A Sea Lesson in Hado-ri, Jeju, Guided by the Tides

Hado Fishing Village Experience and Recreation Village, located on Haemaji Coastal Road in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, offers hands-on experiences of traditional coastal skills from the sea around Hado-ri, including haenyeo diving, tidal-flat foraging, and conch gathering at stone fish traps. Operating periods and start times vary by program. In particular, the haenyeo diving experience follows the tides, so phone reservations and same-day reconfirmation are required.

How ‘Bareut’ and ‘Wondam’ became experiences at the sea of Hado-ri

Hado Fishing Village Experience and Recreation Village is located at 1897-27 Haemajihaean-ro, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. The five experiences listed in the official guide are bamboo-line fishing, snorkeling, bareut gathering, wondam experience, and haenyeo diving experience. The main contact number is 010-6396-3075, the landline is 064-783-1996, and reservations are accepted by phone for each experience.

‘Bareut gathering’ is a Jeju term for collecting turban shells, goose barnacles, crabs, limpets, acorn barnacles, sea lettuce, and other marine life in shallow coastal waters. A wondam is a communal fishing facility made by piling stones to use the coastal terrain and tidal range to catch fish. At Hado, it is used for catching turban shells by hand inside the wondam.

Program fees and things to bring differ from April to October

Bareut gathering operates from April to October and costs 15,000 won per person. Parking and credit card payments are available. Participants should bring gloves, aqua shoes or sandals, a hat, and sunscreen. The official guide warns that the coastal floor may be slippery.

Wondam experience operates from May to October and costs 20,000 won per person. Aqua shoes or sandals, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, and a change of clothes are required, and participants must not run inside the wondam. Both programs depend on sea level, so do not treat them as fixed, open-ended sightseeing schedules. When making a reservation, it is safer to ask about the tide and meeting time as well.

  • Bareut gathering: April–October, 15,000 won per person
  • Wondam experience: May–October, 20,000 won per person
  • Both experiences: Parking available, card payments accepted
  • Essential equipment for both: Aqua shoes or sandals with slip-resistant soles

The experience takes about two hours including preparation, but the start time may vary by approximately 30 minutes depending on the tide. Before booking, call 010-6396-3075 to check the tide, group capacity, and sea conditions

The village’s official website has separate menus for experience reservations and monthly tide information. Therefore, unlike a tourist attraction that permits walk-in entry after paying an admission fee, visiting hours at Hado Fishing Village Experience Village are determined by the reserved program and the tide on that day. It is practical to first provide the desired experience, date, number of participants, and participant ages by calling 010-6396-3075 or 064-783-1996.

Haenyeo diving experience is listed as having parking and card payments available, and bareut gathering and wondam experience are likewise each registered as allowing parking and card payments. However, the official page does not separately specify general opening hours or regular closing days for the village as a whole, so call to confirm whether on-site registration is possible even on days without scheduled experiences.

How to take bus 201 from Jeju-si to Hado-ri Dongdong Bus Stop

By public transportation, the Korea Tourism Organization guide recommends traveling from Jeju International Airport or downtown Jeju on bus 111 or 111-1 to the Seongsan Ilchulbong Entrance, then transferring to bus 201 and getting off at Hado-ri Dongdong Bus Stop. Since the guide describes the walk from Hado-ri Dongdong Bus Stop to the village as approximately 30 minutes, travelers with substantial luggage or water-sports equipment may find a rental car or taxi more practical.

Bus route 201 includes Haenyeo Museum, Hado-ri Myeonsudong, Hado-ri Seomundong, Hado Elementary School, and Hado-ri Dongdong stops. Bus intervals and real-time arrival information may change, so check the day’s timetable again in the Jeju Bus Information System before departure and aim to arrive 30 minutes before the experience begins.

  • Transfer example: Bus 111 or 111-1 → Seongsan Ilchulbong Entrance → Bus 201
  • Bus stop for getting off: Hado-ri Dongdong
  • Official walking guidance after getting off: Approximately 30 minutes
  • Experience address: 1897-27 Haemajihaean-ro, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si

Pairing the visit with the Jeju Haenyeo Museum, 5 km away, clarifies the context of haenyeo culture

Hado Fishing Village Experience and Recreation Village is approximately 5 km from the Jeju Haenyeo Museum. The Jeju Haenyeo Museum was established in 2006 to preserve the value of haenyeo culture and occupies one basement level and three above-ground floors. Adding the museum before or after entering the sea makes it possible to connect the haenyeo’s work tools and history of daily life with the experience.

The village’s official list of nearby attractions includes Manjanggul Cave, Bijarim Forest, Gimnyeong Maze Park, Udo, and Seongsan Ilchulbong. Bijarim Forest is located at 55 Bijasup-gil, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si, and its contact number is 064-710-7912. Gimnyeong Maze Park is located at 122 Manjanggul-gil, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si, and its contact number is 0507-1402-9266. Rather than trying to visit everything in one day, it is easier to adapt to tide changes by combining a morning haenyeo diving experience or bareut gathering with one visit to the Jeju Haenyeo Museum.

There are also options for travelers who want to see coastal life and culture rather than underwater activities

Haenyeo diving experience is an actual water-entry program requiring a swimsuit and shower supplies. If entering the water is difficult or changing clothes is inconvenient, bareut gathering or wondam experience may be a better fit. Bareut gathering takes place in shallow water, but participants still walk over wet rocks and slippery surfaces, so aqua shoes are more suitable than sneakers.

The official experience list also includes bamboo-line fishing and snorkeling, but detailed fees, operating periods, and times currently available for confirmation have not been provided. If you want either of these activities, call the main number, 010-6396-3075, to check whether it operates that day, the minimum number of participants, what equipment is provided, and the weather-related cancellation policy before adding it to your itinerary. Foreign-language guidance and wheelchair or stroller accessibility could not be confirmed in the official materials, so ask separately when making the reservation call.

  • Water-entry activities: Haenyeo diving experience, snorkeling
  • Shallow-water and coastal activities: Bareut gathering, wondam experience
  • Items requiring advance confirmation: Time, fee, and minimum participants for bamboo-line fishing and snorkeling
  • Accessibility and foreign-language guidance: No official information confirmed; phone inquiries recommended
