Practical Preparation for Hiking in Sobaeksan National Park from Eouigok to Birobong
Sobaeksan National Park is a mountainous national park centered around Birobong, spanning Danyang-gun in North Chungcheong Province and Yeongju-si and Bonghwa-gun in North Gyeongsang Province. The Eouigok Course may take approximately 5–6 hours for a round trip to Birobong, so check parking, restroom availability, and mountain entry restriction hours first.

A 322.011㎢ Mountain National Park Designated in 1987
Sobaeksan National Park was designated as Korea’s 18th national park in 1987. The officially announced area is 322.011㎢, making it the fourth-largest mountain-type national park after Jirisan, Seoraksan, and Odaesan.
A notice announcing an area change on May 1, 2023, lists the revised area as 321.264㎢. The park spans Danyang County in Chungcheongbuk-do, and Yeongju City and Bonghwa County in Gyeongsangbuk-do; the Danyang County section covers 154.158㎢.

Where You Meet the Baekdu Daegan Ridge at Birobong, 1,439.5 m
The highest peak of Sobaeksan is Birobong, at 1,439.5 m above sea level. Along the Baekdu Daegan ridge line are Gungmangbong at 1,420.8 m, Yeonhwabong at 1,383 m, and Dosolbong at 1,314.2 m.
There is an expansive grassland area around the summit of Birobong. Yeonhwabong is home to the Sobaeksan National Astronomy Observatory, which the Korea Tourism Organization introduces as a facility that laid the foundation for astronomy in Korea.

Royal Azalea Ridges Compared by Yi Hwang to a Silk Curtain
Sobaeksan is known for royal azaleas in spring and snow flowers in winter. The Korea National Park Service explains that many visitors come in spring, while snow flowers bloom along the Baekdu Daegan ridges in winter.
Yi Hwang, also known as Toegye, described the royal azaleas of Sobaeksan as looking so colorful that walking among them felt like walking inside a silk curtain, and as giving him the feeling of attending a lavish feast. However, flowering dates and the formation of snow flowers depend on the weather, so specific dates cannot be guaranteed.

5.4 km to Birobong Starting from Eouigok-ri in Danyang
The destination discussed in this article is the Eouigok Course in Eouigok-ri, Gagok-myeon, Danyang County, Chungcheongbuk-do. The Korea National Park Service’s official hiking-course list includes the Choamsa, Samga-dong, Huibangsa, Jukryeong, Eouigok, Cheondong Valley, and Dosolbong courses, so the Eouigok starting point should not be confused with other trailheads.
A hiking review from February 2023 recorded approximately 5.4 km one way from the Eouigok starting point to Birobong, taking about 2 hours and 4 minutes. The same record noted 1.2 km and 26 minutes from the ridge to the Eouigok Junction, 1.3 km and 19 minutes from the stairs to the ridge, and 0.4 km and 12 minutes from the Eouigok Junction to Birobong.

Why You Should Allow 5–6 Hours for a Round Trip
A 2025 review of the Eouigok Course estimated approximately 5–6 hours of actual hiking time for a round trip to Birobong. Another review recorded about 3 hours for the ascent and about 2 hours 30 minutes for the descent, while some hikers spent more than an hour at Birobong alone.
Therefore, including summit photographs and rest breaks, it is difficult to plan this as a short half-day walk. The Korea National Park Service classifies trails into five levels—very easy, easy, moderate, difficult, and very difficult—according to steepness, distance, surface conditions, and time required. It describes “difficult” trails as medium-distance courses taking 4–7 hours and “very difficult” trails as long-distance courses taking 7 hours or more.

The Eouigok Parking Lot, Where Arriving Before 8 a.m. Matters
The Korea Tourism Organization states that parking is available in the northern section of Sobaeksan National Park. Parking fees are listed as 2,000 won for compact cars; 5,000 won in peak season and 4,000 won in the off-season for small and midsize cars; and 7,500 won in peak season and 6,000 won in the off-season for large vehicles.
However, a 2025 review of the Eouigok Course recorded that the on-site parking lot was extremely small and that arriving before 8 a.m. was necessary to find a space. After 8 a.m., visitors may need to park along the roadside and walk 10–20 minutes to the trail entrance, so drivers should include this additional walk in their hiking schedule.

Reviews Say There Are No Toilets Mid-Trail or at Birobong
According to a 2025 review, the only toilet facilities on the Eouigok Course were at the parking lot, with no toilets in the middle of the trail or at the summit. It is practical to use the parking-lot facilities before setting out and prepare sufficient water and snacks in advance for the long hike.
The mountain trail in Eouigok-ri may include steep slopes, stairs, and rocky paths, and no sections accessible by wheelchair or stroller have been confirmed. The national park facilities guide includes offices, visitor support centers, visitor information centers, branch offices, campgrounds, and shelters, but the exact operating hours of the Eouigok Visitor Support Center have not been confirmed.

Trail-Specific Entry Restrictions Rather Than One Parkwide Schedule
Sobaeksan National Park does not apply a single visiting schedule to the entire park; instead, it operates by designating entry and restriction times for individual trails. Since May 16, 2015, a designated entry-time system has been implemented in national parks throughout Korea, excluding Taeanhaean.
Accordingly, the current entry and restriction times for the Eouigok Course should be checked on the Korea National Park Service’s designated entry-time system and trail-control status page on the day of departure. No national park admission fee was confirmed, and no separate regular closing day was confirmed; parking fees may be charged separately.

Address and Contact Information for Visitors Starting from Abroad
The address of the northern section of Sobaeksan National Park registered with the Korea Tourism Organization is 494 Namhangang-ro, Gagok-myeon, Danyang County, Chungcheongbuk-do. The requested address for Eouigok-ri is Eouigok-ri, Gagok-myeon, Danyang County, Chungcheongbuk-do; for navigation or taxis, enter the destination specifically as the Eouigok Course starting point.
The latest bus routes, stops, service intervals, and walking time after getting off the bus to the Eouigok starting point have not been confirmed. Foreign visitors traveling from the Danyang area should check transportation and trail-control information on the official website sobaek.knps.or.kr before departure. Inquiries can be made to the Sobaeksan National Park Northern Office at 043-423-0708. The phone number for the Yeongju-side office is 054-630-0700.
],Information to Prepare Before Hiking and Travelers for Whom This May Not Be Suitable
The Eouigok Course is approximately 5.4 km one way to Birobong, and reviews estimate about 5–6 hours for a round trip, so an early start is necessary if you plan to reach the summit. Considering the review stating that the parking-lot toilet was the only facility and the record that an additional 10–20 minutes of walking may be required after 8 a.m., prepare water, snacks, and warm, waterproof clothing at the trailhead.
The Eouigok Course may not suit travelers who prioritize short walks, flat paths, or wheelchair and stroller access. Conversely, it is suitable for travelers who aim to see Birobong’s 1,439.5 m grasslands and the Baekdu Daegan ridge and can manage stairs and a long hike. The designated entry-time system and same-day trail-control status must be checked before departure.
