Daegu Suseongmot: From a Reservoir in 1927 to a Lakeside Park with a 90 m Musical Fountain
Built as an agricultural reservoir in 1927, Suseongmot became one of Daegu’s signature lakeside parks after recreational-area improvements in 1983 and ecological restoration from 2010 to 2013. Visitors can enjoy a free lakeside walk, seasonal musical fountain shows, pedal boats and sightseeing cruises, as well as the Yi Sang-hwa Poetry and Literature Street and Sanghwa Garden along one convenient route.

From Mizusaki Rintaro’s reservoir in 1927 to an urban lakeside park
Suseongmot began as an agricultural reservoir built in 1927 by Mizusaki Rintaro, a Japanese pioneer farmer. It supplied water to the surrounding farmland and the terrain of Suseong-gu, which descends from the southern mountains toward the north, but after losing its agricultural-water function, it was converted into an urban neighborhood recreation area.
The park’s present-day appearance took shape in earnest in 1983, when the access road connecting to Dongdaegu-ro was expanded and nearby commercial buildings and substandard structures were renovated. From 2010 to 2013, an ecological restoration project added a waterside stage, viewing deck, and deck walkway; the concrete embankment was removed, aquatic plants were planted, and a 180-meter waterside deck was created.
Time your visit to the 90-meter, 492-nozzle multimedia music fountain by checking the May–October schedule
The multimedia music fountain in the center of Suseongmot is 90 meters long and 12 meters wide, with water jets reaching up to 70 meters high, and uses 492 nozzles. According to the official information, it operates from May to October. During the day, only the fountain runs for 40 minutes each at 13:00 and 16:00.
Night performances generally take place at 20:00 and 21:00 for 30 minutes each, changing to 20:30 and 21:30 in June and July. Since schedules may change depending on the weather, facility inspections, or events, it is safest to check the Suseong Culture and Tourism announcements on the day of your visit if the fountain is your main reason for coming.
A 10-minute walk from Line 3’s Suseongmot Station to Sanghwa Dongsan, with the information center as your starting point
By public transportation, it takes about 10 minutes on foot from Suseongmot Station on Daegu Metro Line 3 to the Suseongmot Tourist Information Center. The information center’s address is 37 Suseongmot-gil, Suseong-gu, Daegu, while the lake-center access address provided by the user is 111 Yonghak-ro, Suseong-gu, Daegu.
The Suseongmot Tourist Information Center can be reached at 053-761-0645. It operates from 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays from April to October, from 09:00 to 18:00 on weekdays from November through March of the following year, and from 09:00 to 21:00 on weekends and public holidays. It has a nursing room and spaces selling tourist souvenirs and handicrafts. For foreign visitors, this is the most practical place to ask about routes and event information.
Link together Dungji Island, the 180-meter deck, and the scenery toward Beomisan on a circuit of Suseongmot
Dungji Island in the middle of the lake was named through a public contest in 2015 and covers approximately 700 square meters. Its name conveys the meaning of a refuge for people and birds, and willow and plane trees grow on the island.
The 180-meter waterside deck created through ecological restoration is the key section of the walking route. The embankment path is covered with decomposed granite and has benches and pavilions, making it suitable both for a quick circuit and for an itinerary with breaks along the way. However, if you include the waterside deck, embankment path, and Sanghwa Dongsan, it is best to allow 1.5 to 2 hours, including time for taking photographs.
With 74 duck boats and nighttime excursion boats, check the sunset time before boarding
According to the official tourism information, Suseongmot operates 74 duck boats, 5 transparent boats (kayaks), and 2 ten-person party boats. The basic operating hours for duck boats and excursion boats are from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset, while nighttime excursion boats have operated since spring 2016.
Unlike admission to the park, the boats are separate paid facilities, so you should check the on-site fees and whether services are operating due to weather conditions. If you want to continue on to the music fountain after sunset, the last-boat window ending 30 minutes after sunset makes it better to take the boat first and then return to the lakeside in time for the fountain.
Lee Sang-hwa’s “The Stolen Fields” and memories of the Suseong fields explored at Sanghwa Dongsan
Sanghwa Dongsan and Poetry Street are connected to “Will Spring Come Even in the Stolen Fields?”, a representative work by Daegu-born poet Lee Sang-hwa (April 5, 1901–1943). Suseong Culture and Tourism explains that Suseongmot and the Suseong fields became the source of the poem’s imaginative landscape, and introduces how, at age 26 in 1926, Lee Sang-hwa sang of the colonial reality as “the stolen fields.”
Thus, this is not merely a lakeside park for viewing the night scenery; it is a place where the eras of an agricultural reservoir, colonial-period fields, and a modern urban park overlap. If you start at the tourist information center at the eastern entrance to Sanghwa Dongsan and walk in the order connecting Poetry Street with the lakeside, you can experience the literary spaces and waterside scenery together rather than separately.
From the Sangdong Dolmen Group to Arte Suseong Land: prehistoric remains and amusement facilities on the western side
The Sangdong Dolmen Group is located near the parking lot of Arte Suseong Land on the western side of Suseongmot. The site was discovered in 1990, extensively excavated in 1998, and designated Daegu Metropolitan City Monument No. 12 on April 20, 2006. The fact that prehistoric remains survive around the lake is information that is often overlooked on a walking route.
Arte Suseong Land and Park Land have children’s amusement facilities including a mini train, mini Viking ride, rabbit jumping ride, and deer train. According to the 2026 Daegu city guide, Suseong Land is closed every Monday and operates from 11:00 to 20:00; rides cost 5,000 won per ride or 13,000 won for a three-ride ticket. Travelers who only want to walk around the lake may find it more suitable to begin at the waterside deck on the opposite side, taking into account the noise and concentration of family visitors in this area.
On weekends, the maximum fee at Suseongmot Public Parking Lot is 6,000 won; public transportation is better in the evening
Suseongmot itself is a lakeside park that is open at all times, so admission is free and there are no regular closing days. However, the music fountain, boats, tourist information center, and Suseong Land each have different seasons and operating hours, so they should not be confused with the park’s opening hours.
You can use Suseongmot Public Parking Lot. According to a 2026 local-media guide for Suseong-gu, the fee is 600 won for the first 30 minutes, 300 won for each additional 10 minutes, and a daily maximum of 6,000 won; on weekends, the public parking lot is described as more convenient than the parking area inside Suseong Land. During the weekend evening music-fountain period, walking from Suseongmot Station on Line 3 is more predictable because of the possibility of waiting for a parking space.
