasy Tunnel uses the exit passage as an exhibition space, where visitors conclude their tour by passing through multi-sided panoramic videos and lighting displays using wine bottles.

Learn about grape varieties from 10 countries around the world on the vineyard journey

The vineyard journey exhibition creates the feeling of walking through a real vineyard by hanging illuminated grape clusters overhead. Inside, there is a grape walking trail, and information about grape cultivation and varieties is presented by dividing 10 globally renowned grape-producing countries with themed colors.

The Wine Culture Hall uses advanced presentation media to introduce the history and appearance of grape wine, which has accompanied human civilization since ancient times. It also includes a Dionysus photo zone, an interactive ball-throwing activity, and a constellation-finding activity, offering more than simply reading exhibition panels.

Compare the local and global perspectives at the Yeongdong Wine Hall and World Wine Hall

The Yeongdong Wine Hall introduces the history of Yeongdong wine and local wineries, and is described as a space offering Yeongdong wine tastings and bicycle-experience content. Visitors first see how wines produced in Yeongdong are connected to the local industry before moving to the sales and tasting areas.

The World Wine Hall presents the routes by which wine spread and provides wine-related information, along with an exhibition of wine-making processes and wine tools. The adjacent Wine in Films hall displays wine scenes from world-famous masterpieces and Korean films, allowing visitors to view production-focused exhibits separately from cultural scenes.

Do not miss the thousands of bottles in the wine cellar and the tunnel dug during the Japanese colonial period

Thousands of wine bottles are displayed in the wine cellar, along with large oak barrels. The quantity of bottles and scale of the oak barrels distinguish it from an ordinary small tasting shop, presenting the storage and aging of Yeongdong wine as a spatial experience.

Inside the tunnel, a dugout tunnel excavated by Koreans through forced manual labor during the Japanese colonial period for use as an ammunition storage facility has been preserved. Although its entrance had collapsed, the space was discovered and preserved during construction of the wine tunnel. Do not simply pass through after viewing the wine exhibits; also take time to consider the traces of the past in which this place was created.

From Yeongdong Station, go 800 m; from Yeongdong IC, head toward the fire station

Foreign visitors arriving by train can use Yeongdong Station on the Gyeongbu Line as their starting point. The official Yeongdong-gun directions indicate a route continuing straight for 800 m after arriving at Yeongdong Station, but do not provide a specific station exit number, bus route number, or bus service interval.

For drivers, the suggested route to Yeongdong Wine Tunnel proceeds from Yeongdong IC toward Yeongdong-gun Office, the downtown area, and Yeongdong Fire Station in sequence. The address is the vicinity of 30 Yeongdong Healing-ro, Yeongdong-eup, Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, postal code 29151. Parking is available in the lot in front of the wine tunnel.

Visiting hours are 10:00–18:00, and tickets can be purchased until 30 minutes before closing. Tickets are sold only on-site, so do not plan your visit on the assumption that online reservation tickets are available. The main contact numbers are 043-740-3636~7.

Bring a light jacket and your phone, but check the visitor restrictions first

Visitor reviews mention that the tunnel interior is shorter than expected, so the tour may not take long. Some reviews also say that the interior is cool, making a light jacket useful. Since photo zones and trick-art zones are repeatedly mentioned, bringing a phone or camera is worthwhile.

The entire exhibition area is non-smoking, and pets other than guide dogs are not allowed. Running is restricted inside the exhibition hall, and food that may be consumed in the wine tunnel is limited to the tastings and samples provided or sold there. The official information does not specify whether photography is prohibited, whether English information or an audio guide is available, whether the site is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, or whether payment is cash-only.

Since no precise recommended visiting time is provided, it is safer to calculate both the time needed to travel 800 m from Yeongdong Station and the designated viewing order. The Event Hall can be used for weddings, seminars, and events; the event inquiry number is 043-740-3523.
