When Reason Sleeps, Monsters Awaken' — Goya Comes to Korea for His First Solo Exhibition

Getting there is surprisingly tricky. The nearest station is Nambu Bus Terminal Station (Seoul Arts Center) on Subway Line 3, and you can exit from Exit 5 or Exit 4. It is about a 10-minute walk, but the key issue is the uphill slope. Because it sits at the foot of Umyeonsan, the road from Exit 5 to the center is uphill. If it is hot or raining, it is much easier to take village bus No. 22 (green) from in front of Exit 5 and ride just two stops. If you are driving, parking is available, but the arts center parking lot is almost always full on weekends and public holidays, so public transportation is strongly recommended. The advantage of an art exhibition is that the language barrier is low. Because Goya's works themselves powerfully convey emotions such as light and darkness, madness and fear, you can still be overwhelmed even if you cannot read all the Korean explanations. That said, captions and background text are likely to be mainly in Korean, so it is a good idea to ask at the on-site ticket booth in advance whether an English audio guide is available. For works like 'Los Caprichos,' where satire is central, knowing the background makes the experience much deeper.

It is also helpful to know when it gets crowded. Popular exhibitions at the Seoul Arts Center tend to have long ticket lines on weekend afternoons, so going right after opening on a weekday morning or later in the afternoon is much more relaxed. Closing time is 7:00 p.m., but entry usually ends 30 to 40 minutes before closing, so if you plan to go in the evening, arrive by 6:00 p.m. at the latest.
