Three Peaks Rising from the Middle of the Namhangang River: Dodamsambong in Danyang

Dodamsambong consists of three rocky peaks shaped by karst terrain remaining along the upper Namhangang River in Maepo-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, and is regarded as the first scenic attraction of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang. From the free observation deck, you can take in Janggunbong Peak, topped by Samdojeong Pavilion, along with the two peaks on either side, and easily combine Seokmun Gate, the Sambong Story Hall, and water activities into one itinerary.

Three Peaks of the Namhan River’s ‘Remnant Terrain’ Designated Scenic Site No. 44

Dodam Sambong consists of three unusual rock formations located along the upper Namhan River in Hagoeri, Maepo-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Danyang Tourism describes them as three islands remaining in the middle of the Danyang River, part of a ‘remnant terrain,’ and notes that the surrounding area also offers views of the karst landscape characteristic of limestone regions.

Under the national heritage classification, Dodam Sambong is a scenic site of natural beauty and was designated Scenic Site No. 44 on September 9, 2008. The largest central peak, Janggunbong, has the hexagonal pavilion Samdojeong, while the peaks on either side are called Cheobong and Cheopbong. Since the three peaks stand in the middle of the river, the key experience is viewing them head-on from the observation deck.

Keep Jeong Do-jeon’s Pen Name ‘Sambong’ Separate from the Legend

Dodam Sambong is often associated with ‘Sambong,’ the pen name of Jeong Do-jeon, a meritorious subject who helped establish the Joseon dynasty. However, the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture introduces as an oral legend the story that Sambonsan Mountain in Jeongseon was carried away by a flood and that the young Jeong Do-jeon rejected a demand for taxes, while explicitly stating that recent research does not recognize a direct relationship between Dodam Sambong and Jeong Do-jeon.

Therefore, it is more accurate to understand the statue of Jeong Do-jeon and the ‘Sambong’ story at the site as part of the local narrative that Danyang has built over many years. Geologically, the site is a karst erosional landform developed on a limestone plateau, with conical peaks remaining in the deep waterway formed as the Namhan River curved through the area.

  • Central peak: Janggunbong or Nampyeonbong
  • Peaks on either side: Cheobong and Cheopbong
  • Pavilion: Samdojeong atop Janggunbong
  • National heritage designation date: September 9, 2008

From the Observation Deck to Seokmun: How to Divide the Slopes and Stairs

The flattest viewing areas at Dodam Sambong are the observation deck in front of the parking lot and the park area with the statue of Jeong Do-jeon. According to Accessible Tourism information, the observation deck and park area have few changes in level, and five accessible parking spaces and an accessible restroom are available. There are also ramps along the road toward the restaurant area and convenience store.

However, there is a difference in elevation between the parking lot and the photo zone at the statue of Jeong Do-jeon, so wheelchair users should consider having assistance from a companion. To include Seokmun, allow for the uphill and stair sections continuing from the inner part of the parking lot. It is practical to combine Dodam Sambong and Seokmun on the same day, while visitors using strollers or mobility aids may wish to limit their sightseeing mainly to the observation deck.

  • Accessible parking spaces: 5
  • Accessible restroom: available
  • Observation deck and park: areas with few changes in level
  • Between the photo zone and parking lot: difference in elevation
  • Toward Seokmun: allow for uphill and stair sections

Why You Should Not Approach the Water and How to Prepare for Your Visit

Dodam Sambong is a place to view the natural rock peaks in the middle of the river, not a place to enter or climb the peaks. On September 28, 2024, a cruise boat collided with a rock near the Dodam Sambong dock, injuring some passengers. Therefore, when taking part in a water activity, it is important to follow the weather, operating conditions, and safety instructions provided before departure.

Reports in 2025 also raised concerns about damage to underwater rock formations at Cheopbong. Pedestrians should not leave the railings or decks, and it is best not to use riverside rocks or locations close to the water as photography spots. In summer, bring a hat to block the sunlight and drinking water; in winter, check on site whether the riverside deck is icy.

  • Entry into the peaks or approach to the rock faces: do not do this
  • Water activities: check weather and safety instructions before departure
  • Summer preparations: hat, water, and sun protection
  • Winter preparations: check for icy decks and wear windproof clothing
  • Outdoor landscape viewing: use the railings and designated walkways

A Short, Accurate Order for Viewing the First Scene of the Eight Scenic Sites of Danyang

On your first visit, park and first view the arrangement of the three peaks from the information center and observation deck. Then move to the photo zone near the statue of Jeong Do-jeon and decide whether to continue toward Seokmun. Since Dodam Sambong is a place where three peaks appear in a row in the middle of the Namhan River, securing a frontal view is the key to the experience rather than traveling far around the site.

For free admission only, arrive between 09:00 and 18:00. If you also plan to take the motorboat, it is safer to call ahead and confirm whether boats are operating before 17:30. Sambong Story Hall closes at 17:00, so if you want to prioritize the indoor exhibition, visit it before viewing the outdoor scenery. If you need information in a foreign language, you can also use the on-site information center or the tourism information hotline 1330.
