Why The Hyundai Daegu Made Its Cultural Spaces Larger Than Its Stores

The Hyundai Daegu is a space that reopened after the Hyundai Department Store Daegu branch in Jung-gu, Daegu Metropolitan City, underwent approximately one year of renovation. During the renovation, the retail area for product sales was reduced by nearly 15% compared with before, while the facilities related to culture and art were expanded to a total of 5,047㎡ (approximately 1,530 pyeong).

Because of this change, the site has become an urban destination where visitors seek out exhibitions, performances, and food-and-beverage spaces on different floors, rather than simply a department store for shopping. The 1st-floor center features The Square, measuring 164㎡ (approximately 50 pyeong), while the 9th floor houses The Forum by Jaime Hayon, measuring 4,565㎡ (approximately 1,380 pyeong).

How to Enter the Above-Ground 1st Floor from Exit 18 of Banwoldang Station

For travelers visiting Daegu for the first time, the simplest option is to take Daegu Metro Line 1 or Line 2 to Banwoldang Station. Exit 18 of Banwoldang Station connects directly to the department store’s above-ground 1st-floor entrance, so there is no need to search for the entrance again from the street.

When using the bus, you can set Yakryeongsi Entrance Bus Stop as your destination. This stop is served by trunk buses 405, 504, 520, 609, and 990, as well as local branch bus Buk-gu 2. Bus Stop Line 2 Banwoldang Station 1 is served by buses 609, 990, 991, and Express 2, while the Hyundai Department Store·Dong-A Shopping Across Bus Stop is served by buses 405, 609, and 990.

Entry Is Free, but Not All Content Is Free

The Hyundai Daegu department store itself can be entered without a separate admission fee. However, separately operated content such as exhibitions, Culture Center classes, and films may have individual charges, so free access to the shopping areas should not be considered equivalent to free admission to events.

The official branch information does not list an admission ticket or department store entrance fee as a separate item. Regular closing days are presented through a monthly closure calendar, and specific dates cannot be confirmed from the published text. Therefore, after deciding on your visit date, check the closure information on the official website.

Floor-by-Floor Schedule: Closing at 20:00 Monday–Thursday and 20:30 Friday–Sunday

As confirmed on August 31, 2026, The Hyundai Daegu department store’s operating hours are 10:30–20:00 from Monday through Thursday on weekdays. From Friday through Sunday, it operates from 10:30–20:30, allowing visitors on weekend evenings to stay 30 minutes longer than on weekdays.

The restaurant area is open from 10:30–22:00. Although the restaurant area operates longer than the shopping floors after they close, individual store order cutoffs and event operating hours have not been separately provided. The main telephone number is 1588-3650, which you can call for inquiries about operations before visiting.

What You Will Actually See at The Forum, 4,565㎡ on the 9th Floor

The Forum by Jaime Hayon on the 9th floor is a multicultural arts plaza created in collaboration with world-renowned artist and industrial designer Jaime Hayon. The space consists of Cafe Walking Cup, the indoor plaza Colosseum, where performances and lectures are held, The Forum Shop, Green House, and the outdoor sculpture park Gates Garden.

Seven large sculptures, up to 9 m high, are installed in Gates Garden. The telephone number for Cafe Walking Cup on the 9th floor is 053-245-2929, and The Forum Shop can be reached at 053-245-2930. However, information on photography restrictions, English-language guidance, audio guides, and event-specific queues was not available in the published materials.
