Connection to the 1980s Comprehensive Tourism Development and the Hyeopjaegul–Ssangyonggul Area
Hyeopjae Beach was developed as one component of Jeju’s comprehensive tourism development plan in the 1980s. Because it developed into a tourism area linking lava-cave zones such as Hyeopjaegul and Ssangyonggul, lava formations, and Biyangdo, its context becomes clearer when understood together with the volcanic terrain around Hallim rather than as a destination for viewing only one beach.
The beach is also part of Jeju Olle Trail Route 14 and directly adjoins Geumneung Beach. If swimming and a beach walk are combined, a visit takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. If you walk to Geumneung Beach and back or wait until sunset, it is more realistic to allow at least 3 hours.
Views Toward Biyangdo and Gentle Water Depths: Conditions to Know Before Swimming
Biyangdo lies directly in front of the beach, and the Jeju Tourism Organization presents it as a key viewpoint in the Hyeopjae landscape. Hyeopjae is described as having a gentle slope and relatively shallow water, but water depth, wave height, and rip-current risks vary with the tides and weather. Visitors should therefore follow the safety staff’s control lines and use only areas where swimming is permitted.
During the operating season, the comprehensive situation room operates at 064-728-3981~2. Parasols, tubes, and raised platforms are advertised as available for paid rental at Hyeopjae Hall. Since the exact rental items, prices, and operating hours may vary each peak season, visitors should follow the on-site information provided that day.
Restrictions on Pets Entering the Water During the Summer Season and Deciding Whether to Visit at Night
Pets may not enter designated swimming areas during the beach’s operating season. There is also guidance that bringing pets may itself be restricted depending on complaints from swimmers or on-site conditions. If visiting with a dog, first check on-site whether walking on the sand is permitted and which areas can be accessed.
The Jeju Tourism Organization indicates that nighttime operation may be possible in summer, but opening and closing dates and nighttime operating hours vary by year and are not fixed information. For the 2026 opening season, nighttime safety management, and shower and changing-room operations, it is safest to reconfirm with Jeju-si or the beach comprehensive situation room at 064-728-3981 immediately before departure.
Access Beginning at 329-10 Hallim-ro and the Hyeopjae Beach Bus Stop

The area around 160 Hallimhaean-ro may overlap with the route to the beach, but for navigation purposes it is better to cross-check the official tourism address at 329-10 Hallim-ro with signs for public parking lots on site.
For bus travel, use the Hyeopjae Beach bus stop as the reference point. When traveling directly from Jeju Airport, a known route is to take trunk bus 202 and transfer at locations such as the Hallim Transfer Bus Stop. However, departure intervals, transfer locations, and travel times change frequently, so check the day’s departure time and stop number through the Jeju Bus Information System.
Fees After 30 Minutes of Free Parking and Times to Avoid Full Lots in Peak Season
Information on seasonal paid operation at public parking lots around Hyeopjae Beach is presented differently depending on the season, so it is necessary to review Jeju-si parking information again before arrival. Private reference materials from 2026 describe the system as free for the first 30 minutes for ordinary passenger cars, followed by a basic fee of 1,000 won plus 500 won for each additional 15 minutes. Paid operating hours in peak season are listed as 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
A separate public parking lot with eight spaces at 1689-2 Hyeopjae-ri is marked as free 24 hours a day, but it should not be confused with the beach parking lot. On summer weekends, spaces closest to the beach can fill quickly, so it is better to arrive in the morning or combine buses and walking, and avoid parking on the roadside.
A One-Day Western Coast Route Continuing to Geumneung Beach and Hallim Park
Geumneung Beach is next to Hyeopjae, so both beaches can be visited together by following the sandy shore. Official tourism guides list Hallim Park, Geumneung Stone Park, and Wolryeong Cactus Village in addition to Geumneung Beach as nearby destinations. Rather than viewing only Hyeopjae briefly and moving on immediately, allocating at least 2 hours to the beach section including Geumneung makes the itinerary less rushed.
Hyeopjae suits travelers seeking views toward Biyangdo around sunset, but satisfaction may be lower on days with strong winds or rain when it is difficult to remain outdoors for long. The official tourism page marks the specific availability of wheelchair and stroller access, accessible parking spaces, and on-site foreign-language guidance as “Very Difficult,” so advance inquiries resembling a preliminary site check are recommended when mobility assistance is needed.
