Meeting Rembrandt and Goya on the 6th floor of Yeouido Department Store
At first, I was a bit puzzled. A museum, no, not even a museum, but to see original works by Rembrandt and Goya on the 6th floor of a department store? But once I stepped into ALT.1 at The Hyundai Seoul, all doubts vanished. The names I had only seen in textbooks were actually hanging there on real canvases, close enough to see every brushstroke.
This exhibition is a European painting show filled with original works from the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. More than 50 works by masters such as Rembrandt, Goya, El Greco, Jacques-Louis David, and Turner are displayed in a flow that traces the history of Western art from the mid-16th century to the mid-19th century. It is structured as a 300-year journey through the art history of the period, from the Renaissance to Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, and Romanticism, so even if you do not know art history well, walking through in chronological order lets you see with your own eyes how painting styles have changed over time. The run period is from March 21, 2026, to July 4, and it is especially meaningful because this is the first time the Toledo Museum of Art collection has been presented in Korea.

From booking to heading home: follow the day’s route
The first thing I want to tell you about is the ticket. Online reservations are available through Interpark (NOL Ticket), and same-day and weekend extra tickets can also be purchased at the on-site box office. But since popular time slots fill up quickly on weekends, it is more comfortable to book in advance if you are aiming for a Saturday afternoon visit. Since it is inside a department store, card payments and mobile pay are of course accepted, so there is no need to worry about places that only take cash.
I went on a weekday morning and took Line 9 express, getting off at Yeouido Station. If you enter through the direct connection passage from Yeouido Station, you can reach the department store without getting a single drop of rain on you. The exhibition hall is ALT.1 on the 6th floor, so just go up the escalator all the way. Visiting hours are 10:30~20:00 on weekdays and 10:30~20:30 on weekends, with last admission at 19:00, so even if you go in the evening, there is plenty of time. Since it is open late, you can stop by after taking care of your afternoon plans.
The exhibition is divided into six sections in total, and it took me about an hour and a half as I slowly read the explanations next to each work. If you are a foreign friend who is more comfortable with English, I recommend the docent tour. It is a separate ticketed option, lasts one hour, and gathers at the docent meeting point next to the 6th-floor box office. It runs three times on weekdays at 11:30, 14:00, and 15:30, and four times on weekends until 17:00. It starts on the hour, so if you are more than 10 minutes late, you cannot join, so be sure to keep the time. After finishing, there are many cafes and restaurants on the same floor and downstairs, making it a nice place to rest while talking about the art, and getting home is also easy because the department store is directly connected to the station, so there is almost no need to worry about missing the last train.

Things to know before you go
Just a few things to keep in mind and you will not make a wasted trip. First, weekends from 2 to 4 p.m. are the busiest. If you want to view the works calmly in front of each painting, weekday mornings or evening visits are much more comfortable. Second, the artwork explanations are primarily in Korean, so if your friend only speaks English, booking a docent tour or previewing a few key artists in advance will deepen the experience a lot. Third, some paintings, such as Goya's later works, deal with darker themes, so if you are going with young children, it is a good idea to take a quick look beforehand. On the other hand, Turner’s light and Rembrandt’s use of light and shadow are the kind of things children may also enjoy.
- Booking: Interpark online booking recommended; same-day and weekend on-site purchase available
- Visiting hours: Weekdays 10:30~20:00 / Weekends 10:30~20:30 (last admission 19:00)
- Docent tour: 1 hour, 3 times on weekdays and 4 times on weekends, gathering next to the 6th-floor box office, separate booking required
- How to get there: Direct connection from Yeouido Station on Line 9 to The Hyundai Seoul
As an indoor exhibition, it is unaffected by the weather, and because it is in a department store, the restrooms, luggage storage, and rest areas are all cleanly well-equipped. It is perfect for spending half a day avoiding rainy weather or the midsummer heat.
Who I would recommend this to
I confidently recommend it to people who love touring European museums but do not have much time, those who want to get a single overview of Western art history, and anyone looking for a worthwhile indoor course in Seoul on a rainy day. The experience of making eye contact with masters from 300 years ago in the middle of a department store stays with you longer than you might expect. Just booking one docent tour doubles that impact.
