When I first heard about the Gangjin Haemak Festival, I was a little skeptical. Pay only a 10,000 won entrance fee, and you can drink unlimited Gangjin craft beer, Cass, imported beer, and even non-alcoholic drinks all night long. I wondered if that could really be true. But it was. The festival takes its name from the history of Dutch sailor Hendrik Hamel, who drifted ashore in Joseon and stayed in Gangjin. Building on that connection, the festival's symbol is the 'Hamelchon Beer' — a Gangjin-made beer brewed with Dutch hops and a blend of rice and oats grown in Gangjin. At the end of summer, in late August, Gangjin General Sports Field is transformed into a giant venue for beer and performances for three days.

If you think this is just a small rural festival, think again. By evening, crowds fill the grass field, holding draft beers in their hands and moving toward the stage. Singers with star power like Lee Seung-hwan, Cherry Filter, Dynamic Duo, and Kwon Eun-bi performed on the main stage every night, and between sets there were DJ EDM parties and dance team performances. By day it is a quiet small city in the south, but by night it becomes a party that can rival Waterbomb — that double life is the charm of this festival.

From arrival to heading home — a day for travelers on foot

The first thing to decide is the ticket. Admission is possible on-site, but reserved seats right in front of the main stage must be booked in advance through Ticketlink. Reserved seats are popular because they come with perks like gift certificate refunds and a dedicated beer booth. Missing out on a reservation does not mean you cannot go. On-site seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you missed the reservation, arrive early and grab a spot. Be sure to bring your ID when entering. Since beer is unlimited, adult verification is required.

Transportation is the biggest challenge for this festival. Since a KTX train does not stop in Gangjin, visitors usually take an intercity bus from Gwangju Songjeong Station or Naju to Gangjin Public Bus Terminal, then head to the festival site. From the terminal to Gangjin General Sports Field, a taxi is quick. Above all, if you drink beer, you must never drive, so the rule is to use public transportation or the festival shuttle bus. If you came by rental car, either designate one person as the driver who only drinks non-alcoholic beverages, or better yet, book lodging in Gangjin town and take a taxi round trip.

The venue runs daily from 4:00 p.m. (on opening day, it opens at 5:00 p.m. and the opening ceremony is at 7:00 p.m.) until around 9:00 to 9:30 p.m. I recommend arriving around 6:00 p.m., when the sun has started to set. That way you can avoid the daytime heat, secure a good spot, and fully enjoy the main artist performances that start around 8:00 p.m. Grab a draft beer at the beer center and buy snacks from the local food booths for the perfect 'chimaek' combination. Card payments are generally accepted at the food and merchandise booths, but since this is a rural festival, cash is still more convenient in some places, so bringing about 30,000 to 50,000 won in cash will save you from any awkward moments. After the night show ends, it can become hard to find a taxi in an instant, so it is best to plan your return transportation in advance.

Water guns, water play area, and camping zone — come prepared to get wet

This festival is not just a place to sit and drink beer. As befits a midsummer night, there is water-gun play and water cannons, and if you are near the stage, your clothes will get completely soaked. To be honest, this festival is aimed more at domestic travelers and local residents than at international tourists. It would be hard to say that English guidance or interpretation is well prepared. But the layout is simple, so the language barrier is lower than you might expect. Get your admission wristband → get beer at the beer center → buy snacks at the food booths → enjoy yourself in front of the stage — that is all you need to know. Since the beer is unlimited, you do not need to pay every time. Music and beer are universal languages, and once you are jumping around with strangers in front of the stage, language stops being an issue.

In short, it is strongly recommended for travelers in their 20s and 30s who want to enjoy K-pop performances and festival vibes at a low price, and for friends who want to experience a Korean-style summer beer party. However, transportation is inconvenient and English guidance is limited, so it is much more reassuring if you have companions moving around Gangjin or nearby together. At the end of summer, after spending the night in Gangjin amid a cool draft beer and a barrage of water guns, you will remember it for a long time and think, 'A party like this in such a small city?'
